Meet ups/where are you?

Testing the water for a "Northern mini-national"

There was talk of a National meetup a little while ago, but nothing concrete seems to have happened about it. There was a lot of general interest then, but how many people are still interested and would come to an all-day meeting in Edinburgh in November/December? If there are enough to make it worth the effort of organising it, I shall make a detailed plan and agenda and take serious names.

Central Edinburgh is a magical place around Christmas, so a meeting at a date from the end of November would be good (St Andrews Day is the 30th November, highly suitable, and the decorations and entertainments in Princes St Gardens open just before that) Time for gift shopping could be built in.

Here is a possible scenario - a meeting room overlooking the castle booked for the day from 9 to 5, with three tea/coffee/cake/biscuit breaks, a buffet lunch, and a couple of talks on relevant subjects, plus time for limitless socialising and retail therapy on Princes St. This would cost, at a very vague reckoning, about £25 a head plus £7.50 each for lunch. A bit of negotiation might bring it down, but that is a conjecture, so is a spot of fundraising of some kind to offset the cost. (GN have indicated that they are not able to offer any funding) Other places might be cheaper or dearer, but this is somewhere that we know does a good lunch and afternoon tea and has a nice atmosphere. There is a lift. There would be room for up to 40.

There are usually travel deals on at that time of year. There are a lot of hotels/B&Bs etc in Edinburgh, (lists are available from the information centre), and we might get a bulk rate if several people want to stay over in the the same place.

I don't know yet whether this will be viable, so there is no guarantee that it will happen, but it could be a very enjoyable day. If you are interested enough to be counted in provisionally, please pm me.

I had to leave early to get my train back to Newcastle, but the five hours I was there in the company of the other GNers just flew by!
Lovely lunch, interesting talks on Badgers, Genealogy, the Children's Hospice movement in Scotland, and fiery debate following Granny23's presentation on Scottish Independence!
Lovely to see Marelli, Thatbags, Gillybob, Glassortwo, Baubles, Granny23 Moomin and Elegran again, and to meet GillieB, Galen and Tegan for the first time, not forgetting Carismile Hope I haven't missed anyone out and sorry not to have had time to talk to everyone else !
A big big Thank you to Elegran for organising a really special day - thank you so much! flowers

Well done Elegran

Elegran Sun 01-Dec-13 20:54:02

I am sitting around doing not-a-lot (B all) as for some reason I fell unaccountably tired. Can't think why!

Glad everyone enjoyed themselves. I had too much planned, of course, and not all of it happened, but there is always next time (What excuse can we come up with next?)

thatbags Sun 01-Dec-13 21:01:40

Great day - brilliant organisation by Elegran and so so lovely to meet so many people in one go. Everyone was VERY well behaved - not a single conversation had to be reported or deleted grin

The sunshine even shone for us - and obviously there was cupcake for lunch. Was extremely sorry to miss the end to wend my weary way back to GHNQ. Hey - we will just have to do it all again

xx

moomin Sun 01-Dec-13 22:34:09

A great get-together Elegran, thank you for all your hard work flowers. Lovely to meet GNers old and new, can't wait until the next meetup!

Elegran Sun 01-Dec-13 23:18:24

I've just found the packet of glowsticks you were all supposed to get to wear going home in buses/trains. What can I do now with twenty glowsticks? (answers on a postcard please)

Granny23 Sun 01-Dec-13 23:35:57

Just heard from my sister that there was £38.75 in her CHAS collecting tin. She thanks everyone who was in Edinburgh today for their interest and generosity. This 'Donation from Gransnetters' will be winging its way to CHAS tomorrow. smile

Thank you to Elegran for arranging our fab day out and to all those interesting people I met yesterday - some I knew and some I had only just met for the first time. Its amazing how friends are made after each of these meet ups. Conversation and talks were varied and interesting even although I had thought I was eating crunchy mushrooms only to be told they were chestnuts. (Must get out more often.) thanks Marelli. Have a fab christmas everyone, here's to the next meet up. wine

CariGransnet (GNHQ) Mon 02-Dec-13 07:55:27

How good were the crunchy mushrooms though?!

thatbags Mon 02-Dec-13 08:50:19

A new gransnettism! "Crunchy mushrooms" grin grin grin Chestnuts will always be crunchy mushrooms to me now.
(I thought they were mushrooms too until I cut into one).

Gally Mon 02-Dec-13 09:11:39

On which thread can I find the photo of Bags laughing? And others!

Marelli Mon 02-Dec-13 09:22:17

Elegran, thank you so much for yesterday! The work you put into it all was amazing, and the only regret I had was that Elizabeth1 and I had to leave before the end to catch a bus that didn't arrive - though maybe it did, but Princes St was so crowded we maybe just couldn't find the stop! Made our way to the station and piled onto a train (a bit like the Japanese - got squeezed in somehow)! It was lovely to meet Gransnetters from far and near.
And I loved the chestnuts! grin
