Wallboards in shower cubicles instead of tiles

Just that really. We are pondering the use of these to go over old dated tiles. Has anybody used them? Are they really waterproof and as maintenance free as they are advertised? Opinions for and against welcome.

Hi woodenspoon, yes we're on our second lot of shower boards, nothing wrong with the first ones, we had them over fifteen years, just changed the colour scheme. They are indeed waterproof and there is no grout to clean. I just go over them with a Vax getting out of the shower, so a lot less work

Yes, we have them and they've been great. Probably had them for at least 15 years too and not a single issue. Maintenance free, much easier to clean than tiles.

My sister has just had a new bathroom. She has them, they look fantastic.

Lovely. Thanks for the replies, it’s very helpful. We will go with it. Our fitter recommended them but it’s nice to get unbiased opinions, we are looki g at Wetwall from Wickes,

They're great woodenspoon, so easy to clean and look fabulous.

We went for a darker colour in the actual shower and a lighter colour on the walls in our ensuite.

Hope this helps.

We've since moved and are in the process of replacing this as we loved it

So pleased to read the positive feedback.
I have been contemplating the wallboards for my walk in shower.
The grouting is now a problem as I cannot keep it in top condition.
Thank you to those replying.

I moved house 2 months ago to the job already done by the previous owner. I detested my old bathroom and shower cubicle trying to keep the grout looking respectable.

I love my new bathroom and 2 months down the line I still have a little flutter of excitement when I walk into it. I shower every morning and just give the shower walls a swipe down with a squeegee each time.

They have come a long way in design. Artificial marble & stone, look the business, loads of different colours. As long as they are fitted well, they are completely waterproof.
At least you won’t have to come on here for ideas how to keep your grout clean 😂

Yes our son and daughter in law had them when they had a new bathroom, as others have said they are so much easier to care for than tiles.

They’re brilliant. So easy to keep clean. I will never go back to a tiled shower cubicle.

We were advised by our builders to put this into a new en-suite for our DD new Bed Room as teenagers just walk out and don't clean them.
Still in very good condition.

We had our bath taken out and a shower cubicle put in where the bath was. We have these shower boards in aqua colour and I am very impressed with them.

I was told that there can be problems if your walls aren’t absolutely straight, the water can get behind them.

This put me off and we had tiles when we redid our bathroom.

All your positive replies has made me think!

Nanato3 Sat 05-Jul-25 22:18:42

We had them in the whole of the bathroom in an artificial marble . Still love them .

NotTooOld Sat 05-Jul-25 22:31:36

Yep, they are very good. Ours are in artificial marble and look as good as the day they were installed, which must be at least ten years ago.

I have those shower boards for several years now and they are as good as new and very easy to keep clean. Better than tiles.

We had some in a slate look by a company called Mermaid.
They were far better than tiling.

Just to say, thank you all for your replies. We shall definitely be having them.

Never heard of them or seen them.
Sound great.
Just done a recent good clean of our shower tiles, but it is a long time since we had them put in, and it shows.
Had thought we may have had to get new tiles, which I wasnt looking forward to.

A reputable bathroom installer would ensure the walls were straight before putting the boards up………I know this for a fact because my bathroom has recently been refurbished.
