Can any of you GN folks advise me on getting broadband installed at the property I shall be moving to please?
If you have moved fairly recently was it up and running as soon as you arrived? I'm worried about having a gap. smile

Contact your supplier, give them the date and see what they come up with.

If they have an engineer spare it shouldn’t be a problem to arrange a time.

The earlier you contact them and give them notice the higher the chance of them being able to fit you in.

We used EE, they sent us a dongle free of charge that gave us temporary Wi-Fi.
It took only 3 days to come.

Alternatively you can ask for a “working line takeover” from the existing provider.
In our case it was Sky and they were so condescending and rude I terminated the call.
EE were superb.

Assuming you already have a broadband service, why not ask them how to proceed with your move?
If you don’t want to continue with the same provider, or it isn’t available in your new home area, contact your chosen provider when you know the completion date, and they will send the router in advance of your moving. It’s best to ask the estate agent to mention that to your vendors as a courtesy and to prevent it being refused or returned.
Once you have the keys you can plug it in and wait for it to set up. This can take several minutes or up to 24 hours.

Our cabling was installed before we moved in, facilitated via the estate agent with the vendor.

The broadband wasn't switched on for a couple of days but we had bought extra data from our mobile company and used phone hotspots. This worked so well that we now have 5g (unwired) broadband.
Of course, this relies on you having a good 5g/4g signal.

It all depends. Vodafone arrived the day after we completed our house purchase last week. They were delighted that there was clearly a duct from the house to the nearest junction box, with the copper wire in so that all they had to do was tie the fibre cable to the copper cable and pull it through.

Thats when the problem started. They joined the cables but couldn't pull it through. It seems that somewhere under the pavement between us and the junction box, the cable ducts have gor crushed and corroded.

Solution? An upto 6 week wait for a construction crew to come and dig up the pavement, replace the damaged legth of duct and finslly pull the cable through.

In the meanwhile we already had an EE dongle and we are running off that.

Good luck Aldom!

Depending on your phone contract it might be convenient to use your phone as a hotspot until you get broadband. We did this when we were between suppliers and things went wrong, meaning we were without broadband for a couple of weeks.

The downsides are that if the person whose phone is being used takes it out of the house the signal goes with them, and the other person has to connect their phone (just a 2 minute job though), that you really need an 'unlimited data' contract or you will run up huge bills, and if you want to play games online the speed may not be enough. Otherwise it is a good solution, as the mini hub we were sent didn't have enough power to reach all of the house, and people usually have their phone in the room with them.

Thank you all for responding so quickly. From what you have told me I think transferring with my current supplier is best for me. I'll get in touch with them as soon as I have a completion date.
Sorry to hear of your added complication Monica. I hope otherwise you're still happy with the house. I thought of you yesterday as I was at the market. smile
Thanks again everyone. smile

My son moved into his house earlier this year, he phoned Plusnet once he had the keys and they came a couple of days later (before he was living in there) and connected his broadband. Up and running in no time.
Like us he doesn't have a home phone.

It's fourteen years since I last moved. In spite of giving my provider plenty of notice it still took three weeks for them to install broadband.
From what you all say, I think things have greatly improved in fourteen years. You've put my mind at rest. There's enough stress attached to moving without worrying about broadband.

I have just moved and kept the same supplier but had to wait 10 days for the fibre connection to be installed as there was no broadband previously

If the property already has broadband you need to check that the sellers just cancel their contract and don't ask for the broadband to be disconnected. That's what our sellers did and we had to wait 2 weeks to get it installed again. On top of that our mobile phones had no signal in the house apart from by a window halfway up the stairs where we got a faint signal if we were lucky, so we couldn't even use our mobiles to connect! Good luck with the move

Just check your coverage area both with OfCom and your supplier as their answers may well differ

I just moved BT with me. Carrying on the original contract. It was up and running for me moving in.

Aldom Sun 31-Aug-25 16:16:08

Thank you everyone.

That's reassuring Annewilco I intend to transfer my current contract. It should be fine as I had the same suppier when I lived in the same area fourteen years ago.

We moved house 2 years ago, BT supplied us with a mobile device which gave us an internet connection until they came to wire us up 10 days later.

Northowramgran thank you. I'll bear that in mind.

Your username makes me think you are from a village near Halifax?
That's where my late husband came from. His cousin still lives in the area. smile
