I've got all of my childrens art work which culminated in large pieces done for A Level exams in the loft. Old hi fi systems which are now popular again. I do actually find things like that aesthetically pleasing. Only stopped using it because the cd player stopped working. Annoyingly, having been locked out of my ipad facebook page I can't upload pictures onto either facebook or marketplace as I don't know how to do it on the computer. I always rather thought that having a loft full of old things was rather glamorous [growing up we never lived in houses with lofts...thought they were just for posh people]. If I wasn't spending so much time decluttering I'd have the time to read the books I've bought but never read or watch the programmes I've recorded over the years. I was one of those people that, when video recorders were invented, recorded everything.

Well done if you can get rid of bedding.

A homeless charity near us only wants brand new stuff, nothing pre-loved as apparently it’s a health and hygiene issue.🤷‍♀️

If it’s laundered and in good condition, I cannot see the problem, if the recipients have nothing, surely that’s a better solution until they get back on their feet?

The charity is happy to accept cash instead.

No donation from me.

I am in decluttering mood again as I have given the person who wants to buy my house a deadline for an offer or I will put it on the open market.

An auctioneer who came last month still hasn't taken anything away. 😔

He told me I could pay a house clearance company who would take 4 days to clear my house and would cost a lot of money.

I can see at the rate it's going I will have to resort to this solution.

I have tackled personal papers though so am making a little progress.

I admire your cool heads M0nica and Karmalady.

I sit and gaze at photos of DH and my DC hoping they don't accidentally get thrown out either by me or by one of my willing helpers.

karmalady Mon 12-May-25 07:16:20

Grammaretto, I don`t envy you your marathon task, also you having to get a move on. Just grit your teeth and start in a corner of one room and work through. Be relentless and put feelings to one side. Marie Kondo book might help

I will be back home by 10.30 and have also got the bit in my teeth. Kitchen stuff, again, I need to make more sense of the one tall cupboard with just three shelves. My kitchen table is already full of the likes of sistema. The old way was me using pyrex jugs for custard etc in the microwave.

Top shelf is only reachable with steps, my nordic bakeware can stay there. omg, it is so tough,I want to keep my large assortment of baking dishes, bread tins etc. I am going to work on my mindset for the next couple of hours

I need to have a proper think, I need the space

karmalady Mon 12-May-25 07:25:10

Oh dear I am getting carried away again, when I should be in the shower. That deep cupboard has 4 shelves and my kitchen is even more of a tip now

After my haircut, I will come back with new eyes and carefully go through my everyday baking tins, which take up most of a whole shelf

M0nica Mon 12-May-25 07:44:48

It rather depends how much smaller your new home will be.

Thankfully, ours is only about 25% smaller, so the sorting does not have to be too rigorous, and I am by nature a none horder. kitchen equipment is the least of my problems - but books and papers........... Plus DH and his tools. Oh, and we sold our house in France last year and while most of that was disposed of in France, some stuff, mainly books, pictures and cushions are still in a storage facility near by.

karmalady Mon 12-May-25 11:03:55

I have had enough for today, what I am doing is too airy fairy to be easy as in de-cluttering for a smaller abode. I could be using everything I have but am trying to look ahead, will I need it, won`t I need it?

One dd is having a few items the other says she has no room, some now will go to recycling and some to the cs. Tbh, I have started to feel bogged down by one of my husbands small hand carved bowls. I have stopped for the day, put the bowl into a cupboard, knowing I will never use it

I cannot do any more just now, it is tough

I've been in the loft again today, I'm envious of those who can clear their loft with one trip to the tip

Me too!

I was going to say that before, but kept quiet.

It is the only part of the house that would give the hoarder proagramme a run for their money.
Even on that Stacey show, I am not sure any have been worse than mine! blush

I recently had to clear a lot of old (but not really worth anything) bulky furniture from my late mother's house. I found a site called TrashNothing.com and managed to give away most of it. I have 3 items left, and one is a massive wardrobe that was too big to take, so my brother will dismantle and dispose of it!

People were really grateful for the things, and because you can give feedback, there were fewer timewasters than Facebook.

The site works well in cities, due to population size, but it's nationwide, so worth a look. I recommended to a friend who is in the same boat, and she cleared a lot in Surrey.

