What should I pay for a mobile phone contract?

I have been with EE for years but today I had a letter to say the cost was going up again by 2.2% (in line with inflation?)
The amount I pay already is extortionate and I would rather pay a lot less. When I first had a phone contract it was around £15 a month. It's now about £50. What am I getting for that? I use WhatsApp to call my long distance family. I take photos and I text a bit and phone sometimes.
I also pay for a landline from BT.
I feel like a dripping roast. Apart from the money going out there is no contact with EE. There is a helpline but should I seek a money saving expert?

Sky mobile are really cheap if you buy your own phone and have one of their sim only plans. BUT I think you have to have a Sky account to start with. They have offers on quite regularly. I pay £3 a month for unlimited calls, unlimited texts and 1gb of data. My husband pays £6 a month for the same deal but with 3gb of data. Our unused data goes into a 'piggybank' for either of us to use if need be. Currently we have 18gb of data in the bank! I got a really decent refurbished Samsung from Music Magpie and my husband bought a refurbished iPhone from ebay. I'm not sure if these deals are still available but even the standard accounts are pretty decent. If you want a top of the range phone then you will probably have to pay a huge amount a month, but I certainly don't!

I have my own iphone6.
My contract is with O2 and is £11 per month.

For that I get unlimited minutes, unlimited texts and 2gb data. I just keep my data switched on all of the time and still only use max 10% of my data.
Can FaceTime my family around the world.

The same as MissAdventure. I'm with EE, bought my phone and pay about £20 a month, unlimited texts, calls and a good amount of data/internet, never been over.

I’m with EE and started with a pay as you go sim which I top up with £10 every month. This gives me a basic package but as I continue to top up every month they give me a choice on a regular basis to boost data or calls. I now have a lot of data and a lot of call time but still pay £10.

Vodafone pay-as-you-go costs me £5 per month for more calls and texts than I ever use, and data which I can't use as I don't have a smart phone. No contract, and even when I get a smart phone I won't want one, I'll just buy the phone.

Tesco Sim only. £11 5GB 1500 mins 5000 texts.
£1 discount for family.
I would definitely query your charge. If they don't reduce I would swap.
We also pay for landline/ internet.

My tesco £10 a month includes a new phone every two years

Granmmaretto, like you, I only need my mobile for calls and texts when I'm not at home otherwise I use Whatsapp for calls (including video calls) and texts. I have my own phone (meaning it was purchased outright and not on contract) with a PAYG SIM from O2. I pay £5 per month for their 'bundle' and get unlimited calls and texts (but no data allowance) in uk and Europe. It's easy to top up and if you don't need it for any reason, i.e. maybe you're in a non-European country, you don't top up at that time. When you're ready to use it again, you just top up. It's very flexible.

It really depends what on what you want from your phone. I like plenty of data so pay extra for 5 GB.

henetha Fri 07-Feb-20 10:06:33

I'm with 3 and only pay £9.50 per month. I get unlimited calls and texts, and 8GB data. More than I ever use.

I’m with EE and always have been. I’m on SIM only and now pay about £10 a month lots of data etc etc. I was also paying a lot but I rang them and said I was going to leave as was paying too much and they reduced it at once. Of course I did get a Geordie answering customer service and you always get sensible action from a Geordie! My son gave me his phone when he upgraded .

annep1 Fri 07-Feb-20 11:36:19

Gosh that's good Henetha. Back to Tesco to negotiate!

Grammaretto Fri 07-Feb-20 12:30:54

I think I must be paying for all the phones in my neighbourhood.
Henetha, yours sounds incredibly good value. I was on 2GB of data but I do remember upping it to 5 as it kept running out.
I will try to get some local help now I am sure I am paying too much.

Grammaretto Fri 07-Feb-20 20:12:27

Well thanks again GN. I have just called EE armed with my almighty bill and your information and I have managed to get my bill reduced to £15 per month. Ok I know it's not as low as some of yours but it is very good news for me.

I asked what I was paying for and it was for "rolling data"? something I had contracted for but didn't need and also for a WiFi modem which we never use so the guy at customer services disconnected these extras and "Downgraded" my phone. I love that smile
He promised me I wouldn't notice a difference. The new contract is actually giving more than the old. (well that's what he said)

It feels really good to do this and I wish I had done it ages ago.

annep1 Fri 07-Feb-20 21:15:22

Well done Grammaretto!

MissAdventure Fri 07-Feb-20 22:51:37

Oh I love it when something like this happens. smile

EE don't seem very keen on letting their customers know they have better deals.

My bill was similar to yours, and I just looked on their website, found a much better deal and swapped.
They hadn't let me know I was able to do that, having finished my last deal months before.

Grammaretto Fri 07-Feb-20 23:11:53

MissAdventure grin
I am glad you have got some satisfaction too. They depend on us being lazy and loyal.

MissAdventure Fri 07-Feb-20 23:17:10

Well, I had a marvellous result by changing my gas/electric supply, thanks to Gabriella on here.
I was paying £110 a month, changed to 'Bulb', paid £56 a month for about 5 months, and they've just put it down to £44!

Grammaretto Sat 08-Feb-20 10:48:25

That's so good MissAdventure
I am definitely going to have a serious look at my finances.
Awful to think I was paying more for my phone than you pay for gas and electric!

Chestnut Sat 08-Feb-20 11:35:40

Glad to hear you've saved money Grammaretto but don't forget you can go as low as £5 per month if money is tight. You just need your PAC code from EE. You get a new SIM card but you can keep your phone and your phone number.

ElaineI Sat 08-Feb-20 18:37:56

Glad that the forum has helped you. Sadly nowadays it seems we need to check all suppliers annually or end up paying over the odds.

with sky.com £3.75 a month unlimited calls and texts, small amount internet which i don't use. with post office for broadband and landline, £15.90 a month search around end of contract for cheap deals but have been with sky mobile for 3 years now. don't have sky on television at all

seacliff Wed 13-May-20 16:25:48

Fantastic result, Gransnet at its' best!

I bought an android phone for about £100 several years ago, Vodafone Ultra 6. I just have a Vodafone very occasional top up, not a contract, I pay maybe £3 a month if that. Vodafone is best signal in our area. I rarely use the mobile when out, partly due to wanting to keep cost down.

We have a landline with broadband, so I use WhatsApp to ring Australia free, and to chat to family. Fantastic. Also for photos and surfing the net, at home.

My phone I think may be getting a bit past it, as it's slow now. I am reluctant to get a expensive contract that includes phone cost. So maybe I should just buy another reasonable priced phone. Any suggestions please?

lemsip Wed 13-May-20 16:28:11

to add to above, I have my own sim free phone so just insert new sim if you change. look up cheap sim only deals!
