House Deep Clean - Advice needed please

For the first time, I have arranged to have my small 1 bedroom bungalow deep cleaned on Monday as I am not able to clean it as well as I'd like myself. They said it will take 3 hours which is fine. My problem is (and I suspect many people think this way) I am feeling as if I should 'clean before the cleaner comes'. hmm

Can anyone tell me what is expected of the householder for this service - ie do I have to remove ornaments, window ledge items etc? Thanks in anticipation of responses!

Not clean but at least tidy. No point paying someone to put things away when they would only be guessing where things lived. You will get much better value for your money if the cleaner can just wizz through. Your home so your rules as to what does and doesn’t constitute a deep clean

Agree, de clutter as best you can.

Assuming it’s not a total tip yogitree 🙂 (if it was they’d have quoted longer), I’d just leave things like ornaments, they’ll move them about.
I hope you thoroughly enjoy your fresh home afterwards.

I would definitely declutter. Take things off shelves and windowsills. 3 hours doesn’t seem very long to me. Does it include moving furniture and washing down skirting boards and door frames etc ?

3 hours doesn’t seem very long to me.

Depends whether 6 people arrive, for instance.

Yes I did wonder after I’d posted that there maybe more than one person.

I used to put things away just to make it easier (and faster) for the cleaner. I didn't want to pay for them to move and dust the ornaments when they could be cleaning the bathroom floor, or polishing the cupboards. I just dusted the ornaments as I put them back.

If it's a deep clean I would definitely expect them to move everything to dust and polish, not just dust around them.

I would move things off kitchen worktops if you have anywhere to put them. Get as much as possible off the floor, even if that means putting things on sofas or beds. That way they can vacuum, wash skirting boards, clean the kitchen etc without having to move them first. I wouldn’t bother with ornaments and things that can be lifted, cleaned underneath and put back.

Are you going to be in when they come? If so, you can ask them what would help. If you’re going out, which would be my preference, you can leave a note saying what you want doing most, so you know they will prioritise that.

And yes, enjoy your sparkling house😀

Thank you all so much, lots of useful advice. I now know what I have to do. There will be 2 of them and they are doing all hoovering, mopping with disinfectant, dusting and polishing, bleaching of bathroom, kitchen cupboard doors outside, moving small appliances to clean under, fan, hob, worktops all surfaces, tables, chairs, moving of furniture, cleaning skirting boards, internal doors/door handles/switches, all inside windows and much more in-between. Thankfully, it is a small home and they will have 3 hours for 2 of them to get round it. I just need to tidy my study - everything else is reasonably organised and clear. Thanks again! thanks

Send them here when they’ve finished please yogitree 🙂

My niece just moved into a property which the agency were supposed to have had deep cleaned.

The lampshades were thick with years and years of grey dust. The patio doors were covered in mould on the inside as was the kitchen window.

I don’t call that a deep clean.
I told her to take photos and complain.

OMG! One's supposed to do that?!? 😱

UPDATE! What a wonderful job they did! Lisaangel10, patio doors and surrounds spotless! Lampshades too. Walls dusted! The kettle is now sparkling. I am delighted. Baggs, they really did - our old kitchen looks sparkly now. Thanks again everyone. If anyone's in Scotland and wants their name etc let me know. smile

Oh, that's great to hear! I never think to dust walls, but picture rails and skirtings look so much better when they are cleaned. Dado rails, too.

Enjoy swanning around your lovely clean house. It's lovely when something turns out to be as good as you'd hoped.

Cleaners never seem to do plug holes. I’ve got a thing about dirty plug holes!

lixy Mon 16-Sept-24 13:22:14

That sounds like a great job, you must be so pleased.

We are going to organise a professional deep lean for my mum’s flat once the building work is finished, so this has been a really useful, and optimistic, thread, thanks.

Are you willing to say how much this cost? Not obligatory, of course.

ExDancer Mon 16-Sept-24 13:25:43

Do you mean plug holes as in sinks and baths?

My mother-in-law's cleaner is a wizard and seems to do everything - yes even plughole. And she does the waste trap in the shower drain every 2 (I think) weeks... and does the thing on the washer drain thing that I hate doing!

Jaxjacky Mon 16-Sept-24 13:42:41

Pleased to hear that yogitree

Both. My partners house has those plugs that pull out and get covered in yucky stuff. Then a plumber changed one of them to a plug that I thought couldn’t be removed for cleaning ( it could, though, as we discovered). I don’t understand all these new fangled sink and taps and plug holes. Especially sinks that are weird shapes. I’m the most cluttered untidy person in the world but I have an obsession with some things being clean! I do actually like cleaning!

Cabbie21 Mon 16-Sept-24 13:55:07

Glad you are pleased with your clean house!

Speaking of plugholes, my bathroom basin plug keeps getting stuck, not popping up as it should, so I am left with dirty water. I have to make sure it is very loose before I push it down.

I have visitors due on Friday, so I am saving the dusting till Friday morning. That’s my excuse anyway.
