Just had a phone call from a lady in her late 30's.
Her mother has passed away and her father passed away some years ago.
There is a will.
The problem is she does not know where the money is but she knows the house is owned by her mother.
The only help I can think of giving her is to offer to help to search the house for evidence of money. I will not feel comfortable looking through other people's cupboards but I will do it if she wants me to.
Anybody got any other suggestions.
When my father passed away I had his money recorded on a spread sheet and I knew exactly where it was. I just think there is a chance a Gransnetter has been in this situation.

You are so right Hunter , it is better a relative is involved rather than an outsider.

It could lead to soo many questions about whether things had been done correctly .

You have have enough on your plate what with one thing and another , tyo have nosy relatives putting their fourpenneth in.

Soooo glad that the "small amount of constructive advice" has been of some use, Frank I can rest easy in my bed tonight now.

Just to let everybody know a relative of the lady has volunteered to help with the search of the house.
I have passed on the small amount of constructive advice I have got off this thread.
As far as I am concerned it is better a relative is involved rather than an outsider.

Some people say 'passed over', as in (presumably) 'passed over to the other side'. It always sounds to me as though the person was thrown over a hedge to be collected...

My lovely mum always used to say I would be late for my own funeral,as it always took me ages to get ready to go anywhere,I had to make sure my make-up and hair was just right and everything in order before I left the house,I'm still the same now nothing changed in 60+ yrs.

Elegran Fri 22-Mar-13 21:15:18

I'm sure I read passed there too. Maybe I was wrong (it has been known)

Enviousamerican Fri 22-Mar-13 21:09:52

You can count on me to be late for death.

gracesmum Fri 22-Mar-13 20:24:35

I thought the expression on the Alex McCall Smith books was late as in "My mother is now late"

Death is harsh.

absent Fri 22-Mar-13 20:15:21

Passed where?

Nonu Fri 22-Mar-13 19:44:56

Ilike the expression "passed" sounds less harsh than "died"

It is painful enough when someone near goes , nice to soften things , IMO

When my father died in 1979 the funeral organiser people asked if we wanted an announcement in the newspapers. We did, but they suggested "passed away", whereupon I insisted it should simply say died.

Ana Fri 22-Mar-13 19:29:07

I suppose it should be 'past' really...
So-and-so is now past. confused

Elegran Fri 22-Mar-13 19:26:30

Passed is pretty new. I first heard read it in Alexander McColl Smith's books.
I thought it was a Botwana-ism.

annodomini Fri 22-Mar-13 19:17:03

In recent years, 'passed away' has become simply 'passed'. I am with you, Phoenix.

Yes,I'm in Nashville,Tn. I've lived hear most of my life.Always have been interested in your country and visited London on a tour at age 19 in 1971 .I felt like I'd been there before! felt comfortable.Alas I'll probably never get to visit again (bad back) and no I do not like country music and we don't go around wearing cowboy boots and hats! Celebrities do though. It a very pretty state and we get all four seasons.Enjoy watching your older tv shows on Netflix and I find it easy to understand the meaning of your saying.

Nonu Fri 22-Mar-13 18:54:12

Hi Envious , are living in the STates ,? if so what part ? if I may ask ?

Anne58 Fri 22-Mar-13 18:53:19

I still find that the phrase "passed away" makes me think of people just getting fainter and fainter until..... poof! They disappear.

Enviousamerican Fri 22-Mar-13 18:50:31

Passed away is just a way to make it sound nicer, less harsh? Like assed away.

Anne58 Fri 22-Mar-13 18:49:51

What Frank you mean she hasn't "passed away" but has actually died, ceased to exist, is no more, has shuffled off this mortal coil, gone to a better place.........

HUNTERF Fri 22-Mar-13 17:46:00

It looks as if phoenix has heard what has happened to the woman who has been annoying me for the last year.
