I put mine with the 5.00 vouchers i had collected throughout the year from Morrison's and used the whole lot towards the cost of our Christmas goodies.

If you get a state pension then you get the £10 bonus, mine was paid into my bank account on 5/12/16, not spent mine yet cant decide what to buy lol

I was telling someone the other day about the Christmas bonus of £10. She laughed and said 'what on earth could you get for that?' I told her you could probably get your Christmas Day dinner, including dessert. The week before Christmas, Lidl had (quite large) bags of potatoes, bags of sprouts, carrots and parsnips all for 19p each. We bought a delicious raspberry pavlova from Aldi for £1.49.

Yes, I'm sure it'll be abolished!

Jalima Sun 04-Dec-16 23:12:40

ha ha, I thought you had been missed out grin
It may go up by then - or be abolished!

GrandmaKT Sun 04-Dec-16 23:08:25

Won't be drawing my pension for 9 years yet Jamila!

No, everyone gets it GrandmaKT, check your bank account

There is a non-alcoholic alternative or you could give the wine as a present.

Floradora the equivalent of that £10 (introduced in 1972) today would be:
£127.66 shock

I never even knew there was a Christmas bonus! How much is it? When do you get it? Does everyone get it or just those on Pension Credit?

ninathenana Sun 04-Dec-16 22:48:07

Ah ok, my mistake smile

Jalima Sun 04-Dec-16 21:40:49

but I did remember the sprouts (they're an extra)

Jalima Sun 04-Dec-16 21:40:25

Starter, main course, side and pudding for two with a bottle of wine all for £10

I forgot the starter in my earlier post.

The wine is included in the M&S Dine in for 2 meal offer, nina - that's the only reason I mentioned it...

ninathenana Sun 04-Dec-16 18:44:43

If you really needed the tenner to buy your dinner surely wine would be the last thing you thought of.
Mum always came to us when she was still able. She used hers to buy the turkey for all of us.

Jalima Sun 04-Dec-16 16:33:07

Although I do take your point Floradora, it seems rather meaningless in comparison to what it was worth.

Jalima Sun 04-Dec-16 16:30:24

which could include a whole chicken, a large dish of new potatoes in butter which could be roasted and two portion of nice puds, so some left for Boxing Day, although you would need to buy another bottle of wine for Boxing Day.

Wot - no sprouts?

Ana Sun 04-Dec-16 16:24:47

M&S meal for 2 plus wine?

Floradora9 Sun 04-Dec-16 14:54:01

I quote from the Express
“When it was brought in a pensioner could buy Christmas dinner and still have money left over.

“Today it wouldn’t even buy you the turkey.’’

When the bonus was first introduced it was then worth more than the basic state pension of £6.75 a week, which is £95.25 now.

What is it worth now , probaby not the cost of a meal out for one ?
