Testing the water for a "Northern mini-national"

There was talk of a National meetup a little while ago, but nothing concrete seems to have happened about it. There was a lot of general interest then, but how many people are still interested and would come to an all-day meeting in Edinburgh in November/December? If there are enough to make it worth the effort of organising it, I shall make a detailed plan and agenda and take serious names.

Central Edinburgh is a magical place around Christmas, so a meeting at a date from the end of November would be good (St Andrews Day is the 30th November, highly suitable, and the decorations and entertainments in Princes St Gardens open just before that) Time for gift shopping could be built in.

Here is a possible scenario - a meeting room overlooking the castle booked for the day from 9 to 5, with three tea/coffee/cake/biscuit breaks, a buffet lunch, and a couple of talks on relevant subjects, plus time for limitless socialising and retail therapy on Princes St. This would cost, at a very vague reckoning, about £25 a head plus £7.50 each for lunch. A bit of negotiation might bring it down, but that is a conjecture, so is a spot of fundraising of some kind to offset the cost. (GN have indicated that they are not able to offer any funding) Other places might be cheaper or dearer, but this is somewhere that we know does a good lunch and afternoon tea and has a nice atmosphere. There is a lift. There would be room for up to 40.

There are usually travel deals on at that time of year. There are a lot of hotels/B&Bs etc in Edinburgh, (lists are available from the information centre), and we might get a bulk rate if several people want to stay over in the the same place.

I don't know yet whether this will be viable, so there is no guarantee that it will happen, but it could be a very enjoyable day. If you are interested enough to be counted in provisionally, please pm me.

Oh! I am so cross that I am leaving Edinburgh on the morning of the 1st! I would have loved to have met everyone. Too late to change my plans sadly. Hope you all have a wonderful day. It would have been our 40th wedding anniversary that day sad

Here is an offer for an Edinburgh city break for two, with three-course meal and wine, in the Carlton Hotel (just round the corner from Waverley station) for £129 one night, £219 two nights, with upgrade to premium room for £20. Must apply for voucher in the next 4 days. (voucher is then valid for bookings made until 31st December 2013, to stay on dates up to 31st March 2014)

We'll think of you, Gally. Maybe we will do it again next year (fingers crossed for this one first!) I wish we could have had the 30th November. The Sunday travelling has stymied a lot of people.

I am SO glad that we have persuaded Galen to brave the dreaded airport assistance and get back on Pegasus to fly up.

Elegran Sun 13-Oct-13 09:10:05

Now for another travel problem. Isorod would have come up from Hexham, but has visual problems, so was hoping a friend would drive her up. No trains until 10 am. Friend is unable to help that day, so she has called off. Is anyone driving up from that area with a spare car seat?

Galen Sun 13-Oct-13 11:38:15

I told you, no bloody horses! Flying or pedestrian !

YaYaJen Sun 13-Oct-13 17:28:03

No change in circumstances, may have to join in via Skype?

Galen Sun 13-Oct-13 17:40:09

Elegran I've sent the money by paypal (I hope) first time I've used this ap so hope it worked!

Elegran Sun 13-Oct-13 18:26:30

It has arrived safely, Galen. Thank you.

Elegran Sun 13-Oct-13 18:28:37

Skype is a good idea, Jen. I believe you can do conference calls on it, is that right? Does the CCs cost money or are they free? There is wifi at the venue, and I think my laptop will be there anyway.

Galen Sun 13-Oct-13 18:47:16

My iPad will be and it's 3G wifi and has skype.
The hotel will have video conferencing facilities if it's any good!

I hope you all have an absolutely fabulous time. What a silly thing to say – of course you will. Every time I put into use the Glaswegian patois tea towel that I bought at the Kelvingrove Museum I am reminded of the Northern Grannies and the extremely noisy fun we have had at various meet-ups.

Elegran Sun 13-Oct-13 19:03:16

Just checked. Skype group conference calls are free, and up to 25 contacts can be in a group.

Gally Sun 13-Oct-13 19:08:12

Great idea. Count me in, but I will be incommunicado until well after lunch time hmm

Marelli Sun 13-Oct-13 19:35:19

absent - we were all a bit noisy, weren't we! grin Especially in Darlington! And Gally, we'll give you a loud wake-up call as soon as we get started!! wink

Elegran Sat 19-Oct-13 11:30:59

Numbers are now up to seventeen. Is there anyone out there who has not yet seen this thread and would like to come?

YaYaJen Sat 19-Oct-13 17:13:02

So pleased will be there in spirit if not in body and will be able to raise a glass to you all via Skype x

Galen Mon 21-Oct-13 20:38:33

Is anybody going to be there early on the sat morning?
My plane arrives at 08 10
The hotel doesn't allow you in til the afternoon!
Suggestions please?

thatbags Mon 21-Oct-13 20:44:06

How are you getting from the airport into town, galen? I'd come and meet you but it'll take me more than three hours to get there and I don't think there's an early enough train!

Galen Mon 21-Oct-13 20:59:57

I was going to use taxis! It's just as I'm not mobile I don't know what to do until the afternoon when I can check in. I'm hoping I can drop my rucksack off at the hotel.
I might ask the taxi driver, ' how much to hire you for a morning to drive me round the local scenes?(not Murray park!)'

Galen Mon 21-Oct-13 21:01:38

I do want to look in jenners.
I want to buy a long kilt style skirt. Any suggestions?

Galen Mon 21-Oct-13 21:03:50

Oh! I used to buy mini haggis from jenners at the airport, but I think they've closed!
If any of you can get me pack of 'cocktail' size haggis I'd love it, as one of those is ideal for me on my own.

Galen Mon 21-Oct-13 21:11:38

Sleep well Galen moon

Elegran Mon 21-Oct-13 22:13:03

It is the Saturday morning, Bags, and you will not be there until Sunday, will you? I have been watching the boxthis evening (all about what happens to the bodies of alcoholics - very cheerful!) so have missed a bit of the conversation.

I am sure something can be arranged, Galen don't worry.

Pittcity Tue 22-Oct-13 19:46:36

I emailed ROSL and they said we could leave bags at reception until our rooms are ready.
