Meet ups/where are you?

Testing the water for a "Northern mini-national"

There was talk of a National meetup a little while ago, but nothing concrete seems to have happened about it. There was a lot of general interest then, but how many people are still interested and would come to an all-day meeting in Edinburgh in November/December? If there are enough to make it worth the effort of organising it, I shall make a detailed plan and agenda and take serious names.

Central Edinburgh is a magical place around Christmas, so a meeting at a date from the end of November would be good (St Andrews Day is the 30th November, highly suitable, and the decorations and entertainments in Princes St Gardens open just before that) Time for gift shopping could be built in.

Here is a possible scenario - a meeting room overlooking the castle booked for the day from 9 to 5, with three tea/coffee/cake/biscuit breaks, a buffet lunch, and a couple of talks on relevant subjects, plus time for limitless socialising and retail therapy on Princes St. This would cost, at a very vague reckoning, about £25 a head plus £7.50 each for lunch. A bit of negotiation might bring it down, but that is a conjecture, so is a spot of fundraising of some kind to offset the cost. (GN have indicated that they are not able to offer any funding) Other places might be cheaper or dearer, but this is somewhere that we know does a good lunch and afternoon tea and has a nice atmosphere. There is a lift. There would be room for up to 40.

There are usually travel deals on at that time of year. There are a lot of hotels/B&Bs etc in Edinburgh, (lists are available from the information centre), and we might get a bulk rate if several people want to stay over in the the same place.

I don't know yet whether this will be viable, so there is no guarantee that it will happen, but it could be a very enjoyable day. If you are interested enough to be counted in provisionally, please pm me.

gally, here

annodomini Mon 02-Dec-13 10:15:54

I can see the beginnings of a national meet-up. Manchester, anyone?

Oldgreymare Mon 02-Dec-13 10:17:01

Oh Yes!!!!

glassortwo Mon 02-Dec-13 10:40:10

Thank you elegran for all your hardwork you had organised lots to keep us busy, I enjoyed the singing. It was fantastic meeting all the old and new gransnetters and of course cari. It was a nice start to the Christmas festivities.

glassortwo Mon 02-Dec-13 11:16:16

I thought I had better tell you all that I had my trousers on backside forewards all day yesterday didnt notice until I got home and stripped off for the shower.

No wonder I was meeting myself coming backwards all day grin

janeainsworth Mon 02-Dec-13 11:38:14

Glass well at least you didn't have them inside out as wellgrin

GillieB Mon 02-Dec-13 11:38:40

Thank you from me, too, Elegran - we had a lovely day and really enjoyed renewing friendships. One sad thing, though, I lost from "gold" butterfly brooch somewhere, possibly in the venue as it's the only place I went which was carpeted, and I would have thought I would have heard it fall elsewhere. It's a Joan Rivers thing, covered in lots of fake stones and I really loved it so if anyone knows where it is, I would be grateful if they could let me know. I could, of course, have lost it anywhere, but I am trying to be optimistic.

Just off out for lunch, so I will have to look at the photos when I get home.

Elegran Mon 02-Dec-13 11:44:23

Its OK. It was found and I have it here. I was going to ask who had lost it. It had to be one of us. PM me your address and I will send it to you.

GillieB Mon 02-Dec-13 19:34:44

That's great, Elegran. Have Pmed you my address.

Thanks.

Gill

Thats a really nice little spin off, of your outing. Lost and found!!
What a lovely "alls well that ends well" story smile

Granny23 Mon 02-Dec-13 20:51:33

I too left something behind - my scarf. It was found by Baubles who jaloused it was mine, PMed and is posting it on to me. Ain't Gransnet wonderful grin

thatbags Mon 02-Dec-13 20:54:40

Pleasing stories to round off a pleasing get-together smile

Elegran Mon 02-Dec-13 21:04:16

Granny23 You also left a canvas bag, just the right size for carrying a plant display in. I used it to carry mine home in, and I have it here (the bag) I shall send it to you if you PM me your address.

The plants are on the hearth beside the electric fire. If it gets cold enough to switch it on I shall move them out. Thank you very much, I appreciate it (though I did curse it a bit when I had that in one hand and my laptop in the other and I was trying to get my bus pass out of my back trouser pocket)

Elegran Mon 02-Dec-13 21:04:48

They say that if you leave something behind you are sure to come back.

