Alternative to my Dyson

My Dyson is five years old, I have had to buy a new battery, two new heads and numerous filters and they are all expensive, I hate cleaning the thing, I thought you would just empty, but no, it has to be washed, dust gets into the crevices, two filters have to be washed and replaced, I think of my old Hoover upright with longing, I gave good old Henry, nothing cleans like he does but he's so heavy.
Any ideas please for something light, that doesnt rely on a battery and cleans carpets.

I’m on my second Dyson animal. I need lighweight because of arthritis but heavy duty because if the golden Labrador shedding and my little spaniel adds to the need for daily hoovering.
The dog forum discussion all seem to recommend either Dyson or Shark.
I’ve been less pleased with my current Dyson. Shark next time

Me too for SEBO. I had a very large house, Children, Husband, f-in-law, two German Shepherds. Carpets everywhere apart from kitchen and bathrooms.

Bought two upright SEBO's from JLP - one for upstairs and one for downstairs (got fed up with a the heaving!). Recommended by the Assistant after she'd asked for my home set up info. I respected her opinion as I knew she wasn't getting commission to push the product.

The was about 35-years ago and they're still in perfect use. We've downsized since but I still keep one upstairs and one downstairs - as the machines aged, so did I!!

It seems there's nothing like Henry.
I have read all the posts decided I won’t have another stick one the parts prices are ridiculous, Used to like my upright Hoover but will opt for the Sebo with a long flex. Thank you.

I have had a Miele for 25 years too. All it’s ever needed are new bags and paper filters.

Had two Dysons over the yearsexpensive and not reluable. Moved to a Shark liftaway. What a difference , nearly lifts the carpet up. Yes there is a filter that needs a clean but is very easy and accessible. I also have a Samsung cordless. 4 years old now and no problems. Wand detaches for handheld use, loads of accessories and two different sized roller heads. It's good but I think cordless are never as powerful as uprights.

Just remember Dyson supported Brexit. I can never buy a Dyson because of that betrayal.

Well said Gfplux.
He then moved production to the Far East IIRC. hmm

I had a Dyson years ago but couldn’t stand all the dust that flew from it when I emptied it so I did some research and bought a Sebo. I love it, it’s made for asthmatics and is allergy free because you use bags that come with little snap on lids so you are not exposed to any dust or dirt when emptying. We’ve moved to a house and I have now bought another one for my downstairs so no lugging the hoover up & down stairs. It comes with the longest lead I’ve ever had on a vacuum cleaner as well.

Gfplux - I feel the same plus other reasons for avoiding Dyson. I have had a Sebo upright with the tools attached for many years, never a problem and very good cleaning. It uses bags which I usually get off an an on-line auction site when someone is clearing them. It is quite heavy but manageable. I have kept my mother's Orek for the time when I will need one upstairs instead of carrying the Sebo up. The Orek is very light and again bagged. I have a rechargeable Bosch Athlet which is great on hard floors but no good for carpets.

I have had a Miele for 25 years, but it is now heavy, so I bought a light, upright, cheap hoover for upstairs. I have no carpets and only a few rugs, so mine will work well. Although it is difficult to find bags, Amazon helps with that.

The old Henry's were great but not so much now. We have a huge Vax wet and dry cleaner but it is heavy and cumbersome to replace Henry and a Shark upstairs. I love the Shark but it fills quickly, is not one of the lighter ones and I wouldn't recommend it for whole house cleaning. I also have a robotic hoover/mop cleaner which empties itself and works really well until the dog brings the garden into the house!!!

We replaced our Dyson with a Shark, much easier to clean and copes with dog hairs.

Love my Gtech. I have one upstairs and downstairs also a handy Gtech handheld. Had them for years and no problems.

Lallylou Sat 23-Aug-25 14:30:46

Love Miele!

Lallylou Sat 23-Aug-25 14:29:49

Just want to say, years ago I had small Dyson on wheels which clipped on to change it you had to unclip with a button. I dropped it on my foot and broke three toes. Sorry Dyson you are overpriced rubbish lallylou

I got a Gtech following rave reviews on here. Sadly the battery failed and was not covered by warranty as old stock. Cost of new battery put me off but I did love it for ease of use. I have gone back to old favourite Miele with bag. This is for upstairs and still have old faithful Nilfisk for downstairs but heavy, corded and bagged.

I have aSebo Titan cylinder with a really long cord.It is old but robust and works really well.Ihave a Shark Rocket for everyday crumb cleaning around grandchildren. It does a good job and is lightweight.Ihad Dysons in the past but think they are way overpricedd.

Foxyferret Sat 23-Aug-25 14:11:31

I have a Miele cat and dog. Excellent but heavy, picks up hair very well.

Sarah65 Sat 23-Aug-25 14:00:07

I've recently bought a Shark Classic corded vacuum cleaner which I'm very happy with so far. It is quite heavy but comes apart to hoover the stairs, high shelves etc and is very easy to empty. I decided against a cordless one as they obviously need to be charged up & I assume a new battery pack would be expensive.

VerbenaGirl Sat 23-Aug-25 13:53:59

We replaced our Dyson with a Shark Liftaway and haven't looked back.

Berd Sat 23-Aug-25 13:47:22

Love love love my GTech! If you buy the bundle you can get a hand-held with it.

Sashasmum Sat 23-Aug-25 13:44:06

I recently replaced my Henry with a Gtech as it was getting too heavy. I chose this one as I have weak hands and couldn't cope with the 'stick' cleaners with the weight is at the top. The Gtech is great. Cleans well. Yes you do occasionally have to clean the filters but not very often.

Silvertwigs Sat 23-Aug-25 13:43:03

Allsorts, try a Numatic PRH 180 lite, it’s brilliant

When I rang up to order a new battery for my Dyson and was told the cost shock, I said I wouldn't bother and would buy a different make instead. Threy sent me a free battery .

It is rather awkward to empty but I don't wash it. I use a slim screwdriver to poke the fluff and dust out.
