Write a Will online?

Our finances are not complicated so we are considering writing a Will online. Has anyone got advice or experience of this. It seems a good option to save a visit to a Solicitor and a hefty bill.

I made my will at a solicitors. It cost me £40. How would it be witnessed on-line? I wouldn't trust it.

You’d surely just print it off, and then get your witnesses to sign and date it.

You can get a Will kit from WHSmith (or whatever it’s called now). I think £30 or £40, which is what my Dad did, as I was his sole beneficiary and he lived in a house that belonged to me. It does, however, sound as if you have a DH, so it could be more complicated with pension funds, etc.

Sometimes there’s a ‘local offer’ when Solicitors will prepare a simple will at a very reasonable price, but around here, a simple will comes in around £400. (How long have you had yours kq for £40?).
My late friend and her DH took advantage of a £99 offer from ‘somewhere’, then couldn’t track down the Solicitor or their wills later.

Have you thought about setting up PoAs yet - then a Solicitor could do everything for both of you at the same time?

Thank you. But I don't know what PoAs means smile

If it’s a straightforward mirror will between a married couple where everything is left to the other it’s not complicated but it rarely is that simple if you have a family so use a solicitor.

If you haven’t heard of PoA, with respect, there may be other important things you are unaware that you need to consider, so using a solicitor is best. They will help you to consider ‘ What if?’ situations you haven’t though of.

I'm minded of the advice GSM gave when she used to be able to post, that solicitors made far more money from sorting out badly worded wills than they did from writing them in the first place. I think it's usually in October when some solicitors do free will writing of simple wills in hope for a small bequest to the charity they're supporting. Yes March and October, I've just checked.

Thanks, I am familiar with Power of Attorney just didn't recognise that abbreviation

I made the will in 2019.

To me printing it off for signage is not writing an on-line will- it's just printing off the form which you can buy in most stationary shops.
