No Spend January

Hello,

My challenge for January is to spend no money at all.

I’m aiming to use up all my leftovers and freezer contents to make interesting meals.

Also have a good store cupboard for tinned food, cleaning stuff etc.

Has anyone else tried this??

No spend January
Can anyone tell me how I could persuade my husband ?
Not to elaborate due to health issues I was not driving for about 18 months so unable to shop Not my favourite occupation at best of times
Husband has become a compulsive shopper
We live in a small town with two not very large supermarkets
The problem is the Lidl card. Spend over a certain amount in a month and you get a 10% voucher plus you get various offers
Get my picture I have had 8 packets of dishwasher tablets of type I don’t really like. 5 butternut squash. 3 1/2 pounds of butter 12 bars of chocolate. Enough cheese to make fondue for an army I could go on. One doesn’t exist in his vocabulary
I have two freezers full the second he bought in a panic at beginning of Covid.
Oh I nearly forgot. Yellow stickers just call out put me in your trolly I sware sometimes he doesn’t look to see what they are
Please no one tell me to tell him not to, son and I have tried all to no avail. I just felt like a good moan
Now Amazon. …………….. the story could go on

Mell967 It seems to me you either shopped up before 1 Jan or are a wasteful shopper. Do the majority of pet owners hold a month or more of pet food inntheir home, unless stocking up before a period of not shopping for it or have you accidentally ended up with more pet food than nornmal.

I buy a 15kg bag of dog food, once a month and no I never have any more dog food than I need

Sorry forgot to add I am not a wasteful shopper.
What makes you think that??

TBH, aren’t we too old for scrimping and saving ? Unless you wish to leave your children a large inheritance…

My son certainly will not have any inheritance

With birthdays, other unexpected happenings, not possible I would have thought.

P.S, hope you don’t need to visit the dentist or optician this month.

Sorry, but I would say it’s totally impossible to spend not a penny in January. Fresh produce, milk, etc needs to be bought at least weekly, bills need to be paid.
Trying to use up what you have is admirable, and perhaps that’s what you mean? However, to not spend anything at all, not a penny, for the 31 days of January is, I would suggest, virtually impossible for just about everybody. Bus fares anyone? Petrol for the car? Fuel & utility bills?

Oreo Fri 05-Jan-24 21:41:47

I can’t go for a month without spending money and am amazed that anyone can.
I don’t have huge cupboards or freezers stuffed with food but need to buy regularly.
What I can and will do tho is to not buy anything that I don’t need, so no money spent on clothes, make up, perfume, alcohol.Jan and Feb will be leaner months.

Jaxjacky Fri 05-Jan-24 21:23:40

It’s an admirable challenge, but I couldn’t do it, two birthdays in January and a freezer costs less to run the fuller it is.
Good luck.

Haven’t just paid last months Amazon bill. I am definitely cutting down on that. 🤦‍♀️

As long as you haven’t paid your Amazon bill, then that’s ok 😉

I feel so guilty after reading 👆- I’ve just bought a lovely new leather handbag for daily use. I’ve been using the current bag for well over 2 years, day-in and day-out. So ‘Twas time for a change.

Januart?? 🤔

It's a good challenge though I'd need to buy fresh fruit as well as milk. Maybe set a minimum amount?
It just turns 'using up and clearing out' into a bit of fun.
Good luck!

We have so much home-grown frozen fruit that it could last us for months!
And enough veg for Januart, apart from potatoes.

I do this each January. Use up all the Christmas food and also cupboard, fridge and freezer. I save my nectar points through the year and spend them for anything I need to buy. Good mental exercise and stuff doesn’t go out of date. Makes me feel virtuous too!

mumofmadboys Fri 05-Jan-24 20:05:37

We also are trying to buy as little food as possible and use up the contents of our two freezers. I will then defrost the smaller one and clean it out.

Millie22 Fri 05-Jan-24 20:04:26

I always have an economy month in January as there is a lot of pre Christmas spending. It's basically any extras apart from food obviously and household costs.

Every year I try and make it last until the 31st. Not always successfully.

Galaxy Fri 05-Jan-24 20:03:38

Today I bought cinema tickets and paid fof parking. Good for the local economy and for me. Well the parking was a means to an end but ither than that it was lovely.

Total nonsense. Fresh fruit and veg, eggs, milk? And I’m assuming you don’t have a pet or feed the birds.

Why nonsense?
Yes I do have a dog, but won’t need food for her until next month.
I don’t feed the birds.
I have long life milk and don’t use eggs and use frozen veg and fruit which are already in the freezer

January is a good time to cut down on spending and using up some of what you have stored is a good idea.
I hope it goes well for you.

I think it's a good idea to reduce spending on unnecessary stuff. Good for you!

We tend towards spending as little as possible, January seems an excellent time to give it a go. Good Luck.

We eat lots of fresh veg and fruit. For us that can't be avoided, but silly stupid spending can always be cut to the bone. Well done you!

Casdon Fri 05-Jan-24 19:37:50

Ignore the naysayers Mel1967 and see how long you can go without spending anything, there’s certainly no harm in trying. Let us know how you get on, and what it is that makes you break your resolution.
I keep milk, bread and frozen fruit in the freezer in case we get snowed in, so none of those things would be my nemesis - it would probably be dog food, because I could manage without most things, but the dog can’t.
