Need Bed with Storage

I'm looking for a good bed which is sturdy and has storage under the bed for some items, ideally something like an ottoman but not drawers as they hurt my back, the husband doesn't have the ability as before to build anything so ideally prebuilt, does anyone have recommendations?

I find our Ottoman bed quite difficult to lift up and wish now we'd bought a light pine frame with separate underbed drawers on rollers.
That's also easier to clean under.
Also it was a nightmare to assemble.

I bought a truckle or trundle, I can't remember which, that fitted under a pine framed bed. It slid out quite easily and I could hook it out and push it back with my foot. The only possible drawback was that it was quite low to the ground which required bending down quite low or sitting on a the floor to put in or remove things.

My son has an ottoman bed, it came from John Lewis and was built already. I agree with what loopyloo said though, although there is a gas assisted mechanism to lift it, it’s not easy, because you are lifting the mattress up as well as the frame. You also have to take the duvet and pillows off before you can operate it. With hindsight I think drawers would be easier.

We’ve just bought a new bed with drawers underneath. Bliss, filled it up the day we got it.

Mine is the second bed I have bought over the years, and both have drawers attached. My double bed has two decent-sized drawers and two smaller drawers, which are food for underwear. They all slide easily. and the bed itself, which arrived already put together, is a breeze to move- too easy at times.

A single bed has two large drawers and is so useful.

A man designed this house with one wall-to-wall wardrobe upstairs with one shelf and fitted rail. It has 3 bedrooms.

I have a king size bed with four drawers underneath which are easy to open and shut and used mainly for linen and some Christmas decorations. The only problem is the bed is very heavy should I need to move it for hoovering.

My electric double bed has two good sized drawers. Positioned in the base so that bed-side cabinets do not 'overlap' with the drawers. They are good sized and take all bed linen, in one and my night clothes in the other.
This is now nearly 14 year old (I purchased it as a birthday pressie to myself for my 70th birthday). Had to built by company in situ. Was worried when I moved house and had pay extra to removal company for them to take apart and then put back together.
It is very heavy, no way can I move it. I hoover underneath by raising both ends as high as they go, pulling out drawers, then I can get a vacuum cleaner there.
Been looking to replace it, but cannot find any such with good drawers in them.

My daughter has an ottoman type.
It came ready built.
She only puta things in it that will not be required a lot.

Things like "winter duvets" and Christmas Decorations.
I would definitely go to try some before you buy as some are easier to lift than others.

Of course, if drawers hurt your back, so will an ottoman as they are very low too.

Can you find another way to store the things - ideally somewhere easier to get-at?

I know you have obviously thought about it but under-bed storage (I've had several sorts over the years), is only useful if you are very short of space it seems to me.

Do consider the weight of the bed when lifting if you are purchasing a new bed.
I decided to buy an ottoman bed because of the great storage you get with the style of bed, but I never thought about the weight.
Our mattress is heavy and it is impossible for me to lift.
Hubby manages but if I was on my own I would have to get rid of it.

I have an ottoman that lifts at the press of a button. No need to lift anything other than whatever you wish to remove and definitely no need to remove pillows or anything else. Mine was built in situ when it was delivered and then I was shown how to use it. It is also on castors so easy to move around. The downside was the price which I think was about 2 and a half K

hypnos hideaway, I have these beds the flaps come down to cover the space. I keep really useful boxes in there, filled with stored items. I don`t have to lift anything

mpletely understand where you’re coming from! At my age, bending down for drawers is a hassle, so an ottoman-style bed is a much better option. I recently got one from Sleep Warehouse sleepwarehouse.co.uk/products/hampshire-ottoman-storage-bed
and it’s been fantastic—sturdy, easy to lift, and with plenty of storage space underneath. Best of all, it comes prebuilt, so no need for any DIY!

If you’re looking for something durable and well-made, I’d highly recommend checking them out. They have a great selection of ottoman and divan beds with built-in storage. Hope that helps, and good luck with your search!

We have two ottoman beds. Although I can lift both the more expensive bed is much easier to lift than its budget friendly cousin. Neither need pilllows and duvet removed before lifting. Items are stored in crates or packing cubes to keep the spaces orderly. More than useful as we have little space at the side of our beds to pull out drawers. I call them my horizontal cupboards. .

The drawers with my bed open very easily. They glide. One large and one small at each side. Very good storage. I can sit on a chair to open them which is less strain on the back. I don't keep every day stuff stored there. Try a bed shop and see how easily the drawers open from a sitting position in different models.

I have an adjustable, ottoman bed. All electric, so everything is literally just pressing buttons, makes life so easy. If you Google Electric Ottoman bed there are plenty around.

Ottoman beds are hard to lift...not a good idea

keepingquiet Sat 01-Mar-25 13:53:59

I bought an antique bed that stands on four legs and has loads of room to slide things in and out easily. It cost less than most other kinds of bed. It is even on wheels so can be moved easily!

One of my DC has a king size Ottoman bed, and it concerns me that it is such a weight to be lifted by the mechanism. I may be dreaming this, but was there not a case of someone being badly injured when the mattress collapsed on them while they were removing goods from the storage? We have in our spare room a white wooden bed on legs, and some roller type storage boxes underneath - really easy to reach, or hook out with a hanger.

We have two double beds which lift up from one side, the bedding stays put and as they are on legs its easy to vaccuum underneath and means that the storage is a bit higher up than with an ordinary divan base. There is room for spare duvets, pillows, bed linen, long rolls of wrapping paper, all sorts of stuff. We got them from Dunelm, and had to put them together ourselves but it was worth it. The gas lift really helps, I only have to 'lift' about 6 inches and the gas lift does the rest.

@LovesBach
You’re correct. I think it was a woman who suffocated when the bed raised and she couldn’t do anything to prevent herself from being compressed. Nasty.
I quite like the idea of that Hypnos one now!!!!!

SuperTinny Sat 01-Mar-25 17:45:26

I have two ottoman beds, and as others have said they can need a bit of heft to open and close. But I find with two of us at it it's OK.

They are able to store so much more than divans with drawers.

Mine don't need the duvet and pillows off before operating but I would always advise to purchase the one that rises from the foot of the bed.

I say this from personal experience and an expensive mistake!
The first one we bought raised at the side. Not only does the mattress slide off without a second person to stabilise it, you can only reach around two sides because the bed is against the wall at the head and then you have the hinged side. This one has now been relegated to the spare bedroom and a new one bought that rises at the foot of the bed. I can access all three sides and the mattress stays put against the bead head!

I've had no problem with either bed raising against my will ...........

I bought a wonderful ottoman double bed from reinforced beds, handmade in the UK family run business. They make extra sturdy beds to support big girls like me plus the extra weight of my supportive mattress. I am super pleased with them and would highly recommend. www.reinforcedbeds.co.uk/
