Yesterday afternoon I was crossing the road and there was a young scruffy man wandering along the pavement. He looked at me and I looked at him and both of us went our own way. For some reason I looked back and I saw him trying the handle of a car that was one of many parked on the roadside. I went home and decided to ring 101. Well, I can understand why it is called a non urgent number now. It took quite a little while to get through with the usual button pressing options but I have to admit it was all taken seriously and I was thanked for my trouble. I did not give my details but was specific about the location if the illegal activity.
Tonight there was a knock on the door and a police officer asked if I'd seen any untoward activity at the house opposite. I'd not, but mentioned that I had reported an attempted theft in the next road. The officer knew nothing about that! There seems to be no joined up thinking.
Whilst I feel I did the right thing yesterday to assuage my conscience I do wonder whether it was worth me bothering.
