What's the most awkward household chore for you?

Getting things out of the shed.

Basically any household chore counts as "most awkward" in my book - and yet I'd like the house immaculate.

To that end - I keep doing and redoing housework timetables - so that I do a "little something" every day - so there's never too much to do on one day. My concentration got pretty shot at the way it's taken a lot more time/effort than it should have to renovate the house in the first place (ie have it darn nearly gutted) and dealing with the troublesome neighbours I've had. But I'm working on it and hoping everything has calmed down finally (only took about 12 years to swat these things outa the way.....so I can get back on with "life as normal").

Latest revamp of housework timetable being:
Monday - kitchen
Tuesday - ironing and a machine wash
Wednesday - bathroom
Thursday - hall
Friday - study
Saturday - sitting room and a 2nd wash
Sunday - bedroom

The only things I iron anyway are clothes - and, as long as bedding/towels/teatowels are clean that's good enough.

How to get torn between everything was spotless as I grew up (Armed Forces brat and a mother who didn't go back to work until I was a teenager and then only part-time!!!) on the one hand and remembering what the houses were like of various academics that I knew when I was an adult on the other hand and thinking "there's gotta be a happy medium" between "Who wants a life anyway?" on the one end and "There's way more important/interesting things to do than housework on the other hand".

Anything that involves going up a ladder. An amazing number of household chores and maintenance seem to involve doing this.

Not just because I am vertically challenged, I also have had osteoporosis for many years and I have suffered from fractures on three separate occasions relating to this.

All of the above!

I remember being surprised at the dust behind my mother's bed when clearing her house. Now I understand that it was probably impossible for her to move it. The castors on mine are seized and I can't budge the bed.

When I had my new bed delivered not long back = I realised I couldnt get at the floor behind my bed (as it is a lot heavier than my old bed) and waited until the next time I had a man here doing something for me and had him move it forward a few inches. At least that way I can put one of those longhandled thingies used instead of feather dusters these days or lean over to remove any tissues that have fallen down the back.

Many of the things already mentioned and cleaning the window over the kitchen sink.

Errrrm....tries to think whether I ever have in current house - and I've had it over 10 years. Zero chance of me ever doing so - given I don't feel as strong as I did and the NHS here is way way worse than where I came from (ie if anything went wrong).

In the end - to make sure I can open a window in the kitchen = I swopped the back door largely for that reason (though I hated it for being "old woman style" imo). So it's now plain modern style and the panel of glass that forms the top half of it can be opened as a window - so I do have an opening window I can get at in the room.

Thanks Allira but I'm not really a cleaning skirting boards type of gal.

All of it. I do as little as possible. As for cleaning skirting boards....erm... I don't really do that.

I use one of these, no bending required
Unless you mean washing .....

Ditto, especially since I've shrunk!

All if it I hate housework such a waste of time as it all needs doing again the next day ☹️

Totally agree, would rather be gardening anyday, or reading in the winter..

Cleaning up after our two little cats. They spread their food around their plates and throw catlitter around the edge of their trays. The other day I looked under our big settee and spent 40 mins cleaning the floor. It was disgusting, I had no idea. I guess under the fridge would be an absolute nightmare, too.

Changing the bed. I am worried too about cleaning behind the bed as it has not been done since my DH went in the care home and I cannot manage it.

Hear, hear, except that “under the bed” is stuffed with stuff. I can’t remember what it is, and I don’t want to look…

I hate cleaning windows

Greyduster Mon 11-Aug-25 07:05:49

Definitely skirting boards, and cleaning the rain heads on the two showers. I have to get my son to do it when he comes to see me.

Erica23 Mon 11-Aug-25 06:55:53

Moving the beds to clean the skirting boards and cleaning the oven and fridge.

Getting up after getting down to floor level to spot clean an area.

Mt61 Sun 10-Aug-25 22:59:32

Ironing, I have stopped ironing bedding, can’t stand for long periods.

Jaxjacky Sun 10-Aug-25 21:57:38

Count me in BlueBelle too, or rather out!

Grannmarie Sun 10-Aug-25 21:35:31

Going up into the loft. I need to wait for visiting sons, then I send them up!

pably15 Sun 10-Aug-25 21:29:52

I hate changing the bed too, I have athritis in my hands, and I find the fitted sheets very awkward at the corners, and pulling furniture out, never know what's behind it
