I'm not familiar with 101 (just looked it up and it says it is a non-emergency number for the police) but if they take your call, they would surely pass on the information?

I think if anyone is hanging around your property goldengirl and it's making you feel scared, it might be best to ring 999. Our police are pretty good to respond to older people living alone - even when they suspect it might be nothing more than reassurance that is needed.

I once dialed 999 because a herd of horses were stampeding down a main road towards the traffic lights and was told off because it wasn't a 999 call. Not sure what I would do if it happened again.

Oh heck it's been one of those weeks I think. This afternoon a young man walked in to my drive through one entrance had a look around at my windows and walked out the other to meet his friend who was waiting on the pavement. They appeared to have leaflets in their hands but none were left in my letterbox - for once!!! One pointed up the road and off they went. I was quite scared and once again called 101 and the officer was very supportive. I'm becoming paranoid!

The same goldengirl I think we all need to stand up to the mark even with something that others might think of no importance

You did the right thing. He was probably looking for an opportunity for petty theft. Well done you. flowers

Yesterday afternoon I was crossing the road and there was a young scruffy man wandering along the pavement. He looked at me and I looked at him and both of us went our own way. For some reason I looked back and I saw him trying the handle of a car that was one of many parked on the roadside. I went home and decided to ring 101. Well, I can understand why it is called a non urgent number now. It took quite a little while to get through with the usual button pressing options but I have to admit it was all taken seriously and I was thanked for my trouble. I did not give my details but was specific about the location if the illegal activity.

Tonight there was a knock on the door and a police officer asked if I'd seen any untoward activity at the house opposite. I'd not, but mentioned that I had reported an attempted theft in the next road. The officer knew nothing about that! There seems to be no joined up thinking.

Whilst I feel I did the right thing yesterday to assuage my conscience I do wonder whether it was worth me bothering.

What would you have done?
