Shopping Receipts

This weekend I have been overcharged in two shops, Marks and Spencer charged me for 4 Foam Baths when I only bought 3 and that was because it was a 3 for 2 offer. The next day in Waitrose I was charged for 2 packs of apples instead of one. I will go back to the shop and claim my money back but I am annoyed that I have to. Today in Tesco I was asked if I wanted a receipt and I said yes! This is happening at a lot of shops. As we no longer have a bag given to us and if a receipt is not requested we could be accused of shop lifting with no proof of purchase. So keep taking the receipts and keep checking you have been charged correctly.

Thanks for this. I haven't checked my receipts for years as I thought overcharging was a thing of the past and have often refused a receipt thinking I was saving the paper.
I will now check the prices and ask for a receipt for my supermarket shop!

Completely agree annemac I would be mortified if stopped and accused of not paying so always keep my receipt. My daughters use contactless cards to pay for a lot of things but I do not use them in case of error.

In these days when we re-use bags or bring our own shopping bags we really need to ask for receipts for purchases no matter how small. I'm thinking of shops like Boots and Suoerdrug where you might but mascara or some other make up or perfume and put it in your handbag. When you pass security at door what proof do you have that you've paid for item in your handbag if you don't have receipt? I'm sure shoplifters are having a great time with this and would hate to be one of the people security might stop for a random search. Always get a receipt.

I always ask for a receipt in shops including M&S. Once I was short changed at a till but luckily realised within 2 minutes as I read the receipt - and luckily a manager was loitering nearby too.

The assistant had given me £5 change instead of £10.

Always check I say....

I was recently massively overcharged for an item at John Lewis. It was a genuine error and they couldn't have been more courteous or apologetic. They didn't just refund the difference, they refunded the entire amount!

My DH paid for coffees and slices of cake in a café using his credit card. He nearly left the receipt on the counter but was really glad he didn't because when he checked it his full credit card number and the expiry date were printed on it!

I have just filled my car up with petrol at a Tesco Garage and was asked if I wanted a receipt, first time I have been asked that regarding petrol. I have in the past seen people pay at the pump and then just drop a receipt but I think this is possibly leaving yourself open to fraudulent activities.

I always check all items on my receipts and then the total again against my bank statement as I tend to pay for everything by credit card and then pay the amount in full every month. That means I can collect loyalty points for something I would spend money on anyway.

Tesco will always give refunds without question, I find, if a mistake on price is made. I just take the empty package back next time I shop there, especially if I only bought something which was reduced, only to see on the receipt that it had been charged at full price.

Last week, I bought a packet of mixed salad leaves reduced for 25p to sell that day and, at home, saw the reduced price sticker hadn't covered the original and I was charged £1. Tesco refunded me £1.50. So, I made a profit and had free goods too! It's always worth taking things back if you are charged incorrectly.

I bought a card in a stationers last week and after I paid I realised she had charged me 20p too much. On my query she said the price had gone up to the price sticker on the back. My reply was I would only buy the card at the sticker price. With much huffing I got the refund. I know not much but it's the attitude that got me.

I have found that Tesco often displays one price on the shelf and charges a different ( higher) price at the till. They also display items on a shelf and the price displayed underneath doesn’t relate to that item, and you only find that out if you check the receipt. When I have queried the price at the till they say it’s been put on the wrong shelf! I always get a refund but I wonder how much profit they make from people who don’t check their receipts!

Gosh I really should check my receipts more often. If I think the checkout operator has put something through twice I will query it but I never check my receipt in fact I rarely keep it! ?‍♀️?‍♀️?‍♀️

Goodness. I shall check food receipts in future!

I bought a blouse in a local charity shop, paid on my credit card, didn't look at the amount on the machine, luckily looked at the amount on my receipt before I left the shop...£3,950.00 (instead of £3.95)! Keep checking.

GrandmaCornwall Tue 04-Jun-19 14:28:02

My experience once was being overcharged £100 on a weekly shop then when I questioned it I was told to pay up and query it at the customer service desk!

No way was I going to queue again with three young children whilst my shopping was checked! I said I would leave it. The cashier quickly checked and found she had put two fifty pence items as fifty pounds each. She then knocked them off and we carried on.

It just goes to show sometimes you need to stand your ground.

I've caught Marks and Spencer out at least twice when their till has not acknowledged the offers on display in the shop.
My other pet peeve for M&S is they put fish in what appears to be vegetable dishes 'for flavour' - non-meat/fish stir-fry sauce etc. Why?

Albangirl14 Tue 04-Jun-19 12:44:50

The competition entry inishowen mentioned. I entered a competition on Plenty Kitchen Rolls -you had to give a handy tip for using kitchen roll. My tip was one of the winners but I did not have the receipt several months later long after the competition closed so did not win my £ 1000 . I have not bought Plenty since!

I have a bit of fun when I am asked if I want a receipt. I look a little shocked and say, 'Yes, of course! How would people do their accounts without one?'

I do actually keep a physical account book and file receipts for at least a couple of years but I know few do the same.

Teenagers on the till look at me as if I were out of a Dickens novel. Most amusing.

Samiejb Tue 04-Jun-19 12:11:39

Our local Morrisons has the security man and his screen sitting just inside the door. So when the till says 'do you want a receipt' - of course I do, I've got to get out of here with no hassle.

As for errors - too many for my liking.

Nanny41 Tue 04-Jun-19 12:09:24

I havent kept receipts in food shops before but now I do, as one particular shop often hasnt updated the computer on items reduced that week, now I always check, then throw the receipt in a waste paper bin.

TheOldDear Tue 04-Jun-19 12:04:44

I always check my receipts these days – can’t afford not to. And it’s by no means unusual to find an error. Just yesterday I bought a mouthwash in Asda, shelf price £2.90 instead of the £3.50 or more everyone else charges, but my receipt showed I’d been charged £3.95. Such a pain to have to queue at the customer service desk for such things, but at least they just paid me back the difference on my say-so, without even checking the price.

Legs55 Tue 04-Jun-19 11:59:01

I always check my receipts & also resent being asked "do you want a receipt" , of course I do.

I kept the books for my self-employed ex so receipts were important for anything that went through the business.

I've had several problems with reduced items in ASDA being charged at full price despite having a bright orange sticker on them, I've always waited for my next shopping trip & always got the refund.

Kim19 Tue 04-Jun-19 11:18:58

I always keep my receipts because I check them against CC statement in due course. Buy everything with CC when I can. I also try to use self service checkouts as I can check each item as it goes through at my own pace. I can miss errors if I'm chatting to the server (and I do!) and they are usually pretty speedy processors. Have found the odd discrepancy but, happily, seldom and I have found corrections are made pretty much without hesitation.

Minerva Tue 04-Jun-19 11:11:28

I was once charged for a about a kilo of loose baking potatoes as if they were pick-a-mix sweets! I could hardly not notice something was wrong!

Bijou Tue 04-Jun-19 11:08:37

I often find that there is a reduced price on the shelf but are charged the full price at the till.
I keep all my card receipts until I can check them with my bank statement.

We have the same problem here in France. There is a large supermarket near us where 90% of the time we are overcharged. It came to such a drastic situation that we demanded to see the Manager. She firstly told us "it is the fault of the computer"! Yeah, right! We said "the computer is a machine, it cannot think for itself". Finally she apologised and went to fetch a free bottle of Champagne, but this only after we had been overcharged 17 times!!!
