We are downsizing to a bungalow and want to put a really nice bed settee in the front reception room rather than use it as another bedroom, we have a futon bed from Dunelm that we have in a bedroom upstairs that folds into a settee but is not a proper settee that just folds out easily and it looks makeshift. Will need to be easy to pull out without pulling my back out and easy to store away again but with a comfy double mattress. The look of it should also be just like a normal settee, not too bulky.
Thanks for any help. We are prepared to pay good money for this as long as it meets the criteria.

Nice bed settee
(28 Posts)We bought a really good one from M&S some years ago but I am not sure they are doing them anymore.
DS has had 2 bed settees over the years. Both have been easy enough for me to open and close, but the mattress hasn't been very thick. That can be improved with mattress toppers etc. The biggest problem has been that the springing beneath the mattress isn't very strong. So the bed is fine for one person - I slept very comfortably on one of the bed settees - but rather less comfortable for 2, especially if one is heavier. In those circumstances, the occupants tend to roll together into the middle. I find this very uncomfortable and it puts us off staying with DS.
So... please consider who might use it, how long they might stay and whether the bed settee that you buy has stronger springing!
Thanks, yes the comfort of the bed is key, we will have family staying so a couple would need to use it, and a friend, solo, who stays every few months. Nobody stays for longer than 2/3 days. But would like it to be a nice mattress so will keep that in mind.
I don’t think I’ve ever slept on one that was actually comfy. Might just be they were cheap ones 😂
I suppose the deal could be that one of us goes on the bed settee and gives guests one of our bedrooms - we don’t sleep together, wouldn’t be a bad idea.
But still I would need the settee to look nice, not cheap/makeshift.
We bought two sofas to go in our conservatory, a three seater, and a two seater which is also a properly sprung bed settee. It seemed like a good idea at the time. It’s only been used twice. The less said about the first time the better😳😉. The second time when family descended on us from Wales and my sister in law upset the sleeping arrangements by refusing to sleep in a single bed, so DH and I ended up on the sofa bed - again! It’s comfortable but cramped so one night was enough!
I have just had a quick look at Which. They have not reviewed sofa beds but there is an article about them. Pull out sprung mattresses are usually the most comfortable and look for the thickest ones, They mentioned John Lewis, Dunelm, Cocoon as being places to look. Hope this helps.
I bought one from DFS eight years ago. Everyone who has slept on it has said how comfy it is, and I have slept on it too so yes, very comfy.
Mostly now it is used as a sofa and the cushions are etting a bit soft.
Other than that a good buy.
Thanks, yes will look at John Lewis and Dunelm, haven't ever bought from cocoon but will give it a go.
Have bought from DFS before so will look at their sofa beds as well.

|When I first moved to my flat in 2019 I I purchased a nice sofa/bed from DFS. I wanted something that had a good mattress, easy to pull out and put away and also was a full 4.6 double bed (Far too many saying they are 'doubles' are only four foot. Did use a mattress topper and everyone that used it over the few years I had it said how comfortable it was. It folded back in a sort of S movement and was easy for me. Need somewhere else to store bedding though.
My daughter did up her spare small bedroom with a sofa bed from Ikea - one of four foot type of doubles, I slept on it on several occasions and it was comfortable for one person. Advantage of this one is that it folded out sideways AND stored pillows and other bedding inside it.
You really need to take your time and actually go to the stores and try them all out
We have an Innovation Living ( they have a website) bed settee in a spare room. We got ours at John Lewis. They are a modern design, but importantly are properly sprung like a mattress, also it makes a full size double bed. Guests that have slept on it (well) are surprised when we tell them it’s a bed settee.
It’s a good idea to check the dimensions as some supposedly doubles are too short and narrow.
However, are not the cheapest.
We have had one from IKEA for a long time. It’s comfortable to sleep on and OK to get out and put away.
The only extras we’ve added over the years are a storage box for underneath, which holds a mattress topper and a new fitted cover.
I have been told that even ones that are comfortable as a bed are not great as a sofa. I want to change my ordinary daily sofa to a sofabed, but am reluctant in case this is so. Sorry to butt in to this tread, but any comments would be useful.
I’ve had one from Next which is a comfy settee but as we are a tall family I would say that one person is enough. I had the DDs single beds with pullout divans and mattresses underneath for when their friends stayed. The duvets were stored under the mattresses and so were the sheets . Pillows in the top of the wardrobe. The adds also had a rather basic settee which flipped out onto the floor ,no legs involved and that was ok for teenage sleepovers as they would have sleeping bags.
In my experience a futon is a far more comfortable mattress than any bed settee. I would keep it, and devise a bolster like set of cushions for use when it is doing duty as a sofa, and let whoever sleeps on it convert it from settee to bed if your back is not up to the job.
I am going on the assumption that the visitors will normally be younger than you.
The bugbear with a futon bed is that it has no storage space for bedcovers etc. so you will need to furnish the room with a cupboard or trunk to hold that.
A few months ago we bought a sofa bed from Sofology. It was more expensive than I’d planned to spend, but it has a really comfortable mattress as well as being easy to pull out. People who have slept on it say how comfortable it is.
The only thing I would say is to try out any sofa-bed thoroughly before you buy it. Make sure you can sit comfortably as well as sleep on it.
We had one which looked beautiful and was incredibly comfortable to sleep on. However, sitting on it for any length of time was quite impossible without putting a line of box-cushions along the back (which I made to measure from cubes of upholstery foam).
Personally, I think a sofa-bed is a wonderful combination in theory but impossible to make in reality - you have to sacrifice either one or the other because of the width issue. We might just as well have bought a single bed and dressed it with scatter cushions to look like a sofa!
I have a John Lewis Linear sofa bed, cost £650. It's called a two-seater, but can seat 3 people easily. It's really comfy as a sofa, and long enough to lie down for a nap during the day.
I have slept on it overnight a couple of times, and it's fine for a night or two, though very firm. I bought a mattress topper to soften it up enough for my old bones. It's a very easy click/clack mechanism to unfold/fold it back up. They do it in lots of nice colours. I'm really pleased with it, think it was good value.
Have a look at 'wall beds' - the only hide-able bed I've been comfortable on - and they are sort of counter weighted so not a huge task to get out and put back.
We recently moved to a bungalow too, and due to my disability and the fact that I have to spend a lot of time in bed, debated getting a sofa bed for our living room. However, it was VERY important to me that I got one with a 'proper' mattress. We went and had a look at these:
sofabedexpert.co.uk
They were very comfortable, and easy to set up. However, we haven't yet bought one, as we're in the process of doing alterations at present. In the meantime though, I've also looked at these, which look very good too:

Thanks for all info and links, really helpful.

Have a look at DFS deluxe range.
We have just bought a good one from dfs.
It has a much thicker mattress and very easy to unfold and put away . It even has storage for duvet etc.
I have one from a UK based (ad made) company called Willow and Hall. It is beautifully made and is a proper fold out bed with a very comfortable mattress
