Premium Bonds - April 2022

There is an article in the Times today about PBonds. Apparently it can be difficult to get them back without probate if the holder dies.
I.e. your DH dies and leaves everything to you. You don’t need to do probate for anything except the bonds.

I wonder if things have changed in the last four years. There was no problem whatsoever in late 2017, when my dad died, getting the premium bond money back for my mum.

When my son was 8 he won £1000 on the premium bonds bought for him by my Granny. Unfortunately, this made him think he was rich for life so didn't think he needed to work at school any more! Wish I hadn't told him about his win.

I won £25 this month, nothing for DH. You do need quite a few to win regularly!

When my Savings Bond matured, I put the lot into Premium Bonds. I have not won anything in the past 6 months ?

I’ve had a modest £20 worth of bonds for 50 odd years. I won £75. Not this month. It was 32 years ago?

£25 this month next month will be the big one, maybe ?

Have had my £1 bond since the 50s and my daughter’s £5 in 73. I have just dug then out because of this forum and realize they have had the wrong address and name for the last thirty-three years. Maybe …..
The web site doesn’t show the unclaimed numbers of the last 33 years because I don’t have the ‘codes’ only the name and numbers. Tomorrow’s job, write and send off a letter through the post. Fingers crossed.

My husband and I have never won anything on ours. Do people have large amounts in premium bonds ? We only have 3 between us so the probability is greatly reduced I know but wondering if it would be worth putting say £100 each .

You need quite a large amount (£10,000 +) to win a reasonably regular prize. Unless you’re exceptionally lucky of course.
If you look at the list of winners every month, occasionally someone with a small amount of bonds wins big - BUT very occasionally!

DH and I have won every month (bar 1) in the past year. This month I won £50 and DH won £75. This is unusual - our wins are usually £25 each.

Instead of a cheque dh has received a letter which he has to sign to get the £25 it says he has won. Anybody else had this?

That is strange 25Avalon. I do not have the full amount so any winnings buy more.

No never had a cheque. Either paid into my bank or buy more bonds

We have ALL our savings, (£35,000), in Premium Bonds.
So far this year we've won £25 in January, and £25 this month. I signed up for email notification, and for winnings to go directly into our bank account, as opposed to a cheque in the post.
I'm able to see anonymised details of where winners live, how much they have invested, and how much they have won. I'm afraid the big prizes are largely won by people who have the maximum holding of £50,000.
I haven't bothered to analyse the numbers, but I would say that roughly at least 75% of the big winnings go to people with the maximum holding - which is logical I guess, but a bit disappointing for the rest of us!

LindyLou2020 you’ve confirmed what I suspected but didn’t want to impolitely ask about the amount held by regular winners. It sounds like my 50 year old £20 bond is unlikely to produce another win since its first success 32 years ago!
