Aches and pains at 65 - will HRT help?

...and if so, how do I get a GP to prescribe it ?

I’m due to retire this year and have looked forward to an active retirement and long walks - but this last couple of years, I’ve been getting more aches and pains in my joints, ankle and back and I am fearing that this will get worse.

I sailed through menopause and HRT was only something you’d have for severe symptoms. Will it help my aches and pains? Anyone’s stories? Thank you!

I was put on HRT patches for pain and sweats. The only thing they helped was day flushes, the night sweats and pain was still there. Finally over 4 years later I have been diagnosed with an autoimmune disease which has the symptoms of the menopause. Maybe chat to your GP and get bloods, etc done and make sure it is the menopause before you go down the HRT route.

If you suffer from acid reflux, beware. HRT relaxes the stomach sphincter amongst it’s other effects. I found out about this the hard way and now have a hiatus hernia.

I loved being on HRT. I felt well and happy. Since coming off it In not so goid. As for the aches and pains in my case it was connective tissue can be from Lupus and us two arthritis nothing was ever going to hold that back sadly. Supplements don't do anything for me just prescription drugs , eat healthily and moderate exercise. I hope you find a regime that suits you.

Thank you so much for all this, it’s exactly what I need to hear. I keep reading about cases of HRT being this wonder drug with no more joint pains so of course this is what I’ve been looking at. It’s why I wanted to hear of real-life cases.

Turmeric supplements have been recommended, where do you get yours? Is there actually any treatment for arthritis or is it dismissed as “wear and tear” and something you put up with?

I use oestrogen gel HRT, and have been prescribed HRT for years. I have extensive osteoarthritis which is gradually deteriorating in terms of stiffness and pain. I don’t find HRT makes a great deal of difference, but may have slowed progression in the early days. There is a definite genetic predisposition in my family, and it is not necessarily just “wear and tear”.

Proactively I find it helpful to remain active, occasional analgesics and keeping my weight down.
