At the moment I work four afternoons a week in a care home 2 pm till eight at night and I do enjoy the work but I am thinking of dropping one day and going down to 18 hours. What I would like to know is how badly that will impact my wages I earn 925 an hour for the three week days I work and 975 an hour for the Sunday I work, as I am a pensioner it is logged in with my pension and I paid probably about £140-£160 a month tax.So my question is to you ladies is how much worse offf do you think l will be? (I will not drop the Sunday as that’s the one hard to cover) thanks in anticipation ?

You would be better paid and the work is less exhausting physically as a till operator at any of the large supermarket stores.

Thanks CharleyG but I do really enjoy the work…

Your weekly pay would drop by £55 gross, but you’d need to look at your tax allowance and code to work out how much less you’d pay in tax.

Try this calculator, Shinamae.
It's a recommended one to work out different variations of your circumstances.

In your place I would ask the book-keeper or wages clerk to work the sum out for you and give you the answer in writing.

You ought to be able to tell her in confidence that you are considering reducing your hours of work a little.

Shinamae Please don't even consider working on the tills at a supermarket. I think it's great that you say you love your work so I imagine that, even though your wages in no way represent your value, you have no intention of leaving. Those who are in your care are very lucky. Thank goodness for people like you.

I hope you find you are able to reduce your hours and have a little more time to yourself.
