Had an email about this this morning. They say the charge is too expensive. Surely amazon can afford this?

Hellogirl1

Is that meaning all Visa cards, including debit cards, or just credit cards?

I think this may be a scam email if Amazon intended this change it would be all over the media and business press.

It's not a scam email. It was in the press this morning.

A Brexit benefit

PayPal is another alternative but do not know if Amazon will accept. I use it for EBay purchases.

Debit cards are highly dangerous. If stolen or cloned your bank account can be emptied. A credit card gives you protection against fraud.
I have started to carry more cash - never more than £100 - so if you lose your wallet it is not the end of the world.

You can buy Amazon gift cards from some supermarkets, so could use cash, but most people happily use credit and debit cards there.

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 17-Nov-21 11:52:45

How do you buy the Amazon gift cards without using a credit or debit card?

Wheniwasyourage Wed 17-Nov-21 11:50:29

Rarely use Amazon, but when we do, we use the Amazon gift cards to pay, never our own bank cards of any kind. They hold too many details already, and it's worth having a couple of pounds of credit left over just to keep our bank card numbers away from Amazon.

My DH uses his Visa Credit card for all his online payments and Amazon have just offered him £20 if he changes to his Mastercard.

I tend to use Paypal for everything.

Amazon are not the only company to do this, or at least threaten it. Another American retail company ( sorry forgotten the name but behinds with a K) did this last year, stopped allowing Visa cards for six months then reinstated it - possibly after renegotiating the fees charged by Visa.

I have a MasterCard credit card so am not affected.

I’ve always used my credit for Amazon for the extra protection I’m not comfortable using my debit card so it’s either get a new credit card or stop buying from them. I wonder if they’ll change tack when they start losing massive amounts of custom.

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 17-Nov-21 11:02:56

This will hit the many small businesses who sell through Amazon and which I otherwise wouldn’t have found. I’m sure Amazon takes its pound of flesh from them though.

credit cards do offer greater purchase protection between £100 to 30k. This was a great reminder to cancel prime!

Well it will the end of my days shopping on Amazon I am not being forced into a credit card.

You are not being forced to use a credit card You can still use debit cards Visa or others

Martin Lewis is suggesting that this could be a ploy from Amazon to re-negotiate their Visa fees down?

Elegran Wed 17-Nov-21 10:28:00

This appears to be true. It is all over the online news sites, so it doesn't look like a scam.

Haven’t got a credit card, only a debit card, and have always used it for online purchases. Maybe I should get a credit card?

You'd need to check it out, but I think a credit card gives a bit more protection than a debit card on purchases. If you don't want to run up debt, just do what I've always done, pay it off in full every month, so in effect using it like a debit card. They've never had a penny interest from me grin

TerriBull Wed 17-Nov-21 10:17:16

I've just got one, I thought a scam surely, but then I see posts on here to the contrary. Nevertheless I'm not updating any of my details. I only buy from them as a last resort.

I think it may affect their sales, but they are hardly struggling, Maybe it will be a good thing if people decide not to patronise them quite as much hmm

Mapleleaf Wed 17-Nov-21 09:58:54

They’ve kept it very quiet for their customers then, if it’s happening this coming January.

MerylStreep Wed 17-Nov-21 09:57:07

If your worried about your card on Amazon, remove the card after your purchase, then put it on again when you next order.
It only takes a few seconds.

rosie1959 Wed 17-Nov-21 09:56:45

Interesting our bank has recently changed from Visa to MasterCard

Alegrias1 Wed 17-Nov-21 09:53:33

Is it another Brexit bonus?
