Amazon Account

Be aware guys, my wife has just had her Amazon account hacked, they had both card numbers and contact details, no harm she picked it up and cards have been cancelled.

If you have any cards registered with Amazon to make payment quicker a scammer can see them and your contact details. Maybe a bit too convenient!.

Yes, we do have responsibility to check accounts very often. With on-line banking, this takes just seconds. Each morning, when I have my brekkie I use my phone to do a check on my bank accounts, and my credit card. That way, it could never be more than 24 hours when I would pick up any unauthorised use.
I keep a small notebook, in which I record ALL credit card payments. Not only, does this help me to see how much I am spending, but also gives me a wonderful record of when an item was purchased.

Thank you David, this prompted me me check my credit card account, where I found an unusual transaction.
I knew it hadn't been me.
I was just about to phone my bank, but decided to check with DH, who rarely shops. It was indeed him, he just didn't bother telling me.

A timely reminder to check your accounts on a regular basis.

The scam purporting to be Amazon phoned her and tried to get her details so that they could correct a mistake in an order. Amazon or any other company would never do that, the order would be cancelled and you would need to re order.
They were very convincing because they had address and both cards details she had registered.

Pretty much like the campaign the BBC are publicizing currently

David do you mind me asking how your wife knew her account had been hacked? Did the hacker buy something using her card which she then noticed?

I would like to know this too David please.

My Amazon account was hacked years ago, now I use DH’s who has his card registered and Amazon Prime, it’s a win win for me 👍

V3ra Tue 03-Dec-24 09:35:56

Thank you petra, I've set that up.

And thank you David49 for your original warning.
I use Amazon for virtually all my shopping so I would be seriously inconvenienced without it.

Redhead56 Tue 03-Dec-24 08:20:03

Thanks for the heads up I will cancel my card details.

petra Tue 03-Dec-24 08:15:17

If you do leave your card on and you have some reservations you can use the 2 step verification.

But thank you for the warning and I’m sorry about your wife being hacked.

I’ve used Amazon for years, I do have saved cards as I have a subscription,

IMO, it’s no more or less likely to be hacked than any other site or PayPal or online banking.

I've just had a look at my Amazon payment card details.
I can remove the saved card, but I have quite a few items on repeat order/subscription and those orders need a saved card, so... 🤷

Yes, I looked then realised the same thing. Prime also needs saved card to pay.

You will still get Prime if you’ve paid a yearly subscription.

How did she get hacked?
Amazon is not a “dangerous website!”
I think everyone’s panicking without having the full facts.

There is nothing on the net about amazon having been hacked, not recently anyway.

AVG won't let me connect to Amazon (have just tried) "bcause it is a dangerous website" It seems to be on a blacklist. I'm about to try to investigate further

I changed my pasword and it now seems OK - I think AVG was being over-cautious.

I never leave a card on Amazon. On the rare occasion that I use my Amazon account (about once a year) I buy a gift card from Tesco and pay with that. It usually means that there is a small amount left on my account, but if anyone nicks it, it is not the end of the world and that small amount is all they will get.

Silvergirl Mon 02-Dec-24 16:32:27

Thank you for the heads up. I'm going into Amazon now to remove mine. I've never felt fully comfortable with it.

Thanks for the reminder - I rarely use Amazon and forgot to remove the card last week.

Sarnia Thu 28-Nov-24 13:40:57

Thank you so much for this. I have just deleted my card on Amazon. Good advice.

jusnoneed Thu 28-Nov-24 13:39:52

So much of this happening. On the rare occasion I pay for anything online I always delete the card afterwards.
