Testing the water for a "Northern mini-national"

There was talk of a National meetup a little while ago, but nothing concrete seems to have happened about it. There was a lot of general interest then, but how many people are still interested and would come to an all-day meeting in Edinburgh in November/December? If there are enough to make it worth the effort of organising it, I shall make a detailed plan and agenda and take serious names.

Central Edinburgh is a magical place around Christmas, so a meeting at a date from the end of November would be good (St Andrews Day is the 30th November, highly suitable, and the decorations and entertainments in Princes St Gardens open just before that) Time for gift shopping could be built in.

Here is a possible scenario - a meeting room overlooking the castle booked for the day from 9 to 5, with three tea/coffee/cake/biscuit breaks, a buffet lunch, and a couple of talks on relevant subjects, plus time for limitless socialising and retail therapy on Princes St. This would cost, at a very vague reckoning, about £25 a head plus £7.50 each for lunch. A bit of negotiation might bring it down, but that is a conjecture, so is a spot of fundraising of some kind to offset the cost. (GN have indicated that they are not able to offer any funding) Other places might be cheaper or dearer, but this is somewhere that we know does a good lunch and afternoon tea and has a nice atmosphere. There is a lift. There would be room for up to 40.

There are usually travel deals on at that time of year. There are a lot of hotels/B&Bs etc in Edinburgh, (lists are available from the information centre), and we might get a bulk rate if several people want to stay over in the the same place.

I don't know yet whether this will be viable, so there is no guarantee that it will happen, but it could be a very enjoyable day. If you are interested enough to be counted in provisionally, please pm me.

I've just phoned my brother who lives outside Perth. We are going to try to meet up for lunch as I arrive at 8am on the Sat.

Elegran Tue 26-Nov-13 19:53:06

That sounds a good move, Galen

If I had realised you would be on your own all day I would have joined you at some point, but it is a good chance to see your brother.

Galen Tue 26-Nov-13 20:51:25

Don't know if it can be done yet. I'm going to try to hire scooter for part of the day anyway. Then I want to look at the German market. (Although bro says not nearly as good as the Birmingham one!)

There is a Shopmobility centre (free) on Waterloo Place. I wonder if they would deliver it to the hotel?

Doesn't look as though they will deliver it. Waterloo Place is at the East End of Princes Street - it is almost a continuation of Princes street. A bus would take you from just about the door of the ROSL along to that end of Princes Street, and possibly along Waterloo Place. i shall look at bus routes and see.

There are places listed on Google that will hire you one but at a price - like £25 a day plus £40 to deliver and collect. Gulp.

Elegran Tue 26-Nov-13 21:24:53

Looks like a 113, X26 and X44 go from near the ROSL to Waterloo Place. You need £1.50 in your hand - they don't give change. But they are easy-access for disabled - see lothianbuses.com/our-community/community/accessible-buses.

I'm getting a taxi from the airport. I shall have a breakfast at the airport first. If I can book a scooter I'll get the taxi to drop me at the mobility place. When I drop it back I'll get a taxi to the hotel! Simples! This is what my mobility allowance is for!smile

Galen Tue 26-Nov-13 21:35:09

Don't worry about me! Remember I'm an experienced solo disabled traveller. It's only Heathrow that defeats me!

Elegran Tue 26-Nov-13 21:46:57

Edinburgh is much better than Heathrow.

From what I hear, almost anywhere is much better than Heathrow.

Galen Tue 26-Nov-13 21:52:08

Never had problems at Edinburgh in the past, except one occasion when it was too windy to use the hi- lift, to get me on board on the plane. Two poor blokes had to carry me up the steps in an evac chair! I think next time, I'll struggle up on my own!

This is getting better and better. I'm now meeting up with some internet racing chums at Kelso the following Sunday grin. If only I could take in The Fighting Fifth at Newcastle but I'll be travelling that day sad.

Happy Christmas everyone!

GeminiJen Fri 29-Nov-13 14:59:44

Dear Elegran
Am I too late to take part?
I'm a newbie, saw your original message then couldn't find it again....Sorry!
No problem if I am too late.....Hopefully next time...
In the meantime, enjoy!
Jennifer.

Elegran Fri 29-Nov-13 15:12:44

GeminiJen It is not too late. I shall PM you with the details. The more the merrier!

Charleygirl Fri 29-Nov-13 15:26:40

I hope that you all have a superb time and please do not get thrown out of hotels because of your rowdiness. Hotel bars will be thinking that Christmas has come early. I am Scottish and worked in Edinburgh for a couple of years in my youth.

No doubt we will hear all about it later.

Nelliemoser Fri 29-Nov-13 15:34:51

Enjoy yourselves. I would love to be there, or just a fly on the wall. I could take pictures and blackmail you all later. grin wine cupcake wine wine

Charleygirl Fri 29-Nov-13 15:53:47

Nelliemoser money would not have to enter your head ever again! It would be worth it!!!

YaYaJen Sat 30-Nov-13 13:20:33

Have a fab time, have a glass or three for me stuck home with sinusitis..

Elegran Sat 30-Nov-13 13:29:04

I'll have you know that this is a cultural event, no blackmailing will be possible! We have a conference room, we are each paying a "delegate rate" for the day, we have a projector and a screen and a wi-fi connection. We will be hearing from GN members about their hobbies (and hobby horses) and from a couple of other speakers. We will be served tea and coffee and cakes and biscuits, and a finger buffet lunch. Cari is coming from HQ to make sure we behave ourselves.

Who do you think we are, Mumsnetters?

Elegran Sat 30-Nov-13 13:30:00

But you will be getting pictures, so you can check for yourselves.

Agus Sat 30-Nov-13 13:37:21

Sounds as if you are all going to have a great time. I can feel the excitement rising already. Have a wonderful get together everyone.

Marelli Sat 30-Nov-13 13:37:41

However, there WILL be much sniggering, nevertheless grin!

Charleygirl Sat 30-Nov-13 16:38:19

I am so jealous that I cannot be there. I am pleased to hear that Cari is going to keep you lot in order. Enjoy!

Pittcity Sat 30-Nov-13 19:35:26

I am here in Edinburgh and looking forward to tomorrow having spent today with the crowds in this marvelous city... PS the weather's better than Colchester.
