... have an account with Private Banking at Coutts.

What are the conditions to have an account with them?
I imagine you have to be pretty rich. We certainly would have never fitted their client profile.

I wouldn’t dream of divulging who I bank with on an internet forum…

Grantanow Sun 30-Jul-23 14:54:31

None of your business!

When I read the OP my initial reaction was, MYOB.

A badly worded question.

BlueBelle Sun 30-Jul-23 14:43:58

Well I m happy to answer
No never been near a Coutts never seen a Coutts bank have no interest in one and as long as I can eat and shop in the charity shop I m a happy bunny

Wyllow3 Sun 30-Jul-23 14:42:22

I read the O/P as pretty light hearted really with a bit of a dig at the possibly super rich, and so on. Who's "acceptable".

MerylStreep Sun 30-Jul-23 14:38:09

The more you read the OP, the more you think, blooming cheek.

Coutts could help; they compile dossiers about the private lives of their customers.

You could ask the BBC 🙂

Unless every GN member gives a truthful reply to the original question it’s impossible to answer. And you could never know if all members had responded, nor whether replies were truthful, so why pose the question? Why don’t you simply ask bluntly if any of us banks with Coutts? Not that you’re likely to get any affirmative replies given that the criteria for holding a Coutts account have recently been well publicised.

Good points, Germanshepherdsmum but I don't mind giving the OP a run for her money, even though what was asked is jolly nosey!
Believe it or not, my father used to write me Jersey Coutts cheques for £5.5s to buy a doll or similar toy.
I'm sure GSM can verify how the assets are laid out in the schedules. Here's my proof.

So yes, the question was very clear, and my answer is very clear too, though you can guess for yourself who I have an account with currently, because like others have said ....
No way am I sharing any details of my financial affairs!!

I believe Swiss banks are very good.

Oh yes, very discreet.

Would you like my card details and PIN number too?

No, your address and burglar alarm code should be enough😂

Foxygloves Sun 30-Jul-23 13:36:37

There was nothing hypothetical in the wording of OP’s question which was direct, unequivocal and downright nosey.

Blossoming Sun 30-Jul-23 13:34:15

Quite possibly Foxygloves. No way am I sharing any details of my financial affairs

Foxygloves Sun 30-Jul-23 13:29:49

I give up
Lost in translation?

hypothetical question.

To what extent can a private business, not government owned, decide what their own rules are for doing business with them, and refuse or close accounts of people who do not fit in their profile?

Coutts closed my account, the reason they gave was because I'm on Gransnet.
It's too political, apparently.

Made me laugh🤣

Farzanah Sun 30-Jul-23 13:19:05

I prefer banking with Building Societies rather than banks for ethical reasons.

Coutts - what is the proportion of GN members who ... have an account with Private Banking at Coutts

It sounds like a straightforward, not hypothetical, question but it would require knowing the exact number of posters registered on Gransnet and the number who are willing to admit to having a private account with Coutts to be able to work out a percentage.

Aveline Sun 30-Jul-23 13:09:44

I prefer to keep my trunks of gold bullion under my bed.

We aren’t just talking about a private business. We are talking about banking where there are very strict rules and regs as to what you can and can’t do.
Why do you think millions got money back over mis-selling: it was against the rules.

MerylStreep Sun 30-Jul-23 12:38:45

that would exclude most of us
It would exclude most of the uk population.
