Dovecot Tapestry studio visit - now trying to organise for September

We failed to get a date for this in May/June, but there is still interest so I am starting again.

For those who missed the first thread, The Dovecot Studios weave beautiful tapestries, and are also a design and craft centre, with exhibitions. Their tapestry designs are from various sources - the one I remember from long ago was from a painting of tulips by Elizabeth Blackader, but they do modern and traditional designs. They used to work overlooking the old Dovecot in Corstorphine, but moved to the previous Infirmary Baths, where their workspace is above what used to be the swimming pool. Above it is still a balcony all round, from which you can look down and watch them, with posters on the walls. This is free!!

Their website is dovecotstudios.com/

Also, they do group visits, with a weaver explaining what is happening and answering questions - this is NOT free, the "Dovecot from Above" tour is £200 for up to 20 people. (there are other tours too) For this to be viable, we would need 20 people each happy to pay £10 (or almost 20 people paying a bit more than £10 each) If it were fewer people, the cost would go up proportionately. It would be booked in advance, and a date agreed with them.

Who would like to do this? How many would be prepared to pay £10, how many would rather do the free DIY visit? How much more would you be happy to pay if numbers were a lot less than 20?

Oh crikey - how have I missed it!
Could you add Ina and I on, please, Elegran?

Elegran Sat 24-Aug-19 13:59:22

You and Ina added. See you there.

Marelli Sat 24-Aug-19 14:36:58

Thanks, Elegran . I'm going to check to see if the restaurant do gluten-free options for Ina.

Marelli Sat 24-Aug-19 14:43:00

Just checked the Q&A's on their reviews, and see that a year ago they did give a gluten-free option, so they will no doubt still do that.

Sorry , I’m going to be away for most of September and October.

cascats Sun 22-Sept-19 14:44:32

Hi, regretfully I am not going to make it tomorrow. Annoyed with self as have been looking forward to it for months and even chosen my lunch already! However am full of cold with chestey cough so am going to try and get to doctors instead.
Really hope you all have a lovely time, x

Elegran Sun 22-Sept-19 15:09:22

Shall we breath curry fumes down the phone to you, Cascats? That would clear your tubes. Sorry to hear you are no' weel - see you next time.

Our places are booked for lunch, by the way - 12.30 at Mother India in Infirmary Street. The Dovecot balcony is open from 12 to 3, so it is either go in for a look before eating, or go after. Or both, of course!

I went in last week for a recce, and it was very interesting. A distinct shortage of info on the balcony walls explaining everything that was going on, but all fairly comprehensible. I was fascinated by someone who was using a kind of mechanical punch needle on a long electric cable - very high-tech compared to the hand weavers at their traditional frames.

Elegran Sun 22-Sept-19 15:14:00

So the line-up is -
Elegran
Baggs
Almonds
Baubles
Grammaretto
Marelli
Ina

Is that right?

Marelli Sun 22-Sept-19 15:50:42

Looking forward to it. Ina and I will see you at the restaurant around 12.30.
Sorry to hear you're not too well, Cascats. Take care. xx

Grammaretto Sun 22-Sept-19 16:33:55

I am looking forward to it too. Sorry Cascats you'll be missed. Get well soon xx

Baggs Sun 22-Sept-19 16:35:34

<Waves> from Argyll. See you all tomorrow!

Beenn reading the clothes cost thread so I might wear one of my thirty year old jumpers which were expensive when I bought them but have earned the outlay, so to speak wink

Grammaretto Sun 22-Sept-19 16:47:37

Baggs It's second-hand-September so I am afraid that won't do! I haven't seen the clothes cost thread

Baggs Sun 22-Sept-19 17:20:06

Oo-er. I’m wearing second hand today: daughter's jeans & charity shop Austrian-style felted jacket. P'raps they'd better be carried over...
But it’s going to be warm & sunny in Edinburgh tomorrow, isn’t it?

NotSpaghetti Sun 22-Sept-19 17:22:16

Wish I could join you... would love to visit Dovecot Studios.

almonds Mon 23-Sept-19 09:19:25

My apologies as I will not be able to make lunch. My MIL is going for urgent cardiology tests and my partner is taking her to lessen her stress. We are so impressed with the NHS. We have recently rescued a dog whose owner had died and she's not ready yet to be left alone for any length of time as she becomes distressed. If he's back in time I will come and join you. I will approach any small groups of ladies and ask if you are the Gransnet meet up. I can't begin to say how disappointed I am at this turn of events as Ive been looking forward to the visit.

baubles Mon 23-Sept-19 10:16:36

Sorry you won’t manage Cascats, hope you feel better soon and almonds I hope everything goes well today.

I’ve been in Edinburgh since 7.00 am, looking after DGD this morning. Her mum is at work but should be finished just after 12, if I’ve a small child in tow it’ll only be for 10 minutes.

See you all soon.

Grammaretto Mon 23-Sept-19 11:30:32

On my bus. See yous all soon xx

Nortsat46 Mon 23-Sept-19 11:41:22
