A couple of years ago I left my High Street bank and opened an account with First direct which is purely online. I am quite happy with it but I’m getting a bit worried about all the stories about hacking. The rate they are closing High Street banks as well looks like in the not too distant future online banking may be the only option....Thoughts please

My DH worked in a national bank so was obliged to have his salary paid into one of their accounts. As it is our joint account, my salary went in too. (Oddly this gave us fewer banking opportunities than other customers and we were not given a reduced mortgage rate but hey ho.) He worked as an auditor so rigorously checked various aspects in the bank including the potential for fraud and embezzlement. We’ve used internet banking for years and always log on with the iPad as we feel it’s safer. We find the bank constantly checks via text message if we want to make a payment (say to big river) and phones us if we try to use a card when we’re away. This keeps us happy.
Electronic transfers for us are so speedy. We can’t recall the last time a cheque book was used.

Online/internet banking is pretty safe and so much easier to keep an eye on things. Just never share things like pins and passwords and if you’re using a laptop make sure you’ve got anti virus etc. If it’s an app on your phone have a secure lock on it. Don’t store pins/passwords on it.

I work in the fraud dept for one of the main banks and see people who are very careful and who refuse to have online banking or shop online etc still become victims of fraud.

I hardly use the High Street Bank - except the cashpoint..... I manage my accounts online. Have done so for several years and have no problems ...

I still use the post office to pay cheques in, very old hat!

I check my spending and balance each day. Had my card cloned few years back and didn't notice money gone for a week. I never use outside cashpoints anymore either.

I have internet banking on my laptop. It's brilliant.

I ve done internet banking for years with Lloyds and never had a jot if trouble in fact they are so on the ball at checking if it’s me paying a new person and using my phone with code numbers to prove it’s me etc

However many years ago when I applied to First Direct they refused me, I was puzzled as I’m pretty good with money and the reason given was I am too clean I ve never owed any money and always paid off cards etc on time that was the reason they did not want me banking with them I suppose they wouldn’t make any money out of me

DH has had too much trouble with thieves spending on his credit card (from a major bank) to be wiling to trust any of them with my money.

I otherwise use the internet for everything else, but where flows of real genuine money are involved, I am still very cautious. My closest friend works with somene who is an expert in these systems - and he refuses to use internet banking. He says it is too easy to hack.

We use a particular computer and a virtual keyboard to do it. Never use our everyday computers because we feel they could be vulnerable.

Yes we do everything on line or with debit cards. One account is with HSBC and if they notice any unusual transactions they contact us. If we make any payments to anybody new they send us a code to our phone and the payment will only be made after we authorise it. Santander does the same. We never answer emails or texts about our bank accounts, just check the transactions every few days. We disconnected our land lines to stop the possibility of telephone scams. We are very happy with Internet banking and have used it to send money to our children and grandchildren during the past year when we couldn’t see much of them. I honestly couldn’t live without Internet banking, debit cards and direct debits. We actually had a cheque each last week and I had to go into the bank to pay them in, I can’t remember the last time I did it.charleygirl5 if you set up the app on your phone it is much easier to log on, just a 6 digit code once it is set up.

You don’t need to go into the bank to pay in chqs. Take a photo of it and send to your bank. It is dead easy and full instructions on the site.

I have one sitting ready to do.

My bank is now advising me by a drop down thing in my iPad every time there is a payment taken out.

I was wary of it and wouldn’t consider it despite encouragement from my AC. I eventually gave in and installed the banking app on my iPhone about 4 years ago. It’s been problem free and I find it very convenient. I sign in most days for a quick glance that everything is ticking over. I wouldn’t like to be without it now.

Very easy from my laptop, can't see the need to have it on my phone as well.

Would never recommend Barclays, appalling customer service, and they were forever locking me out for 'unusual activity' such as my supermarket shop, without telling me. After some embarrassing incidents at petrol stations I vowed never to touch them again. HSBC have been okay, though I am uncomfortable with the Chinese connection.

Shandy57 Mon 19-Apr-21 13:54:30

I bank on-line, but don't feel comfortable installing the app on my phone in case I lose it.

timetogo2016 Mon 19-Apr-21 13:52:18

No,i don`t trust it but dh does and he thinks it`s brilliant.

Charleygirl5 Mon 19-Apr-21 13:42:55

I have done internet banking for years and do get myself locked out and it is a faff getting online again. I do have the app on my phone but I have never had the courage to use it.

dragonfly46 Mon 19-Apr-21 13:39:16

I have found recently that everything is done online these days. I am executor of my mother's will and I am having to do everything online - even signing documents. Registration of death was online and the death certificate, closing balances are sent online and applying for probate is online. It must cost time and money to have to do everything by letter these days and with some institutions there is nowhere to go anymore.

annodomini Mon 19-Apr-21 13:29:20

Yes, I do internet banking. All the banks (four) in this small town have closed in the last decade and the Post Office isn't easily accessible. It's difficult for some people who don't use the internet and don't have their own transport.

HillyN Mon 19-Apr-21 12:49:25

We've been doing internet banking with First Direct almost since they began and they have been very good. I also do business internet banking with HSBC and they do seem pretty security aware.

Nonogran Mon 19-Apr-21 12:38:07

I have on line accounts with two different banks. I'm totally comfortable with it. Have been on line for many many years.
I have shied away from an App on my phone as in reality, day to day I don't need it.
I change my passwords regularly. Works for me.

Jaxjacky Mon 19-Apr-21 12:35:32

I use it and have an app on my phone, I log in on the iPad if I need to set up new standing orders or similar. So many people including most tradesmen take bacs payment now and at a glance I can check balance, payments in/out. Large purchases online I have to verify and do so through the app, it’s very quick, never had any problems. My phone is welded to me anyway!

Pantglas2 Mon 19-Apr-21 12:26:48

I’ve used internet banking for many years for the ease of checking ins and outs and balances daily. Couldn’t bear to wait a month for a paper statement!

Kim19 Mon 19-Apr-21 12:00:29

No. Never been tempted. I do believe all banks will sort out scams etc., but I can't be bothered with the potential faff that might be involved in doing so. I also check my balances very regularly. Mind you, when their systems 'go down' we're stuck anyway. Happily I have found that to be very much rarer these days.

DH sold a car last week to a young man ( young to me) who owned an internet company. He said everything and anything can be hacked. I opened an account on line for the Pandemic to pay bills and to receive payments in but I keep only a small amount in it.
