Hello all, has anyone still not received their letter from DWP regarding their state pension increase? My husband got his a couple of weeks ago and my sister got hers a month ago but nothing for me.

BlueBelle Sat 15-Jun-24 18:30:35

You might want to start a new thread Grayling about the actual pension increase rather than receipt of the advisory letters.
As I understand it, the increase in DWP was 8.5% from April.

I am H and I received mine many weeks ago. I also receive notification of the winter allowance in good time.

I have just dipped in to this thread to see if anyone had posted about the rise in pension which had happened in March. Speaking to various friends (mainly widowed) we were anxious to see how much we were about to receive. I have now checked my bank transactions and have worked out that I am now receiving £5.01 extra monthly! I did receive quite a decent rise in my government pension which includes my entitlement from my late husband's state pension. However my tax code was obviously changed and larger deductions were made from my husband's work pension and my very small work pension (due to my being part time when children were growing up). The old phrase "give with one hand and take away with the other" springs to mind!!!

I'm curious. Do those who have had no increase letter receive a letter informing them of the winter fuel allowance?

My DH and I both had winter fuel letters. He got his weeks before me, but hasn't received a pension increase letter. Curiouser and curioser!

Mine came today. I am a 'W' so think they are alphabetical.

I'm "B" and I still haven't had one.

Don't think so. Mine came months ago, DH, who is older, hasn't received his. We are at the beginning of the alphabet.

Yes, but husband hid it, so i would not see it.

Do you know the reason he did this?

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 03-Apr-24 16:08:38

Why did your husband hide your letter Gossamer? It’s important that you know your financial situation.

I rang the Pension Service this morning, as I have not yet received a letter with the new amount that I should expect.
I actually got through the second time, after being cut off the first time.
Was told that they are still being sent out, and if I have not heard by next week, to ring again, and one will be sent.

They might be doing by NI numbers, which is linked to DOB. That's why you haven't had them my DH was born in '55, and had his last week.

Your NI number has no personal information about you; it is a randomly allocated reference number.

The prefix is simply two letters that are allocated to each new series of NI number. Theoretically two people born in the same year applying for a NINO at the same time could be allocated a numbr from the same batch. But equally, one sixteen year and one eighteen year old applying at the same time could also be allocated a number from the same batch.

The single letter suffix can be A, B, C or D. These were important in the early days of NIC where employers had to purchase NI stamps and stick them on cards for each employee. When the cards were complete, when they had a whole year’s worth of stamps attached, the employer had to send them to the then DSS in quarterly batches according to the suffix letter. Nowadays the suffix has no relevance for employers.

I was born in 1955 and receive new state pension. The letter informing me of my 2024 increase is dated 27 January 2024. My name is near the start of the alphabet

I don’t know why the letters are issued in the order that they are or why some people don’t appear to receive a letter at all.

I do know that the number of NINOs held on DWP systems is always much higher than the UK population. This is because once allocated, a record remains on the department’s system. This includes both deceased records and where an individual leaves this country. This is because it provides a permanent numerical link between the individual and their National Insurance record, which determines entitlement to contributory benefits.

Around 600,000 people in the UK die each year and those records have to stay in the system. For example, a deceased husband’s records must stay in the system in case his wife is entitled to claim some element of inherited pension when she reaches state pension age. There was a fourteen year gap between when I was widowed and claiming my state pension. I receive a small supplement which is 50% of DH’s additional state pension. His records had to be there for DWP to be able to calculate that even though he had been dead for fourteen years.

These annual letters are a case of batch selection and processing, selecting from probably over 100 million or more NIC records to find the around 13 million people who receive the state pension. The sheer numbers in terms of computer processing, printing, enveloping and delivery is vast and has to be done in batches over a number of months.

I’ve never had a letter informing me of the increase in April each year, but my bank account shows I get it of course.

Mr PG always gets a letter but I assumed it was because he’s on the old pre2016 pension with additional SERPS etc which, in total, is a lot higher than my standard post2016 pension.

@pantglas2
A good point for all those who think the 'new' pension is always higher than the pre 2016 pension.

Received my pension letter today. As I will be 66 end of April. Told me I will get one off payment of X amount in May then a regular amount of X from date in June then same amount every 4 weeks. Having it in black and white means I can budget .

Cazza1953 Mon 01-Apr-24 18:23:04

My sister got a letter about the pension rise weeks ago, but I’ve had nothing and it starts next week.
