So sick of the rat race, getting older and want to be my own boss and work from home.

Does anyone have any suggestions about work that I can do from home

Thank you

DD2 worked for one of the area 'life' magazines as a reporter on an ad hoc basis. She visited places of interest, hotels, spas and interviewing managers, owners etc and wrote articles for the magazine about her experience accompanied by photos.

Enjoyable experiences and well paid - however it was not full-time and she had another job as well.

I am not really exceptional good at anything really, I am quite creative and like making things, I like cooking. I am quite a caring person and like to make a difference..Thank you

Do you like baking? Baking cakes, pies etc for local tea rooms, garden centres etc who like to serve 'home-made'. Do they all make them themselves?

I really do need to find another way to make a living, I currently work in a competetive world and am looking to wind things down a notchsmile

It sounds to me as though you are better sticking to the job you are already doing, Paula whatever it is. Starting up a business from scratch does need you to be good at whatever you choose, there are so many other people to compete with, and the jobs that are advertised as being for people to do at home are usually just rip-offs.

I have just thought of Betterwear and Kleeneze. Our Betterware catalogue is put through the door by a young man who I am pretty sure is autistic - if you meet him on the foorstep or in the street and say hello he looks at you as though you come from Mars. He is his own boss, and does not have to worry about the social interfacing that being employed would entail. He has been doing it for years, and seems to have built up a business of his own.

Yes Elegran I think it is possible to earn a living with Betterwear if you put loads of effort but I am looking to wind things down a little.

Thank you for your postsmile

In what area of this "competitive world" do you work? (This is getting like What's My Line? for those of you old enough to remember it!) Not being nosy per se, but looking for clues regarding your skill base. Sadly there are so many people with a passion which they can exploit in their work, if you do not have a sense of direction you could find it difficult. If you genuinely enjoy caring, how about becoming what used to be called a home help going into people's houses to help with personal and light domestic care? Or if you are a gifted baker do you have the funds to set up a tearoom/cake shop?

Soutra Tue 01-Jul-14 22:21:17

Avon?

Elegran Tue 01-Jul-14 22:22:42

Anything that you start as a home business is going to need a great deal of effort put into it before it makes any money.

You are very coy about what you do now.

Dragonfly1 Tue 01-Jul-14 22:25:42

Do you drive/have a car? Could you become a courier for Hermes delivery firm?

Dragonfly1 Tue 01-Jul-14 22:28:45

Soutra I remember What's My Line - Gilbert Harding, wasn't it? Blimey, blast from the past!

merlotgran Tue 01-Jul-14 22:29:44

Anyone who thinks they can wind things down a little by working from home is barking up the wrong tree.

Paula8 Tue 01-Jul-14 22:34:40

what do you do for a living elegran or are you now retired, sorry if my question sounds intrusive--smile

Paula8 Tue 01-Jul-14 22:36:58

Paula8 Tue 01-Jul-14 22:41:41

Dear soutra when I look at all my posts, I have noticed that you kind of comment on any post that I post and just wanted to say thank yousmile

Soutra Tue 01-Jul-14 22:53:43

My comments are always kind wink

rosequartz Tue 01-Jul-14 22:55:43

And me and me and me

(Goes off in a huff as well)

My friend used to say that you should 'build on your strengths' so you could write a list of what you are good at, what you like doing, what are your personality traits etc. and another column of what you don't like doing, are not so good at or are unable to do physically, and go from there.

rosequartz Tue 01-Jul-14 22:58:49

Ps re the mice, not so silly, although there is more of a call for rat catchers these days.

Soutra Tue 01-Jul-14 23:02:36

Room in my huffing corner for a little one rosequartz grin

rosequartz Tue 01-Jul-14 23:08:15

Thank you soutra grin and I lost half a pound this week.

Only trying to be helpful. sad
Hope you find some inspiration, Paula.

Anne58 Tue 01-Jul-14 23:13:33

FFS! Will you PLEASE tell us what you are currently doing! Although to use your own words "sorry if my question sounds intrusive" !

Of course if you are currently an undercover spy for some national agency, or even what I believe is called a"sleeper" then of course we cannot expect you to divulge such information, national security, official secrets act etc, but I'm starting to get a bit irritated by this! angry

Are you wearing either a plain navy blue trouser and top outfit, or perhaps a kimono by any chance? Stop it with the constant apologies and thanks, I think we can take that as read by now.

Dragonfly1 Tue 01-Jul-14 23:17:55

Kimono???