The other option we had was to pay a company £2800 to clear it (they said a lot of the cost was disposal fees.)

maybee when my daughters started to clear the loft last weekend, they found lots of their ‘A’level artwork up there. Some of the really large works were in the garage, very well wrapped up and stood against the wall. When we unwrapped them they were still all in perfect condition. No one has enough room for them, so we wrapped them up again and they’re still in the garage! Both DDs are in their 40s so the art has been there a while.

I think I need to sort my ‘ memorabilia’ and files and store them in four lots. Anything which doesn’t fit can be thrown out.
One will relate to my late husband and will be for my stepchildren to have and do what they want with.
One will relate to my hobbies, holidays, school trips etc which my children will probably throw out.
One will be family related, which I hope they will want to keep and share out between them.
One will be important documents they will need.
Sounds like a plan?

valdavi Mon 12-May-25 18:29:04

I have thrown some of the A level artwork away (with permission!). There was an installation that used wooden boards & planks that's been in the loft 20 years, it just took up too much room. The folders full of paintings & sketches I have kept, for now.We do have one or two pieces round the house as well.

swampy1961 Mon 12-May-25 19:14:20

We managed two trips to the tip today. A lot of the stuff that went was pieces of wood and rubbish that had been stored in the trailer behind the gate. The trailer is now on the drive - we are hoping that someone might want it as renovation project. If not I will happily use a sledgehammer on it and have the scrap man take the metal while I will take the wood to the tip. The fish tank hasn't gone yet and also unearthed some model ships that DH was given by friend when her husband died. He just couldn't say no!! We still have a lot of rocks and stones which DH wants to use around his pond but he doesn't feel the urgency that I do to tidy up and finish off things.
I have decluttered a couple of shelves in DH's train room and now have enough books to pack up for a few quid from World of Books. DH's hobby books have gone into a cupboard that I cleared and now share space with a load of 45s records and a file!
I have a couple of bags full of ex-gifts which DD will sort through for GCs school summer fair plus some booze for the bottle stall. Anything she returns will just go to charity along with other random books that didn't make the cut with World of Books.
Found a load of wires and PC speakers/woofer box that DH wants to keep - so will box them up and lose them to the loft. Out of sight, out of mind - well mine anyway. grin
Even having done all that - I still don't feel 'decluttered' - maybe it will be better tomorrow. sad

Both of the above reported.

Do charities take good quality wooden coat hangars? I have aabout a dozen. I could use them as kindling on the wood burner, but ti is a bit late in the season for fires.

They should snatch your hand off. They are rarely donated.

What on earth were those!!!! Thanks Monica for reporting

M0nica Mon 12-May-25 21:19:02

I found it on another thread and reported that as well. It is probably on other threads I am not on.

I shant bother with the offer, 2 paracetamol serve me as well as anything else for most uses.

Calendargirl Tue 13-May-25 06:48:37

Many of us have ‘stuff’ belonging to our AC which we hang onto.

If they had to find a home for it themselves, I bet the ‘stuff’ would soon be disposed of.

Having said that, I found my DS’s birth certificate in the safe the other day. I gave him the little free one when he left home, but retained the large one that we had to pay for, as he was rather lax about paperwork.

It doesn’t take up much space! but as he’s now 48, I think it can and should be passed on to him!

grin

I thought of you all today.
We have a serious storage problem. We are going through everything to see what we can rag.
The swimwear container took a bit of a hit.
I filled a 10Kl bag and still had more to dispose of.

When I went up the tip yesterday, the (very chatty) assistant was trying to persuade me to take a discarded piece of art-glass home.
It was rather nice, but those days are gone. I wonder if his house is full of bits he's salvaged?

There is a very helpful and nice young man at my tip, he is chatty with everyone. He said that he has furnished his house with items he saved. I have actually given him a lot and glad to do so. I love that he is so kindly and treats me like a normal person, not some invisible old lady

My partner is looking after our dog for a couple of days to give me a chance to do some tidying up/decluttering. But my arthritis is bad and I’ve had terrible indigestion all day so spent most of the day in bed. Hope I’m feeling better tomorrow. I get motivational tiredness just from looking at the mess.

MayBee70 Wed 14-May-25 20:33:35

Not exactly decluttering but something that takes up time that I could use to declutter. Actually paid a window cleaner to clean my windows yesterday. I’ve never paid someone to do something that I can do myself. Unfortunately I’d hoped that he would clean to bird poo that covers my windows but on closer inspection I’ve still had to hang out of the windows and scrub it off ( I’m terrified of heights, even looking out of an open upstairs window makes me go wobbly.
