Do any of you bother with pedestal mats in the bathroom?

I have always had a matching bathmat and pedestal mat, but lots of shops now only sell bath mats.

Why have pedestal mats fallen out of fashion? What are they even specifically for?

For those who don’t like toilet brushes, tell me , how do you clean the bowl ?

This is getting pretty basic, but a good strong pair of long armed rubber gloves and bathroom spray with bleach.

Pedestal mats and toilet brushes are a big no no in our house . Both unhygienic- especially the toilet brush !!!
Cleaning the toilet is easy if done regularly, just grab those rubber gloves that are kept for that job !

They are to soak up urine spills from men who don't bother to aim when peeing, and piss all over the lav, seat, floor etc.

Civilised men teach their sons to aim straight, put the seat and lid back down, flush, and wash their hands.

oh , that's a good one....made me laugh...but I think you're right

I used to work in a hospital as a cleaner...there never was a toilet brush...we had to have rubber gloves a course green pad and scrubbed the toilet .

I don’t have one in the bathrooms upstairs but I do have one in the downstairs toilet, which is washed and changed regularly. For various reasons, this toilet is used by many people as we host a church house group as well as having visitors at different times. About eighteen months ago, l noticed a strong smell of urine around the base of the toilet and realised that some male users were not always directing all their flow into the bowl. This was the point at which I realised that I needed a solution to the problem and bought a couple of pedestal mats. Thankfully, this seems to have worked and, if l notice an odour, it is much easier to wash the mat and it protects the laminate floor.

and one ward I worked in ,,there were always dribbles in the staff toilet, and I was told it was a surgeon who was responsible
made me wonder what chance his patients had...if he couldn't aim right

I absolutely hate a toilet brush. OH buys them and I ignore them. Filthy things.

I do actually keep a small neat one - purely for guests, then if used it gets dunked in bleach solution.

You don’t have to like them to use them!

I hate pedestal mats .
I think that men need urinals or their own bathroom .
I keep my loo brush in bleach so it's always clean .

Now that I live alone I can indulge my like of thick, fluffy mats and towels. I don't have men to mess everything up.

Carpet in the bathroom 😱

I just pull the bathmat across for me, then put it back by the shower (we don’t have a bath).

Two of my neighbours have carpets in their recently refurbished bathrooms! I have to confess feeling rather astonished.😲

Mollygo Mon 08-Dec-25 08:07:52

We used to have pedestal mats. Tiled floors are so cold at night. Since the dog kept stealing them I gave up.

Visgir1 Mon 08-Dec-25 08:57:25

I have never used them, I have large bathroom mats that cover those area. My downstairs loo has Amtico flooring plus my loo has a square base, I bought a select of square shower mat in bright colours, so not cold underfoot and my 4 year old grandson and 70 Yr old DH have areas covered.

Exactly this! 😱

As one who is married to a "splasher" I find the pedestal mat a necessary addition. I got my matching set from Cotton Traders.

labazs Mon 08-Dec-25 13:42:48

if i lived alone yes but as I have a man with me nope not a chance. they used to be sold in threes the bath mat pedestal mat and a toilet seat cover. now does anyone use toilet seat covers any more

Grantanow Mon 08-Dec-25 13:44:11

No pedestal mat but a warm mat at the front to put ones feet on.

I think of them as being unsanitary. I want to see any drips so I can wipe them up.

As it is, it is not a problem I have.

Can I suggest a correction?
“I want to see any drips so I can tell whoever made them to clear them up”

I have been know to send my grandsons back to flush/ wipe up any drips. My husband sits to pee- as he says: why should you have to clear up other dirty people’s body fluids?

Invalids /the very elderly excepted, no one should leave toilet mess for someone else to deal with.

MickyD Mon 08-Dec-25 13:49:33

Yes we have them. DH has ‘post wee leakage’. I stick them in the machine once or twice a week.
I do find them hard to come by as OP says, it’s mostly bath/shower mats being sold now without the pedestal mat.

pen50 Mon 08-Dec-25 13:56:26

Apparently in Germany men are positively encouraged to sit when peeing.

Bazza Mon 08-Dec-25 14:10:13

Well pen50 I almost wish I lived in Germany! Why why why do most men insist on peeing standing up? Even the good aimers will surely make splashes? My DD says that it’s quicker not to have to take down trousers and pants, but although I point out that most women wear trousers and it takes seconds it makes no difference. It’s a real bugbear of mine, especially as it is inevitably is the lady of the house who has to clean up. And no, I wouldn’t ever have a pedestal mat, just wish I had a DD and grandsons who can take the trouble to sit while peeing so they know exactly where the steam goes, just like a women!

Madmeg Mon 08-Dec-25 14:12:11

We have carpet in both bathroom and downstairs loo as DH has always insisted on it. I use toilet mats and wash often but DH shuffles his feet and they move away so the carpet is stained and NOTHING will shift it. Now he isn't able to bend to wipe it up - and doesn't really care!

Nannan2 Mon 08-Dec-25 14:13:31

Retread- thats what i do.😅

Madmeg Mon 08-Dec-25 14:14:45

Oh, and he won't sit on the loo cos he says he says he keeps forgetting. This has been the case for at least 10 years and now he isn't able to down and up from the seat!
