What would have happened if you were not computer literate?

I received one of those HMRC letters this morning. After reading of the kerfuffle you had Auntieflo I have decided to wait the 45 days. I do not have a user ID with them so heaven knows how I would log on.

I do not have a user ID either or a passport number so I would also wait the 45 days.

I also had the same letter this morning! HMRC obviously doing a job lot! So. Logged in, got a user id easily enough. Then needed another number to log in with the user id!! Ok, so carried on - automatic phone call gave me the number. Logged in, then security details needed, then passport number needed,.....I will also wait for 45 days and hope my cheque comes sooner.!

Charleygirl, ? That makes me sound clever, no I'm not, just eventually managed to get where I needed to be. I made myself a and it's going down a treat. But, why should we wait 45 days, for our money to be returned to us? They have had the use of it during the year, when in the past a cheque would be winging it's way to us pretty quickly. I know, it's all progress,

Is this not a scam? There are a lot of text and email HMRC notifications being received by family and friends at present. Never ever give passport number, Inland revenue do not ask for it.

How would HMRC expect a passport number, not everyone has a passport, sounds like a scam.

Money Saving Expert (Martin Lewis) posted out an alert this morning about an HMRC tax refund scam. I think it was an email, but be careful in case it's also being circulated in letter form.

I would not answer one single question on any thing that came through from HMRC. If they have a refund for me, I will gladly accept a cheque through the post. There is a scam, and I almost became a party to it, until I realised that the money they were offering to refund me was exactly the same amount I had already received 18 months before hand, and since there had been no change in my circumstances to warrant another refund I ignored the request. Nothing more happened. No cheque. Be careful what information you give out.

If you overpaid tax in Switzerland, they pay you interest on the extra money for the time they have it. Also, if you are renting, the deposit has to be put into a special account and interest paid on it while the landlord holds it. Just saying...

I had a letter saying they owed me £23.50, went online, yes they want to know everything except your bust size! £23.50 deposited in my bank account within days. I must say I prefer this level of security, noone else could answer all the questions, not even my OH!

I'm still waiting for a Road tax refund after selling my old car two months ago.

My notification came by letter, so I'm hoping it's genuine.

I've been receiving a lot of emails recently purporting to come from paypal. Sent the first to their 'spoof' email address and got a reply to say they were looking into it. Sent another (two or three later) but have had no reply ... Shan't be using paypal again

I have had the same notification by letter - arrived last Friday. As I have neither a Passport nor a HMRC ID I have decided to wait the 45 days. It will fairly boost the Bank Account ready for the Christmas Shopping when they send me the £10 I'm due. I have already banked the £2.40 I won on the Lottery - also on Friday.

Do you think my luck has turned at last?

I could be wrong, but I don't think HMRC e mail you and ask for details, good grief even passport details. I am really worried for you that this is a scam. I would suggest if anyone gwts anything like this to telephone or write( A proper letter) to HMRC, and sort it out that way

I'm registered with HMRC, but have never had to give passport details, as I don't have one.

Hrmc never email. I was due a refund and logged into my account to find they had already paid me, OH got his refund without notification. They are a law unto themselves

DH and I each got a tax refund in July and August (they kept me waiting!). They related to the last tax year. We each had a letter saying what we were due and a second letter containing a cheque, in the same post.

I'd be worried about your letter, Auntieflo, though Irma seems to have got her money without a problem.

It depends who is asking the questions and getting the answers, tho.

Actually, Auntieflo, I've just checked on the HMRC website and you can choose to register to have all your tax dealings done online, so you must have chosen to do that at some stage. I think I'll stick to the old paper cheque route, it's easier on the brain!

Don't agree FarNorth I don't tell my OH everything, he'd forget anyway.
