Greenmossgiel Wow - we live on the No Through Road up the side of the Green. Yes, all the houses on Distillery Street are still there - we walk past them every day. Hubby taught at the Boys' school on the Green and I taught at the Girls' school opposite the church. What a small world. Revis - that's amazing!! I was born at Widdowson's Row (off Easthorpe Street), then when I was 4 we moved to Distillery Street. We lived in a white house quite near The Green! Asher Lane ran parallel with our back garden! is our old house still there?

hello Greenmossgiel Would you believe we live in Ruddington! I was born in London, came up to Nottingham College of Ed in 1965 and have been here ever since. Love the village and we are half way between our 2 children so looks as though we will be here for a bit yet. Nice to talk to you.

Revis - I was born in Ruddington, 6 miles or so away from Nottingham (well, in 1950 it was!) Came up to Fife when I was 10 then back down again a good few years later. Two of my children were born in Nottingham, one in the (not very nice at the time) Meadows area, and one in New Basford. Came back up to Fife in 1976.

MMMM Crimson, I feel the same, but I think it is a little different if you live there. My sis has a theory that they like to see people leaving (emigrating - fine more resources left for the rest of us) and not so happy to see people arriving.
She also finds that she has little in common with most people in their 50s and 60s because they grew up at a time when the Church was still very dominant.
One thing is for sure though, the country is well and truly in the poo now which makes it difficult for people to move if they want to.

On Nannyto1; please talk to me about Ireland....we went there every year for several years..Punchestown Festival then over to the West Coast. The Burren, Roundstone [what a little gem of a place], Dingle [with Fungi the dolphin]. My favourite pub, the Tir Na Nog. Too expensive to go back at the moment, but I can close my eyes and be there. Such warmth and hospitality. [sigh].

Hi Nannyto1 - my sister too lives in Ireland in the country and finds life lonely. It was more of a culture change than she bargained for I think. What county are you in?

Hi - I am new to the site - but must say its really good - easy to use and lots of interesting things.

I moved from UK to Ireland almost 4 years ago - I do find it pretty lonely as we lived in town in the Uk - but here we are living in the middle of the countryside. My nearest shop is 2 miles away - and our nearest bank and shopping centre is 25 miles away. So need a car for everything.

Don't get me wrong we have a lovely house - lots of space - but I don't see anyone from day to day except my husband. My daughter lives about 15 minutes away so that keeps me going.

We moved just at the wrong time, prices of house were at their highest and the recession started to hit. So from having a really good job in the UK I have only had a couple of temporary jobs here - and at the moment there just isn't anything out there.

What I miss about the UK is my youngest daughter, my friends, my job and the freedom that was on my doorstep.

What i like about living here is the lovely house we have, our and the fact that my eldest daughter and granddaughter just live a short trip away. And of course our beautiful dog that we rescued 4 years ago - which we wouldn't have had if we still were in the uk.

I think social networking is just the best and have found it a life saver since being here.

I have lived in Bedfordshire for the last 35 years, but grew up in Surrey. We have a small second home in the South of France where we spend several weeks during the summer (there as I write this!). One day, when France is no longer practical, I hope we will settle for a small place in either Devon or Cornwall as I love them both.

Yes nannym I do go to the designer outlet sometimes. Quite like Roman Originals, Marks and Spencer's outlet and Famous Footwear.

I'm new here. I have fetched up in Worcester (England) but like some others my father was in the forces so I happened to be born in Germany - on British territory tho'. I spent my secondary education years in Carshalton Surrey. moved to Leeds for Uni and stayed a few years, then to Cheltenham and I've been here 20 years but I feel I have no roots and don't belong anywhere. Reading where everyone else is has left me feeling dislocated and unsatisfied again. I'd move, but I can't decide where to go!! Does anyone share a sense of rootlessness?

I am in Appleton Thorn, Cheshire, but possibly moving to Hartley Wintney in Hampshire next year. Does anybody live near either of those places?
