New Bed Required.

Our bed is 20 years old.

It’s a metal one, I loved it as soon as I saw it in the department store.

Sadly, it now needs to be replaced. It has a slatted base and the plastic bits that support the slats have gone brittle with age and the slats are giving way.

Went to look at beds today. Oh dear, confused by so much choice.

Really don’t want a divan, they look so big and bulky after our airy metal one.

Are divans what people our age have now?

The metal ones looked cheap and flimsy, quite liked some wooden ones with sturdy looking slats.

And they looked so much easier to vacuum under, all nice and open.

But are the divans more comfortable!?

N.B. We intend to buy a good mattress to go on top.

I think divans are unhygienic and poorly made although they often provide valuable storage space. If you can't get yours repaired get one with wooden slats and airy space underneath it. My deceased partner made ours and he said it was so easy to do. If you have a handy man to hand ask him to make one for you.

Never had anything other than a divan and wouldn't want anything. So comfy with storage underneath.

I read somewhere years ago that mattresses last much longer on a divan base . Something to do with the support it gets .

Loaf do some lovely beds. Also, take a look at Ikea. But as others have said, if you still like your bed, just replace the bits that need fixing.

I much prefer my bed with space underneath over the old divan. The drawers only hold so much but I have lots of room to store things under the bed.
I think that's really personal choice and how much space you have for storage, I have very little so the space under the bed is very useful.

But the bed is the least important thing, it's a good mattress you need. A good mattress will be fine even on the worst beds, personally I'd buy a basic bed and spend as much as I could afford on a good mattress.

Our current bed is a wooden slatted one, & we're really pleased with it; got it from Get Laid Beds, lots of choice in wood colour, size, style of legs etc.

We have recently bought a Hypnos mattress ( Premier Inn use these ) and a topper , put onto a slatted base . It is the BEST , I have slept sooooo well on it . We used to have a memory foam and hated it !!!!!

I have a king-size divan with four storage drawers underneath; much less messy than baskets.

I have a beautiful satin pine bed frame (with two matching chests of drawers) which was bought by my older friend’s parents in about 1940 from the Co-Op.
It came to me about 25 years ago with a horse hair mattress … I’m now on my second replacement mattress and wouldn’t change it for the world..

I love my divan bed, has 4 drawers for storage as ive downsized to small apartment. Didn't pay alot just £400 with a plush headboard .
The mattress i already had and is so comfortable , it was my late mum's.

Just realised I should have put our mattress is a Tempur one, not Tempa!

Sealy posturepedic for us to avoid back problems. I have a Dunlopillo pillow, cost about £50. It’s behind my back as I type now. It’s very firm so not for everyone. When I sleep I will cover it with a Premier inn Hypnos pillow. Perfect night’s sleep but many people prefer softer bedding.

Re: mattresses, make sure they aren’t too heavy. I changed the sheets on my DD’s new guest bed last week and almost gave up.

I agree pennyg Get Laid Beds get my vote too. With an expensive mattress. I already had a much adored bedhead so I got their floating platform, sort of Japanese style. I got a bed leg length so that when the mattress was added the bed was perfect size to sit on, with feet on floor. Because my bedroom is tiny! No space for chair. Being able to see floor under the bed gives the illusion of a larger room. I still have storage boxes underneath, plastic ones with lids that seal when wanted. I hate divan beds where the design is cheepo so that an edge sticks up an inch from the base up the sides of the mattress … designed to knacker knuckles when bed making!

I never like the fabric on divans. And some divan bases are just fabric covered wooden boxes - no better than a slatted bedframe in terms of the support for the mattress. There are sprung divan bases, but you really have to step up a level price wise for these.

All of ours are slatted beds (wooden frames in spare rooms, metal frame/wooden slats in ours) and visitors always comment on how comfortable they find our beds. We don’t buy the most expensive mattresses, but we do buy good ones and change them when necessary.

I used to sleep on an antique bed frame, which was well over 100 years old. Absolutely rock solid. (And much more comfortable once we replaced the flock and horsehair mattress 😂)

I love divans! I’d be hard pressed to have anything else.

I managed to repair the slats under the mattress.

Calendargirl Sun 08-Feb-26 07:46:30

Thanks for all responses, just an update.

I told DH that GN readers had mentioned replacement slats.

He said there was nothing wrong with the slats, it was the plastic holders that were wearing out.

I checked out various sites, and after taking measurements etc, sent off for a full set of replacement holders for the slats.

They came less than 24 hours after ordering them!

It will take a bit of time to change them all, but hopeful that when it’s done, we shall buy a lovely new mattress to put on the bed that I really didn’t want to replace.

I would advise very stongly against ant bed that has to be folded away!

Do you really want the hassle of folding it away in the morning, after the room has been aired, and getting it down again in the evening every single day?

And the same applies to a divan.

Both are fine in a guest bedroom, especially if it doubles as your office, sewing-room or whatever, but honestly when you are feeling wretched with a migraine or the flu you do not want to be fiddling around with your bed. You just want to lie down quickly.

I've read not that long back of a very nasty accident with an ottoman bed heading in the direction of the wall unexpectedly - cue one dead owner. I don't think that's the only time that has happened with that type of bed = no thanks!

I,m looking for a new bed as when we bought the double my late husband choose a firm mattress for the divan bed but it was to firm for me always had aches and pains in the morning,my youngest son said why not replace the mattress but as i said it felt weird sleeping in the bed i shared with my husband now he was gone.I looked at slatted bed frames always had divans before i decided to go for a divan again ordered one small double they turned up with a double and moaned that as there are rails either side of the stairs thay wouldnt be able to get a divan up there and said needed a flat pack bed,yet when we moved in the double divan we had was gotten up the stairs no problems. So as it was wrong size and they wouldnt have taken it upstairs anyway returned it.Now looking at bedframes but as they require assembly and i,m on my own not sure i,d be able to assemble one the slatted ones do seem to come in more attractive styles the upholstered ones i,m looking at do anyway but now wondering if as far as assembling goes if should go for a divan and just go elsewhere to order it as they delivery drivers possibly just didnt want to carry it upstairs, also not sure about slatted as maybe not as strong nor as comfortable
