As people who are receiving higher occupational pensions have often paid a lot of income tax during their working lives should they put a limit of £4,000 a year on the amount of income tax to be paid by any one pensioner per year.

For heavens sake!angry

gillybob Tue 12-Mar-13 22:20:26

NO

HUNTERF Tue 12-Mar-13 22:27:43

O'h you think the limit should be £3,000 or less than that.

Frank

Ana Tue 12-Mar-13 22:29:37

Ooh! Was that a joke, Frank? grin

gillybob Tue 12-Mar-13 22:30:14

No I think the income should be treat like any income with exactly the same tax free allowances and the same rates of tax. smile

gracesmum Tue 12-Mar-13 22:30:54

I think that if they have loads of money they should pay their fair whack - why should pensioners with lower incomes subsidise those with fat cat pensions or gold-plated annuities?

gillybob Tue 12-Mar-13 22:30:58

Hmmm I think I fell for it too ! [banging head off wall emoticon]

If you receive the money you pay the tax - pensionor not - pension contributions are not taxed when paid in therefore you pay tax when pension received. Anyone paying that much tax are on a good pension and can afford it.

ABBA Money money money!

HUNTERF Tue 12-Mar-13 22:34:04

Hi Ana

It was not a joke Ana
People who paid higher rate tax during their working lives deserve to be thanked for their contribution to society by having a limit placed on the amount of tax they have to pay in old age.

FRANK GIVE IT A REST.FIND SOMETHING ELSE TO TALK ABOUT!

HUNTERF Tue 12-Mar-13 22:37:38

Hi Gracesmum

Why should people pay a higher amount just because they have a higher income?.

Frank

gillybob Tue 12-Mar-13 22:38:28

No they do not deserve to be thanked Frank . They paid tax on the earnings they had at the time and they should pay tax on the earnings they have now its simple really, or else we would all be "thanking" anyone who paid more tax than ourselves . Apart from that do you ever spare a thought for those on low incomes who pay tax?

gracesmum Tue 12-Mar-13 22:39:03

People who paid higher rate tax during their working life did so because they had higher incomes Simples.
Now if somebody said pensioners should have increased allowances because they are at home, feel the cold more easily and need to heat their homes.....I'd support that.

gillybob Tue 12-Mar-13 22:39:44

It's been cold here in the NE today. Mind you we probably pay a bit less tax overall so what do you expect?

HUNTERF Tue 12-Mar-13 22:40:44

Hi gillybob

People on low incomes do not pay as much tax as people on high incomes.

gracesmum Tue 12-Mar-13 22:42:41

Gosh does the government control the weather too? grin What have they got against us in the Midlands? Of course....that's why it isn't as cold in London where all the psoh people livegrin

Bez Tue 12-Mar-13 22:44:52

I think the people paying all the tax should thank the education system they went through for allowing them to gain the knowledge they needed to earn the money to pay the tax.

gillybob Tue 12-Mar-13 22:46:00

Oh Frank what are you trying to prove? Are you suggesting that someone earning £15,000 per year should pay the same income tax as someone earning £150,000 per year or £ 1.5 million???

confused

Ana Tue 12-Mar-13 22:46:11

Frank, I was asking whether your second post was a joke@

"O'h you think the limit should be £3,000 or less than that."

Obviously not....hmm

HUNTERF Tue 12-Mar-13 22:46:29

Hi gracesmum

I moved from London to the Midlands when I retired to re join my family. Shops etc in the Midlands do seem to want my London pension money.
Think. I am helping the Midlands economy.

Frank

Galen Tue 12-Mar-13 22:48:21

I don't call MK the midlands! They stop at about the Warwickshire border! You're soft south GMsunshine (I wish) hmm

Ana Tue 12-Mar-13 22:48:58

Frank, you ask "Why should people pay a higher amount just because they have a higher income?."

Because that's the way income tax works. Surely you knew that?

gillybob Tue 12-Mar-13 22:49:47

Frank I distinctly remember seeing a sign in a shop (I think it was in Birmingham) saying Go home Frank and take your pension with you
