Edinburgh meetup during festival?

While the Newcastle meetup was being organised, one in Edinburgh during the festival was mentioned. Edinburgh is packed to the crowsteps in August, so it may not be easy to book for a large party, but there are plenty of eateries so surely something will be possible. Any opinions on where to eat? ROSL as we have done before? Somewhere else?

Dates of festivals are -:

Edinburgh International Festival 8-31 August
Festival Fringe 1st to 25th August
Edinburgh Art Festival 31 July – 31 August
Edinburgh International Book Festival 9 - 25 August

More about each of the festivals plus links at www.edinburghspotlight.com/2014/01/info-dates-for-2013-festivals/ (I think they are still using the same webpage as last year and haven't changed the name)

.....the walk dash along the length of Princes Street to the station may have helped reduce some of the calories ingested in the delicious chocolate pud which I should have refused hmm

Marelli Wed 20-Aug-14 18:32:16

Ah, but wasn't it delicious, Marmight!! grin

It was great! Really enjoyed being able to talk to everyone again (and boy can we talk grin). Tegan and I trundled along to Waverley Station at a more leisurely pace than you Fifers. I've found a quicker way for me to get across country too: two trains instead of one but not so many stops. Thanks everyone, and to elegran for organising it again.

Elegran Wed 20-Aug-14 21:23:33

Just returned to the laptop and seen that everyone seems to have enjoyed it, I am so pleased. As you say, boy can we talk! Elizabeth1 was later getting there than anyone else but soon made up for lost time!

About time to think about the next. Ariadne!! Calling Ariadne!! When was it you said you would be on your way through the area? With this meetup behind us we can now concentrate on September - and October too so that ffinochio can get organised.

Any dates that anyone wants to suggest or avoid? Any ideas for where to meet and/or what to do?

I can't do 16 Oct as it is a certain person's birthday—not mine, I'd go to a gransnet meetup like a shot on my birthday [partytastic!]

Just on the train back to Newcastle after a great day in Edinburgh.
Lovely to see you all again Elegran, Marelli, Tegan, Bags, Marmight and to meet you Elizabeth1.
We never stopped talking & I couldn't believe how quickly the time passed!
Thank you again Elegran for organising and I hope to join you all again in the winter smile

Sounds like you all had a great time ladies!

Marmight Thu 21-Aug-14 08:48:30

I will be away from 8/12 and from 24/4Nov. Hopefully the chosen day will be one I can do! No pressure Elegran wink

Would anyone like a visit to the theatre in Edinburgh at any time cause that sounds like good fun to me. I miss my 4 monthly trips to London now that I am retired. I went to the theatre with a good few others who came from around the country, we also went for a meal before or after and talked for all the nations. I know it can become expensive however we could save up once a year perhaps. I could offer a bed or two for the night. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on this one.hmm

Elegran Thu 21-Aug-14 10:22:17

Noted Marmight. Any more difficult dates for anyone?

I remember my father spending many evenings before a new term with class timetables for a whole school. No computer, just sheets and sheets of paper and lots of cups of coffee. This could become very similar.

Elizabeth1 The theatre idea sounds great. Add my name.

Dare I mention at this stage that Edinburgh is gorgeous in December and a beautiful excited city. Just love it

Marmight Thu 21-Aug-14 11:07:22

Another December meeting would be good especially when the 'German' Market is in full swing, but hopefully there will be a couple more before then!

Elegran Thu 21-Aug-14 11:15:55

August, September, October, December - before we know it we will be holding monthly meet-ups!

Jane asked yesterday "What are we doing today?" We were just eating and blethering, actually, but is there a case for "doing something" at meet-ups as well?

Last December it was some talks, Elizabeth1 is suggesting a theatre trip (in December?) Would people be up for more "things" to be set up ? Not doing without the eating and blethering, of course, and it would all take more time, but I am sure it could be arranged.

What do you think?

Marmight Thu 21-Aug-14 12:18:34

I enjoy the round-the-table blethering over a good meal but perhaps we could arrange a visit or two in between our usual gluttonous meetings - theatre, gallery, exhibition, zoo or whatever and finish it off with a High Tea!! winecupcakewine

Elizabeth1 Thu 21-Aug-14 12:36:20

Yes! Yes! Yes! wine

Elegran Thu 21-Aug-14 12:39:49

Nice to see you are so enthusiastic Elizabeth1

Who is going to organise the theatre outing? You or me? grin

Elizabeth1 Thu 21-Aug-14 13:54:04

We could arrange this together if you like.smile

Elegran Thu 21-Aug-14 14:06:55

Very diplomatic answer Elizabeth1 ! In my experience, jointly arranging something usually ends up in some essential detail falling into the gap between, or the arrangers falling out. shock

Elizabeth1 Thu 21-Aug-14 14:09:35

One of us could perhaps select theatre choices and one of us could arrange the meal part. What do you think?

Elegran Thu 21-Aug-14 14:13:16

I am sure we could do something like that. You are probably more theatre-conscious than me (not at all) so you can have that half.

Elizabeth1 Thu 21-Aug-14 14:27:15

Sounds good to me Elegran I'll get on the case. Is there anything anyone out there has a great yen to see?

Elegran Thu 21-Aug-14 14:50:26

I'll leave the theatre to you then and concentrate on the FOOD then. Any strong opinions anywhere on supper or afternoon tea, luxury or quick/n near theatre? I suppose it depends on what we see, so probably best to settle that first.

Elizabeth1 Thu 21-Aug-14 15:47:22

I would suggest to those avid theatre goers to google any of the above because they all look fabulous.

My favourite would be Wicked smile however I'm open to other likes.

Gosh this isn't easy is it Elegran

janeainsworth Thu 21-Aug-14 17:44:07

Elegran! I can't really remember, but I think when I said what are we doing, it was in the context of were we staying in the Observation Bar or going through to the restaurant!
I wouldn't like anyone to think that I was less than very happy with the meal + jolly good natter format!
Having said that, the theatre idea sounds great and I'll certainly come if I can smile
