Getting things out of the shed.

The things that matter to me is to be clean myself, have clean clothes and clean bed and shower. Dusting comes very low on my agenda if at all! I have begrudgingly had to admit the things I cannot do and I have someone who comes once a week to do what every I need doing most, so they may not be the top of the list for other people but I have a list of things like the --- thing that has of course fallen down an awkward space which I darent try and reach, and when all the flipping buttons or whatever spill on the carpet. I used to struggle for ages to try and do it myself and now have more sense and just think well they will have to wait until thursday!!

Getting things out of the loft. We do not have a loft ladder as one would not fit into the space below the hatch. DH can put up extendable steps and get up there but I can't go up those. He will not put much up there - cases, Christmas decs mainly - so I have under the stairs to store things I wish to keep. The under the stairs bit is quite low so he can't get in there. It is my cubby hole to store things he would want to get rid of!

There are very clever folk around who specialise in making lofts accessible now. They have loads of different types of ladders, and can alter the hatches too. They put up shelves between the W-sections in DD's loft to make storage easier. Battery lights too, which turn on aautomatically. It has made such a difference to her house as she doesn't have much storage at all.

Trying to fold the fitted sheet. I just can’t. So I put it in a big ball and shove it in the linen drawer. Haha

Cannot clean behind the bed as fixed to headboard which cannot be moved. Try with vacuum attachments but hopeless. Moving heavy furniture out of corners. Need to push with my knees!

Allira Wed 13-Aug-25 17:52:42

A robot one or a vacuum cleaner for upstairs, one for downstairs and a handheld one for the stairs!

Lugging the vacuum all over the house. If only there was a more manouverable vacuum. No....I don't use a shark....it's a Henry because a Henry just sucks everything up but it always resists me, or topples over and I get so frustrated with it. I sometimes think I would like to design my own..........watch out Dyson - here comes the Warbler!

Had you thought of one of those robot ones maybe?

Though I have to admit I bought one myself - and then realised that, courtesy of it being just a little house = not much spare floorspace for it to manoeuvre in (not by the time I've got exactly the furniture I would get for an executive-type house (ie more and bigger rooms) and so had a change of plans on that one.

I hate changing the duvet. I think you can buy a duvet that has a pattern on it but then wouldn’t you have to put the whole thing in the wash. I change the bed over the week ,pillow cases Friday, bottom sheet Thursday. Duvet cover fortnightly . I have a list of handymen on my phone and now book them in turn for cleaning glass lamps(11) in the main room, changing light bulbs and cleaning gutters. I used to do everything and hate relying on others but I can’t cultivate a blind spot to household things like DH can. I’ve always been thrifty and find it impossible to buy anything unless it’s reduced so now I’m benefitting from my years of yellow labels .

I’m fairly fit and healthy , so housework isn’t awkward , but the chore I hate most is cleaning the oven .

Cleaning the fridge. Which reminds me, the freezer is all clarted up with ice. That's another horror chore. Wish me luck smile

I reckon that warrants my motto of "If it makes life easier to throw money at it = then throw some money at it" - ie could you afford to replace it with a frost-free one?

It's a blessing not to have to do that chore...

Mojack26 Wed 13-Aug-25 16:35:56

Another for changing the bed! On my own and changing cover and putting clean one on king size bed is a nightmare, especially when you have arthritis! I need an oxygen mask and a cuppa when done! 🤣

Nellygran Wed 13-Aug-25 16:20:53

Clearing the gutters 😭

7wistful8 Wed 13-Aug-25 16:04:41

Like many of you, I think the bed seems to present many problems, moving to see might have found its way under it, have to wait for someone to 'turn' the mattress now and then. help changing bedding, especially cover on heavy duvet, drying cumbersome bedding as no longer able to cope with rotary drying on patio, then folding it all up tidily to put in airing cupboard till next time!
Housework generally not something to look forward to - some people love it, don't they!

Romola Wed 13-Aug-25 16:02:05

Wine rack in the garage NEVER cleaned. Bottles acquire a vintage appearance although they came from Tesco a couple of months ago.

cc Wed 13-Aug-25 16:01:15

I hate changing the bed too, mainly the fitted sheet as I have a very heavy mattress in a base which has a headboard attached so I have to get help to lift it to get the top corners underneath. I'm thinking of getting some sort of divan so that I can pull it away from the wall to do it more easily. I don't like doing duvet covers but I can do it.

Cleaning the shower tray and especially the drain where my hair gets caught!!

sarahcyn Wed 13-Aug-25 15:58:21

Until yesterday I would have said “cleaning venetian blinds” - I’d almost rather buy new ones. Then I decided to clean the 36-hole wine rack we inherited from my parents. I don’t think my mother ever cleaned it. Definitely a new winner for me.

AuntieE Wed 13-Aug-25 15:20:30

None of this bothers me, except getting into the loft, but then I like housework,

Gardening is the most boring task on this earth, so I only mow the lawns. Anything else, I appeal to a neighbour and pay him.

Anything that involves standing on step - e.g. changing light bulbs. I sometimes have to go to bed in the dark for a few weeks as the ceiling light upstairs is placed where it means that I would have to lean out slightly over the stairs to do it myself, and don't trust my balance, especially as I'm on my own and no one would know if I fell!

I have most of my supermarket shopping delivered so that I an ask the driver to loosen any screw top bottles and/or deal with those infuriating squeeze and twist tops - mostly on loo cleaner and similar - as they are impossible when I have very little strength in my hand

Then stupid things like the bit of an ear ring that I dropped and it rolled under the dressing table. If I had laid on the floor and tried to get it out, I'm not sure I would be able to get up on my own. So I have to wait for someone visiting who I don't mind inviting into my bedroom, which can be a long time.

Minibookworm Wed 13-Aug-25 14:45:01

I hate cleaning the shower cubicle. We always use a window vacuum on the tiles and glass after finishing showering to get rid of excess water. However, no matter how often the cubicle is cleaned, black stubborn marks will still appear in some areas and refuse to budge. Grrrr 😡

Begrudge doing any housework, do the minimum.
I have been fortunate to have had a cleaner since my son was born, he's 37 now. My cleaner is wonderful!

knspol Wed 13-Aug-25 14:30:10

Impossible for me to move the bed to clean behind or under. Also very difficult to clean shower properly as have real trouble getting up after being down on hands and knees and nothing safe to hold on to in shower cubicle.

Lizzie44 Wed 13-Aug-25 14:15:24

I find all housework a complete pain. Husband, daughters, friends tell me to get a cleaner, but somehow I can't bring myself to do that. I'm the kind of person who would clean the house from top to bottom before the cleaner arrived.... Yes. I know, I'm my own worst enemy.
