Duvets

My feather and down duvet is very old and getting a bit flat. I’ve been thinking about a wool duvet for a while but I don’t know anyone who has one and can tell me if they’re great or not! I found a post on here from 2021 which mentions them but nothing more recent.
I’m looking at the wool duvet on Groupon and need super king. Someone said they’re very heavy especially for changing covers.
Does anyone have any advice on wool duvets?

We’ve had a superking wool duvet for years.
I thought I had made a big mistake at first as it smelt! Of wool!
I hung it on the line for a couple of days and was assured by the seller that the smell wears off. It does,
I only change the cover twice a year and use a top sheet. Seems to work.

I’ve ordered a wool duvet. Just hope I get in with it!
It’s interesting to see how many people use coverless duvets. Aren’t they microfibres? I find any polyester or synthetic fabric really uncomfortable and sweaty. Wool is naturally anti microbial and doesn’t need much cleaning. It will of course have a cover. We shall see in due course how we get on!

Glad you made a decision. Come back and give us a review when you have got settled 😊

I have also changed to coverless. My old one was 15 tog and with a hwb I didn't suffer from hypothermia. The coverless was very cheap, very well made and to save washing I place a sheet between me and the duvet. Being a cold bird I have a cosy blanket on top.

For some strange reason pillowcases didn't for this type and can't be bought separately.

It is like the old eiderdown but flatter. Mine cost £28 from Amazon!

Our duvets and pillows are from Woolroom.
We have the two-layer all-seasons duvets, and the pillows with a zip side so you can adjust and fluff up the filling.
They're not cheap but they last for years. There are often good discount codes, especially round Bank Holidays.
We have a single duvet each so we can each have our preferred weight, this makes it easier to change the covers too.
I've put a plain white brushed cotton duvet cover on each as a protector, then a patterned cotton cover on top which is the one I change regularly.

They go in the washer.

How do you clean them?

I don’t think dry cleaners are allowed to clean bedding now.
In fact, saying that, all our dry cleaners have gone in our town.
What about cleaning with a hand held steamer?

Coverless here too - I’ve put a new 10.5 over my 7.5. I don’t think it equates to 18tog, as I’d be roasting (!) but it’s a nice weight and cozy.

Blooming heck! Is not like sleeping under a tonne of rubble? 😂

We do. We will buy a larger capacity one when this noe gives up the ghost.

You wash them.. in the washing machine. They dry really quickly.

Can you wash a kingsize coverless duvet in a domestic WM?

I love my coverless duvet. It's so light yet very cosy. It looks lovely on the bed too and washes well and easily.

Exactly this

Also, (crazyH) I use a sheet between me and the coverless duvet, so it really doesn’t get ‘dirty’ and as kitty says they’re so easy to wash and dry.
I do, however, realise they aren’t for everyone.

I don’t understand these coverless duvets.
How do you keep them clean?

butterandjam Tue 03-Nov-26 11:14:36

We have one ( Bargain impulse buy in Sydney airport **; some promotion for Australian wool farmers and perhaps that's the climate it was made for?).

It's thinner but much heavier than our light as air John Lewis synthetic, and not as warm. I only use the wool one when I want a cooler one in summer.

Consider cleaning.

My wool one label says not washable, but I'd never chemical- dry-clean bedding so, it's never been cleaned either. I might just give it a sacrificial live or die laundering at the laundry I send the synthetic one to.

Scroll down if you want to know
what kind of slut I am how long a pure wool duvet lasts without washing and still doesn't stink

** bought in 1990. Yes of course its used inside a cover.

I have swapped to coverless duvets, I found changing the covers on a king-size duvet too much for my hands, so have changed the small double and 2 singles too, on my dh I throw a blanket over if he feels cold.so easy to manage.

I bought coverless duvets and returned them both. The seams went on them after a week or so. They were not cheap and a supposedly good brand for all kinds of bedding. I will look into a wool duvet its more sustainable so I would expect it to be expensive.

We also just swapped to coverless duvets and are very pleased with them.

Basgetti Tue 03-Nov-26 09:10:15

I have bought coverless duvets for every bed. Very happy with them. No more fighting the duvets on 3 beds each time the family visits.

I love my wool duvet.
Agree with Yorklady

We have a winter/heavy wool duvet. Think it equates to a 10 tog.
Honestly it’s the best duvet I have ever owned but it was expensive..
Very warm at the moment but the strangest thing is that we had it on at times in the summer and it was never too warm.
It is heavier than a feather duvet and I can’t manage to change to duvet cover on my own.
Had a feather and down previously but much prefer the wool.
