Things which show you are wealthy

MzOops had a friend who parents were a ‘Lord and Lady’ , all furniture was good quality - passed down through the generations and falling apart, huge property in Holland Park, also showing signs of wear, various properties in the U.K., all showing their age.
They always left stuff laying around, house was in a mess because they knew that somebody would be along to pick it all up and clean up after them. True as they had staff.
Scruffy ( but at one time good quality ) clothing and shoes, unless they were going somewhere ‘posh’ when the family jewels would come out of the safe. Houses were cold and they wore layers of clothing, but doors and windows left wide open
( fond memories of unheated dorms at boarding school)
Disorganised, but with voices that would carry across a Gymkhana field and lots of smelly dogs that were carried in filthy vehicles.
Takes all sorts.

Sensible, good quality shoes which look as good after 10 years as the day they were bought. Dog walking in old clothes that don't match and are unironed . Wearing of headscarf. Children wearing second hand school uniform with Startrite shoes.

That reminds me of my husband showing the children photographs of his late Father and the children aying, 'Oh Grandad was so posh' turns out it was because in all the photos (weddings/parties etc) he was wearing a full suit ?

loads of really wealthy people have bad teeth ?

I have two upright pianos but no room for a grand. They are regularly played, though. My teeth are my own and fine and l wear minimal jewellery. I like to wear the best shoes l can afford and do not wear logos on clothes. Somehow, though, I don’t think anyone would mistake me for wealthy.

This has reminded me to take my boots to be mended before the bad weather sets in. I don't buy more of anything if what I already have can be mended.

They did Meryl. I had a Burberry trenchcoat back in the early 80s. Lovely and it never wore out but the time came when I wouldn't be seen dead in it. Hopefully someone who went into the charity shop felt differently.

D'you think folk assume I'm loaded if I use a little Ikea carrier as a day bag??

I think your getting your Burberry mixed up with your Barbours. The chavs nearly destroyed the Burberry brand.

These posts have been utterly hysterical. Tears of laughter and so familiar and true!

I was always told real toffs don't care and they generally do wear old clothes and are extremely frugal about heating. So I guess a lot more of us will qualify soon!

Enough money to get by for the moment but haven't received our new electricity bill yet. I have fairly average shoes as I'm only looking for something comfortable that fits. We have no dogs, but we do have a piano (not grand) which never gets played. (Does anyone want one - free of charge but customer pays for removal). (We're in Devon.)

I've just said an emotional goodbye to mine after 23 years!
I now have a new kid on the same block and our dear friend has been donated to the apprentices in the workshops of the dealership to beautify (and de-rust?).

Your car sounds like mine nannypiano but mine’s 15 years old, very low mileage and the mechanic drools over it when it has its MoT. It is beautiful!

I wear jeans that a charity shop would turn down if offered, trainers years old, that are the only comfortable footwear I own and a nine year old car that everyone seems to think is wonderful, because rarely driven, so immaculate. Not wealthy or poor.

I have never been wealthy. Always struggle.but I remember someone saying that if you have a good haircut and good shoes everything in between takes care of itself.

Not having to go to the Food Bank!!
Having lights on.
Not having an overdraft but able to get one if needed.
A decent vocabulary.
Having paid off the mortgage!!!!
Wealthy is not talking about the ‘value’ of your home.
Being eccentric is compulsory.
I liked the statement about having a Burberry jacket standing on its own - well that’s because it gets waxing annually. Otherwise it’s not waterproof.

Real money just buys operations, social care and cars whenever they need them. I only know 2 truly wealthy couples.

That’s money, Edith. Wealth is far more subtle.

I've never really thought about it, as I have always known I never would be rich.

However, let's give it a try.

Playing that grand piano would be high on my list. Being able to go to the theatre or a concert whenever I wanted to, irrespective of what the tickets cost comes next.

Buying any book I wanted, again without having to think of the cost,

Being able to phone Caritas and say they could fetch 20 injured, reconvalecent children from Ukraine and either their mother or grandmother here for a fortnight's holiday, and that I would foot the bill.

Owning horses and stables, belonging to a tennis club, 4/5 cars on a large forecourt and designer casual clothes.

The wealthiest person I know has ancient title, land and country pile, looks like a tramp - but he's a lovely person.

I have all bar minimal jewellery ( unless counting hugeness of stones?) And piano! Wealthy? Me? Not really just really really good at " putting it together" and looking the part , I also have a non descript vaguely northern accent so not pinned to an area. It's style not class that comes across .I always say wealthy/ posh types can't dress properly or dance?!

Modesty is definitely a sign too.
