It has been brought to my attention (Katek nudged me) that if we want to meet up for a Christmas December lunch, we need to start booking somewhere soon - before all the works outings fill up the restaurants.

If anyone is interested, could you do as we have done before - let me know the days when you CAN'T come, and I will juggle dates around to try to find one that suits everyone - or suits as many as possible - and get an estimate of numbers. The numbers will fluctuate wildly between now and then, of course.

I think the ROSL would be a good venue - do you agree? Central, easy to get to, and they usually do us well.

Not,,*Jane*?
Years ago when I worked as a volunteer chairman of Welcare in S London (working for single mums and their children) the one thing which put me in the Christmas spirit was not Jingle Bells belting out in the shopping centres, or writing Christmas cards or even choosing presents for my own kids, it was organising money donations from churches and groups in the Diocese which we turned into practical things and went out with the other volunteers to deliver a box of groceries and basic toiletries,(plus one tiny "luxury") enough to see them over the holiday period plus a gift for the mum and a gift fir the baby/toddler . We would go up high rise blocks with urine stinking stairwells. I always insisted the volunteers went in pairs as the areas were none too savoury! And then I thought that these girls, often teenagers had to do that on their own with a baby in tow. Many of them were in tears that somebody had thought of their baby, no benefit cheats there, just teenage mums with secondhand furniture, a bleak cold high rise flat and often a judgemental family who had disowned them.
I'm not pretending it was a huge deal, but it made me feel, the spirit of Christmas a lot more than all the Ho Ho Hos..

Jane10 Sun 14-Aug-16 19:45:38

Ho Ho Ho. Not!

janeainsworth Sun 14-Aug-16 19:32:08

That sound a really good idea Daphne.

DaphneBroon Sun 14-Aug-16 18:51:18

Absolutely none of my business as I can't be there sad but how about something we have tried in a group I belong to. We each put a nominal sum of money similar to what you would spend on a Secret Santa type gift into a "pot" (say £5) but ALSO a sealed envelope with the name of a charity in it. Then, rather like a raffle ONE envelope is drawn out and the whole pot given to that charity.
Bit of Christmas feel good spirit, we found.

Jane10 Sun 14-Aug-16 14:23:03

Suit yourself

janeainsworth Sun 14-Aug-16 14:14:47

Sorry I don't do Secret Santas blush
Can I just come to the lunch?

Marelli Sun 14-Aug-16 12:24:07

That's a good idea! smile

Jane10 Sun 14-Aug-16 12:22:22

Am not feeling much better. A disturbed sleepover with DGSs didn't help. The lovely pun came to me as I was lying awake trying to decide whether or not the youngest needed his inhaler. Naturally he's full of beans this am and I'm just not!

Katek Sun 14-Aug-16 12:05:49

Not sure if you're feeling better or worse Jane10 with a pun like that!!

I'm sure I will already have something nice in my box of stashed gifts for raffles etc.

Elegran Sun 14-Aug-16 11:49:43

Sounds good to me!
The ROSL does crackers and hats with C* lunch.

Jane10 Sun 14-Aug-16 11:45:09

Katek and I wondered if, rather than party bags like last time, everyone could bring along a small wrapped present (value between £3-5 only). Then we could all put them on a table and choose one to take away. Sort of a secret 'Granta' - sorry for pun! What do people think?

janeainsworth Sat 13-Aug-16 23:04:25

Haha! I thought it must have been me jane10
Looking forward to seeing you again Ellengrin

Tegan Sat 13-Aug-16 20:55:17

Just had a horrid thought that I may be having treatment on my hand and foot roundabout that time; that's the only thing that will stop me coming.

GeminiJen Thu 11-Aug-16 18:46:01

Great! Mon Dec 5 is good for me. And the menu looks delish

Jane10 Thu 11-Aug-16 08:30:03

Phew! I was wondering what it was that I'd said!

EllenT Thu 11-Aug-16 08:18:02

Oops! The "again" bit was meant to mean that I'd met most but not all folk on the list! Of course particularly looking forward to seeing all the lovely Gransnetters from the last Edinburgh meet blush

hildajenniJ Wed 10-Aug-16 23:07:37

It all sounds lovely. 5th is probably okay for me. I really will try my best to be there! Although, knowing my luck, I wouldn't rule anything out.

Marelli Wed 10-Aug-16 21:23:00

5th Dec fine for me, too. My pal Bellasgran will also be joining us. smile

Jane10 Wed 10-Aug-16 17:44:22

Oh EllenT are there some people you're not wanting to see!!sad

tubbygran Wed 10-Aug-16 17:33:05

That sounds mouth-wateringly good. The date is in the diary! As EllenT says, it will be good to see everyone again.

EllenT Wed 10-Aug-16 12:21:58

Excellent, look forward to meeting everyone (again, in most cases). And to a splendid lunch!

Elegran Wed 10-Aug-16 12:00:14

So that is 14 of us if the date suits everyone - it ought to, as I avoided any days that someone couldn't come.

I've provisionally booked for 16 - 18 and will confirm in a few days if it seems OK. There are bound to be some to add on or take off. The numbers can be changed later anyway, up to three days before the 5th.
