Testing the water for a "Northern mini-national"

There was talk of a National meetup a little while ago, but nothing concrete seems to have happened about it. There was a lot of general interest then, but how many people are still interested and would come to an all-day meeting in Edinburgh in November/December? If there are enough to make it worth the effort of organising it, I shall make a detailed plan and agenda and take serious names.

Central Edinburgh is a magical place around Christmas, so a meeting at a date from the end of November would be good (St Andrews Day is the 30th November, highly suitable, and the decorations and entertainments in Princes St Gardens open just before that) Time for gift shopping could be built in.

Here is a possible scenario - a meeting room overlooking the castle booked for the day from 9 to 5, with three tea/coffee/cake/biscuit breaks, a buffet lunch, and a couple of talks on relevant subjects, plus time for limitless socialising and retail therapy on Princes St. This would cost, at a very vague reckoning, about £25 a head plus £7.50 each for lunch. A bit of negotiation might bring it down, but that is a conjecture, so is a spot of fundraising of some kind to offset the cost. (GN have indicated that they are not able to offer any funding) Other places might be cheaper or dearer, but this is somewhere that we know does a good lunch and afternoon tea and has a nice atmosphere. There is a lift. There would be room for up to 40.

There are usually travel deals on at that time of year. There are a lot of hotels/B&Bs etc in Edinburgh, (lists are available from the information centre), and we might get a bulk rate if several people want to stay over in the the same place.

I don't know yet whether this will be viable, so there is no guarantee that it will happen, but it could be a very enjoyable day. If you are interested enough to be counted in provisionally, please pm me.

Kinloch Anderson is THE place for kilts and pleated skirts, but they are down in Leith. Not the cheapest prices, but the quality is excellent. See their website at www.kinlochanderson.com/ skirts are at
www.kinlochanderson.com/womens/clothing/tartan-skirts

John Lewis is another place. It is in the St James Centre, at the East end of Princes Street. However, my search on their site did not show any tartan pleated skirts.

Romanes and Paterson, 62 Princes Street, is another. They are now part of the Edinburgh Woollen Mill chain. www.ewm.co.uk/store-finder/index/storeDetail/id/70/

They do have tartan pleated skirts www.ewm.co.uk/catalogsearch/result/?q=pleated+tartan+skirt

The ones in Debenham's are just pelmets.

Count me in, please, Elegran.
Nov 30 is good for me too.
All the best....smile

Elegran Sat 26-Oct-13 13:14:38

GeminiJem The 30th November was first choice, when the idea was first proposed, but that date was filled, so we have taken Sunday 1st December instead. If you can make that day, let me know by private message and I will send you all the details about venue, times, cost etc.

Be warned - if you are coming far by train, the Sunday service is terrible. Several people are booked into rooms at the venue, but Idon't know whether they still have spaces. however there are plenty of hotels and B&Bs in Edinburgh.

By car I would recommend one of the Park and Ride carparks on the edge of town. The tram works are finished (so they say!) and Princes Street is back in use for taxis buses and bicycles, but not for private cars.

Skype group call.

Someone suggested that those who wanted to join us but could not get here could be in touch via Skype. One possibility with this, as well as just saying hello to those who are there, is that by aiming the laptop camera at the intrepid souls who are going to stand up and tell us about their interests we can let others see/here as well.

I have had a look at Skype, and up to 25 people can be in a "group call". If more than that want to be connected, we will have to consider having more than one laptop, and a second group call.

If you have Skype, it looks very simple (where have I heard that before?) Here is the page about it on Skype support - https://support.skype.com/en/faq/FA2831/making-a-group-call-windows-desktop

Signing up to Skype is also very simple. You are asked your date of birth as a security question, but there is no need to tell the truth , they won't be checking up! Just remember what you claimed in case you need it.

If you would like to be in the group of 25 (24, to be truthful, since one of them has to be me) then send me a PM with your Skype username on and we can get connected and do a trial run before the day.

Have now had all but one of your deposits for the meeting on December 1st. I won't embarrass the forgetful one by naming names, but could you all check that you have had an email acknowledgment from me? If not, perhaps it is you!

Marelli Fri 01-Nov-13 13:19:22

I did mine by PayPal, Elegran.....it's not me, is it? I'm sure you received it, but it was at the very beginning.

Galen Fri 01-Nov-13 13:31:16

Galen Fri 01-Nov-13 13:32:10

Really looking forward to it! (Thinks. Now which set of pearls do I wear?)hmm

Marelli Fri 01-Nov-13 13:36:45

I've looked out my gownless evening strap, Galen. It does reek a bit of mothballs though....grin!

Galen Fri 01-Nov-13 13:42:09

Do I need snowshoes and crampons up there?

Gally Fri 01-Nov-13 14:26:48

Elegran Fri 01-Nov-13 15:22:27

We will now be 18 or maybe 19. Just learnt that Lara Gransnet will be there and possibly Cari!

glassortwo Fri 01-Nov-13 15:32:02

Dont know how layers and stout foot wear will look with galens pearls wink if this is the standard of dress I need to go and recheck my wardrobe I dont do dressy up...help
I am looking forward to seeing everyone and all the new faces, cant wait.

Elegran Fri 01-Nov-13 15:41:38

At least Galen will have a bedroom at the venue to nip up to and remove the layers once she is indoors. Those of us who will be trekking through the snowdrifts with our furs and dog sleighs will have to stow our extra garments under the table (hope they have a nice long tablecloth to conceal it all under. There will also be all the C*******s shopping that has been bought and will have to be stored somewhere.)

All of you are very welcome to use my room! ( I'll remove the diamonds and emeralds first!)
Are those of us overnighting meeting for a meal on either night?
I'm happy to pay for any sharing of taxis as I would need one anyway.

Ps. I don't own a single emerald. But if you find any in my room , they must be mine!

moomin Sat 09-Nov-13 23:13:04

I think a meal together for those of us staying on Saturday night is on Galen, glass did some research on places to eat earlier in the thread.

Galen Sat 09-Nov-13 23:33:54

Great. I just don't want to eat on my own

Galen Sat 09-Nov-13 23:34:18

I'm to bed now! moon

glassortwo Thu 14-Nov-13 09:29:24

I have emailled all the restaurants on the previous post to see what access is like for galen (not to many steps) I have had some replies and just awaiting the rest, I will wait until tomorrow then I think we need to go ahead and get it booked.
I will post the final list for you all to have a look at then we can decide where to go.

If anyone knows of somewhere good to eat in Edinburgh we would appreciate the tip off.

moomin Thu 14-Nov-13 16:43:40

Thanks glass I agree, we need to get it booked soon
