House insurance quote more than doubled from last year.

I had a claim for storm damage last year which was eventually paid.
Would this be the reason for the huge price hike or have insurance premiums gone up everywhere?
Should I cast around for another quote?

Grammaretto Sun 10-Aug-25 17:12:15

OK David I realise that but what I said was "is it fair!"

I phoned SAGA today and managed to reduce the premium by a few hundred pounds, includinga loyalty discount.
The price hike was because I made a claim. How is that fair?

It works like that with all insurance, if you make a claim they see you as a higher risk so charge more

My car insurance is due next month, I’ll be allocating time to consult the comparison sites again, it is tedious though.

I have only buildings and dog insurance. I know all insurance companies are a rip off and, in times of catastrophe or heartbreak, will do anything to avoid paying out.

What about your house hold items?

Always compare - never auto renew. Both car and home insurances have (on average) come down from last year’s high.

Thanks for your input.
I went on Money Supermarket, filled in lots of details (mostly correct AFAIK) and was given just one quote.
It is £1000 lower than SAGA which I was with, and who have more than doubled their quote, but it's with a company I have never heard of.
One Insurance Solution.
Then I noticed I was on a site called confused.com

And I am.

I may try to call SAGA, tell them I've had a lower quote and see if they will lower theirs.

Just received our renewal notice and it's also gone up. We have until the end of August so I'm now trying to get some quotes in the hope we can reduce the cost a little.

I dont understand anyone who just renews any insurance quote each year without going on a comparison website. My renewal for home insurance last year was £600. After comparison website it was £380 and it was with the same company who would not let me just renew at that price! So I cancelled the current policy and took out a new policy to get the cheaper quote. Yes Same cover same company. Crazy!

21-15 days before renewal date is the best time to get quotes, according to Martin Lewis, MSE and Money Supermarket.
I’ve just checked mine. My renewal has gone up by £80, far too much. Via MS I have a quite for one third of that. On my To Do list for today,

Shopping around is good - my renewal car insurance quote was not a great deal more than last year, but I compared other Insurance companies for like for like quotes. Found one somewhat cheaper - went back to my current insurers who, on being told I could go elsewhere for less, lowered their quote. My new car insurance is now pennies more than last year!!

I always shop around at least a month before renewal and also check cashback sites.

SpringsEternal Wed 06-Aug-25 19:56:54

Mine doubled. I wish I'd shopped around. My water bill also doubled. Groan. Sigh.

My insurance actually went down this year which astonished me because I had a big discount for last year's as a new customer. I did shop around a bit but couldn't beat it and got fed up with filling in forms for quotes.
Do be aware that if you do change insurance companies there is normally a period when some things aren't covered.

Could you say what things are not covered for a period, when you've changed insurers?

Mt61 Wed 06-Aug-25 17:08:47

Yes always shop round.

Get other quotes

I think, but can’t confirm, that you have to declare if you’ve made a previous claim when requesting quotes from other companies. In the event that there’s a central database it is possible to get caught out if not disclosing full information.

Paper says that they are on average LOWER than last year.

Do cast around - we were quoted on renewal £120 more than on Go compare from the same company. We looked further, and got it for just over half the quote, from a sister company.

They are taking the michael....

My company got in touch recently to say that they wouldn't be doing my type of contents insurance any longer and gave me a referral to another company whose quote was not much more than I paid the previous year. I'd actually left the second company a couple of years before because their quote went up dramatically! I imagine I'll get a ridiculous price hike next year though.
Personally I always check insurance prices every year as they do seem to vary so much, I suspect that they all have different dates for their annual rises.

With all insurance we should look around and get different quotes it takes time and is annoying but the various groups expect it and you get no treats for loyalty

I always use a comparison website. It takesa couple of minutes to type in my details and property details then one click and it goes to multiple insurance companies.

They then respond with competitive quotes and I pick and choose the best offer on the terms I need. Fast and simple.

In UK, all insurers share a data base of insured clients. So they all take one look at the Butterandjam pristine claims record and see that I'm the ideal client. Careful owner, security conscious. You bet they're all fighting to win and keep my custom.

The current lucky winner has guaranteed not increase my premium for three years.

gillsterry Wed 06-Aug-25 14:13:52

I agree with Blue Belle loyalty does not mean anything in this world now I shop around for most things now , home ,insurance car ,etc. anything that has to be renewed If you are a new customer you alwaysget a better deal.

pooohbear2811 Wed 06-Aug-25 14:02:49

My quote is approx 20% down on last year, no claims to impact it.

Lindylou23 Wed 06-Aug-25 13:59:27

I had a major flood, and lost everything downstairs,I was with Aviva, they were brilliant in all dealings with them. I was expecting the next year premium to increase considerably but it went up slightly l. I've had a quote again from them this year, it has gone up £18,so will be staying with them.
