Coutts - what is the proportion of GN members who

Approx 20 years ago my DH sold something to someone who lived in a little terraced house on the wrong side of town. The lady wrote him a Coutts cheque for about £300. We just couldn't get our heads around it. We didn't know whether to cash it or frame it!

So, a special bank, with very specific criteria for customers- most of us won't fit them- that's fine. He does no longer, and loses his account and is offered an 'ordinary' one, like the vast majority +++ have - fair enough.

I am more likely to tool my high-perch phaeton down St. James's than to have an account with them. 🙂

Baroness Coutts in the mid 19C was so impressed with my OH's grandfather's art work, that she gave him a grant to study art in London. He became quite famous, thanks to her sponsorship.

I would say that a very small proportion of GN members have an account with Coutts.

Coutts doesn't extend to Europe nanna8. It is purely and simply UK. They also have Crown Dependencies in Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man. The reason my father had an account in Jersey was that, although British, he resided abroad and benefited from having his finances managed offshore.

In my childhood things priced in guineas seemed to be luxury items such as "upmarket" clothing and gifts.

I remember hearing about a relative who lost all his money in the 1929 banking crash. It left me with the feeling that life can be very uncertain and best not to put all your money in a bank. So anyone with a Coutts account seems very trusting to me. In any event isn’t only the first £85k safeguarded by the government?

Coutts is not by any means the only company which offers private banking in the UK to high net worth individuals.

I assumed the OP was simply being ironic in a lighthearted way when they opened this thread. High street banks are good enough for me.

I’d never heard of them until the Nigel Farage business, they must be just European. We’re with the CBA, Commonwealth bank. I am tempted by the Bendigo Bank , my club uses them and they seem very community minded.

My Great Uncle had a Coutts bank account. I remember being given a cheque for my birthday. Their cheques were bigger and squarer than normal.

I didn't realise it meant he was a wealthy so and so.
