There isn't much difference. I am in a civil partnership and afaik the differences are only technical, e.g. a marriage is formed by the ceremony, a CP is formed by signing the register.

No difference in terms of IHT. There may be some differences with some private pensions. If this applies to them, they would need to check with the scheme's administrators.

Is there much difference in a civil partnership or marriage?

My friend and partner have been together for decades but never married and never had children.

She thinks they should do something now to avoid Inheritance Tax if either of them dies.

Are there other advantages/disadvantages of either.