Granny23 Mon 02-Dec-13 22:03:20

As I surely will smile The canvas bag came free with Pavers shoes, so please just accept that it came free with your plants. It did cross my mind about transporting the plant display home but I was expecting you to still have arm in a sling and therefore have arranged a lift or taxi for all your bits and bobs. Big sister & I drove in and out of Edinburgh through Corstorphine, i.e. practically past your door, but I know only too well what independent minded women are like - I have a family full of them.

Was wondering if anyone found any missing marbles? as I seem to have lost a few more yesterday grin

Galen Mon 02-Dec-13 22:13:48

Probably cavorting with mine! I couldn't find my chequebook and was in the middle of reporting it missing when I found it!
I'd looked on the table at least 3 times and couldn't find it!
Time for bed I think.

Elegran Tue 03-Dec-13 09:48:28

Thank you G23 It is a nice strong bag and will come in handy.
I was expecting to be still in sling but I jettisoned it as soon as Icould - more trouble than it was worth. Then, of course, because I could move pretty freely I just did more and more. I must have been playing it the right way because at physio they sent me home without even any exercises.

No marbles rolling round the floor at ROSL, just a scarf and bag, a butterfly brooch, a little gold button, and all my paperwork bits and pieces, including a cheque or two.

Thanks to everyone who came and made it enjoyable, and apologies to those (many) who were expecting to stand up and address the company but were squeezed out by time - even Cari had to leave before she could get a word in edgeways. At the next one there will be fewer things planned, and it will start at 7 am, whether anyone is there or not.

Granny23 Tue 03-Dec-13 15:05:24

Perhaps Cari and anyone else who missed their chance, could post their 'talks' on here. I remember being tempted to do just that when our Burns supper was cut short by heavy snow but decided that the written version was too dry - needed to be heard not just seen. I've kept it, in hopes of a 2014 re-run. smile

Elegran Tue 03-Dec-13 15:26:49

If I get a facebook page going on the meetup, would they post on there? I could put links to the beaver trial site, and someone who took one of Irene's genealogy sheets could copy that on.

Then it would just take a link to the Facebook page to see it all.

But just remembered that G23 is not on Facebook, so we would miss yours. Must be some way of getting that shown, I did like the analogy of the country estate with the big hoose. Can we persuade you to join FB? You don't need to put your every move and passing thought on it.

I wasn't going to talk as such (though I was going to tell you about how I decided to buy my husband a wireless speaker for Christmas as a surprise. At least a surprise until my brother (who I had asked for advice on what to get) skyped us from America on Saturday and asked "any decisions on speakers?" DH right next to me confused

I managed to "accidentally" cut him off and text him before reconnecting and getting into a ridiculous conversation about speakers for Sunday and how I had been asked to say something but wasn't sure if I would because there was already such a great line up of SPEAKERS and I'm not sure about being a SPEAKER but I had asked brother for advice because he is a very good SPEAKER.

If DH hasn't worked it out by now it will be a miracle. Meanwhile he thinks I have totally lost the plot. (True)

Otherwise I was going to talk a wee bit (free form) about Gransnet and gransnetters and then see if anyone had any questions they wanted to ask.

We can easily do that at a later date though. The speakers who did speak (see - plot...losing) were all excellent and I was much happier to listen grin

thatbags Tue 03-Dec-13 21:34:34

cari grin. Likewise except for the bit about wireless speakers and husbands' christmas presents.

Which takes me to something I just read in Half the Kingdom (Lore Segal) about someone not wanting music in his mushroom omelette. I understand that perfectly.

Elegran Tue 03-Dec-13 21:43:32

cari Talking of talks which did not happen - I have just heard that one in three older people miss out because they don't know what they are entitled to and don't know how to claim it.

Galen was going to talk on just that on Sunday, but got timed out, even the abbreviated version which would have been mostly "I have lots more information if you PM me"

Would it be an idea to ask her to write on the subject for Gransnet, if she is willing? We have so many experts inhouse on so many subjects, who could contribute to the site.

CariGransnet (GNHQ) Tue 03-Dec-13 21:45:20

Absolutely - would love that. Great idea

Galen Tue 03-Dec-13 22:05:04

Errrr!hmm I'm happy talking! not typing.
I was going to talk about AA65+ which is the non means tested tax free allowance for disabled people over the age of 65.

Elegran Tue 03-Dec-13 22:14:27

Didn't mean to volunteer you into it willy-nilly, Galen!
