Testing the water for a "Northern mini-national"

There was talk of a National meetup a little while ago, but nothing concrete seems to have happened about it. There was a lot of general interest then, but how many people are still interested and would come to an all-day meeting in Edinburgh in November/December? If there are enough to make it worth the effort of organising it, I shall make a detailed plan and agenda and take serious names.

Central Edinburgh is a magical place around Christmas, so a meeting at a date from the end of November would be good (St Andrews Day is the 30th November, highly suitable, and the decorations and entertainments in Princes St Gardens open just before that) Time for gift shopping could be built in.

Here is a possible scenario - a meeting room overlooking the castle booked for the day from 9 to 5, with three tea/coffee/cake/biscuit breaks, a buffet lunch, and a couple of talks on relevant subjects, plus time for limitless socialising and retail therapy on Princes St. This would cost, at a very vague reckoning, about £25 a head plus £7.50 each for lunch. A bit of negotiation might bring it down, but that is a conjecture, so is a spot of fundraising of some kind to offset the cost. (GN have indicated that they are not able to offer any funding) Other places might be cheaper or dearer, but this is somewhere that we know does a good lunch and afternoon tea and has a nice atmosphere. There is a lift. There would be room for up to 40.

There are usually travel deals on at that time of year. There are a lot of hotels/B&Bs etc in Edinburgh, (lists are available from the information centre), and we might get a bulk rate if several people want to stay over in the the same place.

I don't know yet whether this will be viable, so there is no guarantee that it will happen, but it could be a very enjoyable day. If you are interested enough to be counted in provisionally, please pm me.

Great. Thanks!

really looking forward to seeing you all. Who else is staying Saturday night and have they any ideas for dinner?

Marelli Tue 22-Oct-13 21:22:27

gillybob and glass are staying on the Saturday night, Galen, and I'm pretty sure some others are, too. Not sure who they are though. I'm so looking forward to meeting up with everyone. smile

Elegran Tue 22-Oct-13 21:31:36

Pittcity and Mr P, Gillybob, Glassortwo and Galen will be there on Saturday night. I hope they are still fit to attend on Sunday.

Stansgran Tue 22-Oct-13 21:33:27

It's over a year since I've been to Edinburgh buti Galen if you take a taxi to your hotel, drop off your luggage and keep the taxi if you like the driver and get him to take you to the art gallery or holyroodhouse . Keep you busy all morning, good food in the cafe and reasonably wheelchair friendly. Really nice people in tartan.

moomin Tue 22-Oct-13 21:33:53

I will be staying on Saturday night at ROSL arriving on same train as glass and gillybob

Elegran Tue 22-Oct-13 21:48:01

How could we miss your name out, Moomin? Sorry.

That is six. Something tells me that the ROSL doesn't know what is about to hit it.

You do all know that you can book lunch and/or dinner and/or afternoon tea there if you want, don't you? People can't walk in without booking though (I think they like to have some idea of numbers) On the Saturday night there is a big St Andrew's Night dinner on, so maybe the diningroom will be full - I don't know.

A friend of mine will be in the Robert Louis Stevenson Room for lunch on Saturday with a gang of ex-colleagues, so please excuse any hilarity you may hear coming from there. They are all very douce ladies at other times.

Galen Tue 22-Oct-13 22:06:04

I'll be on crutches. No wheelchair, so can't walk far.

Elegran Tue 22-Oct-13 22:11:54

Can't you take the one that fits into the suitcase?

Elegran Tue 22-Oct-13 22:15:29

I wonder whether you could hire one in Edinburgh for a couple of days?

Marelli Tue 22-Oct-13 22:21:27

I'm pretty sure Galen could hire one for a short time. What about Googling one of the mobility shops in Edinburgh, to see if they hire out? If you're going to be getting a taxi, Galen, you could pick the wheelchair up on the way to the hotel?

Elegran Tue 22-Oct-13 22:23:51

I have googled and found this place that hires out scooters. http://www.glenmoremobility.com/hire/ There are probably others.

Elegran Tue 22-Oct-13 22:24:26

Should have blued it. www.glenmoremobility.com/hire/

moomin Wed 23-Oct-13 16:30:04

Suggestions on a postcard please thlsmile

Tegan Wed 23-Oct-13 16:33:35

I got in terrible trouble at work for having a voodoo doll in my drawer and sticking pins in it; not sure who was annoying me at the time blush. I must point out I was very young at the time.

Marelli Wed 23-Oct-13 16:51:38

Did it work though, Tegan - that's the important thing?!! thlgrin

Galen Wed 23-Oct-13 17:10:37

Voodoo and temp us sound nice. So long as there aren't a lot of steps I'll manage!

Tegan Wed 23-Oct-13 17:28:11

It was so long ago I can't remember. I think it was to do with this horrible old lady we worked with [I bet she was all of 40]. We also used to have Sooty and Sweep hand puppets and used to sit at our desk with them on our hands. Is it any wonder they privatised British Rail?

Galen Wed 23-Oct-13 17:29:03

I will probably spend the day in retail therapy. I really -- want-- a long tartan kilt type skirt and blouse and jacket. Thought I might get something at jenners. Or any other suggestions?

Galen Wed 23-Oct-13 17:29:24

That should be need!
