Wallboards in shower cubicles instead of tiles

Liloldlady - I was told that as long as the tiles are fine that wallboards can be stuck straight on top. Saves on mess. I'm having all my floor tiles ceiling tiles off because I will have wallboards up to half way around the bathroom and then painted above so I can change the colour if I get bored. The shower area itself will be floor to ceiling wallboards. Something like this picture but not that colour

Dm not sure what it's called but I have waterproof boards in my bathroom and love tgem

Thank you for this post, everyone. I'm planning a refit in my bathroom, and this is most helpful. I'm not keen on tiles, and hate cleaning grouting, so I'm a woman with a cunning plan, now !

I had them in my last house for 13yrs before I moved. Am now looking to replace the fully tiled bathroom in my new place with the wall boards. They are a godsend - no more yucky grout and do easy to clean. Found a very realistic marble one only yesterday which I will go with which looks far better than the photo. The plumber said they are now very popular. You won't regret it Woodenspoon.

Yes, fabulous, we removed a bath and installed a large shower in our very old (18th century) bathroom last year and were recommended shower boards by the plumber. So easy to clean, so much safer (not that I'm planning to fall) but a crack to the body from tiles is much more dangerous than from a shower board. And yes, the plumber saw to it that the walls were plastered after the removal of the tiles and no evidence at all of water getting behind.

Just had all the tiles removed from ensuite in April for refit. Wallboard fitted in shower and half height all other walls. Felt to have the whole area done would look like a public toilet. Really easy to wipe clean. I had suction holders for toilet roll and shower cabinet items. Didn't want to have holes drilled through boards. Took me 3 goes to find ones that actually stay on. Even had the floor tiles lifted and waterproof laminate installed, sonething I thought I'd never do.

We had our bath replaced with a large walk in shower with “drying space” at opposite end and chose wall boards in a colour to blend with the floor to ceiling tiles all over the rest of the bathroom. They’re great, can’t even see a join between each board and look smart.

Brilliant and easier to clean ni grout! Had mine in upstairs shower for about 8 years! No problems

We had wallboards fitted in both bathrooms this last year. Best thing in 50 years. No tiles to scrub. Bathroom much cleaner and smarter. A lot to choose from. Go for it would be my advice. Especially if getting on in years as I am! 😂

Wallboards are brilliant. I will never tile again!

I'm not a fan of tiling, and cleaning grouting.....well, don't get me started. When we had a new shower fitted we chose the wall boards, as we had seen them in a hotel and liked the easy clean finish and the uncluttered appearance. They have been great - five years and still perfect.

Have had them in the past without any problems, moved house and fancied a change so back to tiles. Would have the boards again in a heartbeat.

Wallboard much better than tiles.

Woodenspoon best thing ever. They were already in this house when we bought it 15 yrs ago and we have just updated the bathroom and included them again. The ones we removed were in perfect condition after 30 years use.

I was told that there can be problems if your walls aren’t absolutely straight, the water can get behind them.

This put me off and we had tiles when we redid our bathroom.

A reputable bathroom installer would ensure the walls were straight before putting the boards up………I know this for a fact because my bathroom has recently been refurbished.

Never heard of them or seen them.
Sound great.
Just done a recent good clean of our shower tiles, but it is a long time since we had them put in, and it shows.
Had thought we may have had to get new tiles, which I wasnt looking forward to.

Just to say, thank you all for your replies. We shall definitely be having them.

We had some in a slate look by a company called Mermaid.
They were far better than tiling.

I have those shower boards for several years now and they are as good as new and very easy to keep clean. Better than tiles.
