Consumer rights

Debenhams have introduced a new option when returning goods for a refund. Refund to bank or refund to gift card.
I accidentally opted for refund to gift card, which I can’t afford to do!
They say they can’t amend, so now they will retain £124 of my money!
Can anyone advise whether I have any rights here. I feel like I have been mugged!

Go to Citizen's Advice or Age UK, or ring your local Trading Standards Officer (at your local council). They will have this information to hand and can advise you how to proceed.

Oh dear. You made a mistake and it’s very trying that it can’t be rectified, but it was your mistake.

They did offer a cash refund so I don’t really see that you have any other Consumer Rights than those that were offered to you.

I’ve got to agree with Lathyrus3. The only thing I can suggest is to spend this credit refund on whatever birthday/anniversary/wedding (or indeed any gifts you’d usually buy in other shops) from Debenhams this year.

We do not have a legal right to a refund just because we didn’t like the colour or the shape or size. Most stores give this as a good will gesture. Unfortunately many have come to assume that this is a right.
Our legal rights only extend to faulty goods or goods where the trades description is misleading.
Where stores no longer provide fitting rooms we can argue in the case of size.
The store was generous enough to offer you a refund to your bank or a credit note. Unfortunately you made the choice without thinking it through, easily done but hopefully lesson learned.
If you really are desperate for the money perhaps you could offer to sell your £124 credit note for say £112 ( a 10% discount) to a friend or family member who favours that store.
I fear many outlets will become more strict about policy as they are losing large amounts of money due to refunding and subsequently having to mark down the returned items.
Shame more isn’t done to combat shoplifting so that stores can be more generous with honest and loyal customers like yourself.

Nannygwendy you need to start a new thread for your own problem, this thread relates to the Debenhams refund.

Actually, you do have an automatic right to a refund if it is bought online, under the distance selling regulations. Debenhams no longer have physical stores as they are now part of BooHoo.

But not if you have already opted for a gift card instead.
Sorry OP but I can't see how you have any further rights here.
There is no basis for likening the trader to muggers.
You must bear the burden of your mistake.
I presume you have tried to ask nicely if they could do something else as a favour.
Can you not find something they sell that you could make use of ?

Nannygwendy
Your account is difficult to understand.
Is the vehicle being scrapped?
Why is it going to an auction site
Have you got an estimate locally for the repair work.
Would you be willing g to pay for the repair yourself.
What is the excess v repair cost.
You could try ringing LBC
Saturday or Sunday 9pm.
Preferably Sunday.
But you will need to cut to the chase much more concisely.

I suggest something like
My car was correctly parked.
Struck by another driver.
Who was arrested by police.
I am now in dispute with my insurance company.
?why
?what do you want.
