Yes, exactly. I wonder who would keep an eye on the fund too. I Have come to the conclusion it's a good idea as a one off amount, but don't think I would want to keep adding to it to build up a high amount. Too risky.

Nice to think they would be reminded of their own granny and grandad when they are of an age to be grandparents themselves.

Jingl thank you for this suggestion which I'll look into. I'd like to find out whether putting a lump sum of a few thousand now would be of more value long-term than leaving them the same amount in my will. Given what's happened to pension funds over the last few years their funds may be worthless in 50 years or might guarantee them a contented retirement. Oh for a crystal ball!

I think if you have to offload extra cash it's probably a good idea to skip a generation.
Just as long as you don't alienate your kids in the process!
