Any advice getting good car insurance that is not ultra expensive. It all seems to be on line now with everything done on an app.

I always ring the company to see if they’ll budge and if not go online with a comparison website. According to Martin Lewis there’s sweet spot which is about 3 weeks before your insurance is due . If you leave it close to the due date , the premiums are higher .

ExDancer, the pantomime gets a bit easier if the date comes to you rather than the other way round. When the renewal letter arrives, put an entry in the diary three or four weeks before it, not on the day, because quotes taken that far ahead usually come in lower than the ones you get the week it runs out, as David49 says. Do the same for the car tax, the MOT and the house insurance, so none of them lands in Christmas week. Then it's the comparison site, a phone call to your own insurer with the figure in hand, and you decide.

For heaven's sake renew it. I have come across the most horrendous problems trying to prove that I am who I am and that am not a money launderer.

I am trying to do a Declaration of Trust but don't have enough paperwork in my own name. Bank statements, utility bills and so on are in joint names, which do not satisfy the investigators. Ergo, I cannot employ a firm of solicitors.

Help!!!

If you have a joint account with an ordinary bank immediately open a separate account - you can do this in a few clicks online. My husband has had to do it. They know us but we had closed all but the joint account. It literally took 5 minutes or less.
He put £1 in for the solicitor to see! They were happy!
🙄😂

I would start here.
Good luck.

I agree, that is how I do it every year, snd usually find it cheaper to change insurers. You only need to fill out the information form once.

David49 Sat 10-Oct-26 13:40:22

Your existing insurer is unlikely to quote the best price, mine was about £100 less this year, the best time to get a new quote is about a month before it runs out.

I’m often a bit wary of very cheap quotes, and last year found my insurance provider to be based on Malta and with poor reviews! This year I went with the AA, which wasn’t the cheapest, but within my price range. I cannot begin to say how efficient they were, when a huge Amazon wagon took a dislike to my Mini last month. Obviously I wasn’t to blame, so confident it would be easily dealt with, but I cannot fault their service.

To be honest, my house, car and travel insurances are only once a year, which I don’t really find that difficult to manage.

Saga came up trumps for me this year.
I find it upsetting that I have to go through this pantomime every year in order not to be ripped off!
So much for loyalty!

I used a comparison site and chose Dial Direct. The cost has stayed low for the three years I have been with them. The cover includes RAC breakdown cover and is still very reasonable despite my age now being 80. The renewal has gone smoothly, but I haven't made a claim so haven't tested them.

I used an online provider. Monitors your driving by GPS I guess, via an app on your phone and gives feedback/rewards (vouchers) and reduced premiums by way of reward for good driving. Very happy with it, not least because it rates me as “excellent”, which I can show the kids 😁

Go Compare Comparison Site

My AXA renewal quote was £530 this year, was £220 last year!!! They said it was due to rising costs. Really????
I got my insurance from RAC for £280 using a price comparison site.

This is pretty much the same as me. Axa shot up this year, I tried 3 comparison sites and the RAC was the best price. Still over £40 more than last year though.

Try try One Call they have been really good. Insuring my husband’s VW van is £200 per year and he is mid 60’s.

Mine went up from last year - I also needed to take the other driver off, and it went up again so I used the comparison sites. Found another insurance company considerably cheaper - went back to my insurers to see if they would match it - no go so after many years with them I changed to the other company saving quite a lot.

posset Thu 10-Sept-26 19:07:23

I read that generally car insurance is down by about 5% from last year. I strongly recommend using a comparison site. Our camper van insurance quotes varied from £385 to over £1000 - all for much the same cover!

grannysyb Thu 10-Sept-26 18:57:45

I'm with NFU and mine went down this year!

ClicketyClick Thu 10-Sept-26 16:43:54

I always use comparison sites and this year's was just over £200 cheaper with Budget Insurance than quoted for renewal with last insurer.
Also after getting the cheapest quote, I always check to see if I can get a discount for it that I surer on the top cashback website and managed to get £50 cashback from there. I always check top cashback for any deals before buying anything online.

rosemary55 Thu 10-Sept-26 16:30:20

Saga has always been the best for me , and they keep the price the same for 3 years, even after the 3 years I thought it would go up loads, but it didn't, so here's to another 3 years knowing the cost

62Granny Thu 10-Sept-26 16:30:05

Have you tried Tesco? We have a mobility car now so it is all sorted, but I used to use them and you get Clubcard points too.
Motorbility use Direct Line and I have found them helpful when I had a bump earlier in the year. Has yours gone up because you have had a milestone birthday?

ElaineI Thu 10-Sept-26 16:21:32

I've been with direct line for years. This year the site was totally blank, then I discovered DL has/is being taken over by Aviva. Eventually got a quote for over £800 for a Mazda 2! Not even going to argue that down! Have gone with Brittania for £350. Also all my banks seem to be getting taken over and accounts changing! It's difficult keeping track and they all want you to have apps on a mobile. I don't mind the apps but if I'm doing my banking I prefer a larger screen with all the details.

monami Thu 10-Sept-26 15:55:02

insurance, direct line

Cabbie21 Thu 10-Sept-26 15:36:10

I guess a significant birthday has pushed my price up.

Lupatria Thu 10-Sept-26 15:28:35

my car is insured by tesco and i've always been satisfied with the cost.
however they wanted almost double what i paid last year at renewal.
so I got on the phone and after a conversation the renewal price was brought down to just a little more than last year and i'm more than happy with it.

Foxyferret Thu 10-Sept-26 14:52:14

Saga have been pretty reasonable for me. I always phone when I get my renewal (not just the Saga company) and the majority of the time they get me a price cheaper than the renewal. I always say I have found it cheaper online and the price comes down as they don’t want to lose you.
