Virgin Media bill increase

Hello all.

I have just received my latest bill along with information that my bill will be going up by £15 a month from February. While I am considering what to do, I noticed the following at the bottom of the bill.

*Monthly price of Virgin Media’s main services and O2 Airtime Plan will increase each April from April 2025 by the Retail Price Index rate of inflation announced in February each year plus 3.9%. Doesn’t apply to any add-ons you may have selected, out-of-bundle charges or admin costs, which may increase separately. See virginmedia.com/prices and o2.co.uk/prices for details.

Is this on top of the £15 a month increase? Sorry, I am bit clueless sometimes when it comes to bills.

Just call them and tell them you won't be renewing. We had an email saying ours was going to more than double. I rang, said we wanted a better deal (did our research and found a much cheaper new customer price). First offer was not acceptable so I said we would go with another provider. They then offered a much better deal, which will be the same as we are paying now when the inflation increase is applied. Stick to your guns while being polite and you will get a much better deal.

As your husband is reluctant to phone up to get a better deal and the contract is in his name I would phone the company myself and negotiate. If they think your voice is very feminine for a man they wouldn’t be able to say so as that would be discrimination!!

It took me years and the fact city fibre had been installed in my street for me to leave Virgin. I got my aerial checked, bought a Manhattan recording set top box and went with the best broadband package with Vodaphone. The Manhattan box is very similar (on purpose?) to the Virgin Tivo box to operate. The savings paid for all that within 3 months. Not paying those pirates anymore is like having had a payrise !

I’m surprised no other provider has been commented on i.e. Sky.

I left Virgin because I hated having to haggle every year. I also didn’t like seeing my friends who couldn’t haggle being ripped off. I have a slower speed now but I don’t notice the difference.

I haven’t any experience of Virgin media but my son has been with them for years and tells me they regularly give notice that his package is going up by some ridiculous amount.
This is when he terminates his membership then awaits the calls/emails from them offering a better deal sometimes it’s cheaper than he was paying.

We are with BT and paying a stupid amount. Account is in DH's name and he can't face fighting his way through their bureaucracy, sigh. This is the only account he has to deal with, fortunately!

If your current plan expires in February they will put you onto a higher tariff, my DH called them and told them he was considering moving to another provider and he got a two year contract for less than we were paying. He hadn’t checked out costs with other companies, but chanced his arm and got a better price

Good morning .... Maybe this will help some of you. Do you know about these packages? They are for people who are on low income.

The price won't go up mid contract either.

MissAdventure Thu 09-Jan-25 22:46:02

They didn't offer me one, until the day before i changed.

Suddenly they found they could price match, but it was too late by then.

Our virgin renewal came up £20+ extra. I went online to find prices and phoned them. Said I wanted same as a new customer as we had been loyal customers for some years. Was offered a slightly lower price. So I said we were leaving as could get a much better deal with another well known company. I was put on hold while she went to see what she could do. We have accepted a deal which, when it goes up with the inflation increase, will be the same as we are paying now. I did complain about having to go through this rigmarole every time. Ring them. They will give you a better deal.

It’s not easy getting through to speak to a person at virgin.

I’m with them, and of course I’m now paying, my latest bill is over £77.

Just how much more can they keep raising it.
I don’t have any add one, just basic t.v., internet and of course the compulsory landline phone.
It seems such a hassle to change .
Can I be bothered? Probably not as I like the service and we have all the channels we need.

As often as they want as long as you keep paying that ridiculous sum per month.
BTW everyone who has a landline with virgin because they tell you you have to. No you don’t. We had this argument with them years ago and won.

It seems wrong that you sign a contract for something for two years and then the price gets put up in the middle.
I know all the broadband providers do this, but not utility companies. Which? has been campaigning against the rise in price mid-contract.

TakeThat7 Thu 09-Jan-25 16:31:09

Left virgin media after years of. Paying too much went to now and have saved so much wish I'd realised earlier and left virgin media a long time ago

Pippa22 Thu 09-Jan-25 16:16:32

Creciangirl, that’s a ridiculous sun to be paying for your service. I’m sure you could easily knock £40 off

Philippa111 Thu 09-Jan-25 15:50:11

As others have said. You can phone them up and say you are thinking of leaving as the price hike is too much. Generally they would rather have your custom than not and will come up with a better price.
I've done it and got them to reduce the cost.

crazygranmda Thu 09-Jan-25 15:48:45

We left VM because of their appalling customer service and ever increasing prices. I didn't find changing companies a hassle at all; it just saved us a lot of money!

I use Plusnet, I've been with them a few years now and I have never had any sort of problem with them and they were really helpful when I contacted them about something I didn't understand. They do put their prices up annually like the other providers do but they give fair warning both before the contract starts and each time it goes up. Last year theytold me it was goig up to £28.99 per year but in the same letter they stated if I wanted to change to a different tariff they could offer me one at £25.99, I changed and have noticed no change in my service at all.

KnittyNannie Thu 09-Jan-25 13:11:35

We left Virgin Media because of their very regular price rises. I got fed up with threatening to leave to get a “loyalty discount”. Shouldn’t have to do that. We’re with Zen now, and have been for three or four years. They guaranteed no price rises during the contract - and there haven’t been any. Their customer services are excellent.

Davisuz Thu 09-Jan-25 12:30:17

I left Virgin years ago or move to NOW TV. So much cheaper and more flexible!

ruthiek Thu 09-Jan-25 12:28:30

Ring them up and tell them you are thinking of leaving You usually will get something off

Grannynannywanny Wed 08-Jan-25 18:21:32

Desdemona unfortunately it’s impossible to avoid the April retail price index increase. As far as I know all networks have that in their small print.

However when it comes to your £15 a month increase the ball is in your court. They will want to hold onto your business while hoping you have no objection to the increase.

I’ve been with Virgin for years and always phone when my renewal notice arrives in November. I’ve had a generous loyalty discount for the past year paying £36 for broadband/landline/tv package/tivo recordable box. They wanted to increase it to £53 as the loyalty bonus had expired.

I selected the thinking of leaving option. I told them politely but firmly that I couldn’t afford to renew if my package price was increased and would have to take my business elsewhere. Within minutes a very helpful lady reduced it from £36 to £33 instead of increasing it to £53.

MissAdventure Wed 08-Jan-25 18:06:38

I got nowhere with the thinking of leaving option.
Just quite a rude person telling me all the other companies were "crap".
So, I left, and they were. grin

Pittcity Wed 08-Jan-25 18:01:20

When you call Virgin, select the "thinking of leaving" option.
The person who answers should be able to give you a loyalty discount. If they can't then say you need to think about it and ring back another time. Different agents can give you different offers....no idea why.
